Provision of Data
How is syndromic data best reported to users?
Sara Robertson
APHA Surveillance Intelligence Unit
Topics
• The Question – How to visualise data – How to disseminate those visualisations – How to fill gaps in APHA data (touch on…)
• Highlights of the Current Process
– Submission forms – Analysis and reporting
• Vision of Some New Processes – Website – Dashboards – Discussion Forum – New Data…?....
Submission Receipt (Signs)
Investigation / Testing
Diagnosis (Syndrome)
This is our submission form. Syndromic data from signs is available
immediately, syndromic data from diagnosis may
take weeks or months
Quarterly Trend Analysis This is the sort of number crunching we do every quarter for the species
leads. It’s very retrospective. Something more current would be
good
Here’s the quarterly report – providing a
review of the quarter for each main species group
Future Vision?
This is the APHA page on the Gov.UK website., with access to the Vet Gateway
highlighted. Neither are currently very interesting
from a surveillance viewpoint
This is a mock up of a whole new Vet Gateway section - dedicated to the Diagnostic /Surveillance
Service
The pig page might look like this…
Top Diagnoses
Self Service Pig Industry Dashboards
Profiles by Syndrome
Regional Variations
etc etc etc
Trends in Clinical Signs

Here’s a potential interface showing analyses available for practitioners, using our
VIDA data initially, and wider industry data later?
This shows all diagnoses for all species
Note that some counties are
missing – this will soon be fixed
The user can select from picklists to see a tailored list of most common diagnoses
Selected PIGS
Now it’s ADULT PIGS
We’ve selected SYSTEMIC & MISC, and Quarter 1

Trends in Clinical Signs
profile of clinical signs for APHA submissions
For ADULTS there’s less diarrhoea, more reproductive disease (no surprise..)
For post-weaned the issues are diarrhoea, respiratory and found dead….
For pre-weaned it’s Diarrhoea and Found Dead

Correlation of Syndrome
&Sign
This counts submissions by Sign and Syndrome It’s interesting to see how submissions with particular clinical signs (Y axis) end
up in different syndromes on diagnoses (X axis)
We envisage you’d be able to see what types of submission and diagnoses make up the
figures in each cell

Clinical Presentation of: PCVD (Porcine Circovirus) Shows how some diseases can change in presentation over time – PCDV started as
a disease of wasting, but less so now.

• Depends on availability of data

This is a potential vision for how data in the APHA databases could be
combined with industry data to create a more complete picture for
surveillance, available in the cloud
We envisage an open discussion forum where
industry and government can discuss what they see in the dashboards, or out on farms
An example of a discussion forum hosted on SharePoint in the cloud – one of many
potential options.
