President’s ArticleAs you will see, this edition of ourmagazine focuses solely onlooking back at another wonderfulAPCOM conference, in thefabulous setting of the RedworthHall hotel, in County Durham.
Although we are a little later going topress than we had intended, the fun, lessons learnt, colleagues re-acquainted, knowledge gained andoverall restored confidence, are allstill very fresh in the memory. Forthose of you who attended, I hope thisedition is a reminder for you to bookup early for next year….and for thosewho were unable to make it toDurham, have a look at what youmissed and hopefully you can join usnext year.
I have been fortunate enough toattend every conference sinceEdinburgh in 2005 and in that time Ihave seen the event go from strengthto strength. Perhaps we have hadlarger events in the past, but in termsof content, delivery, timing andrelevance, Durham 2013 surpassedour expectations and will take somebeating. However, don’t just take myword, on pages 6 and 21 have a readof some of the many great commentswe received from delegates andsponsors. Given the difficult times ourindustry has endured recently, thesuccess of this year’s conference istestament to everything that is goodabout APCOM.
Probably one of the most pleasingaspects of this year’s conference wasthe training sessions. This alwaysprovides the Executive team with adifficult challenge – choosing a topicwhich is relevant and worthy enoughto encourage members to attend. This year’s theme was “Proving YourWorth” and I think we got it spot on.We had three superb sessions, hosted by two of our Platinumsponsors (Mark Hinder from KonicaMinolta and Chas Blanchard fromCanon UK) and one of our members,Peter Fardy of Kirklees MBC.Between them they gave us acoherent, informative and thoughtprovoking perspective as to how wecan, and need to, return to respectiveorganisations and demonstrate howwe can prove our worth.
As always, the highlight of ourconference is the coveted awardsevening. This really is an evening ofcelebration, when we get the chanceto don the evening gear, enjoy awonderful setting and celebrate thework of our members. Not forgetting ofcourse our resident host, Mark Barlow.Mark promised us the fun factor anddidn’t let us down, even though someof his walk on music sound bites werequestionable. (If I hear the theme-tuneto Dallas once more!!!!!)
I would like to congratulate all ouraward winners, a full list of ourwinners along with details of theirwinning entries are coveredthroughout the magazine. I wouldparticularly like to commend SimonWard from Wigan Council, who pickedup the APCOM employee of the yearaward, just edging out Jayne Harris
from City and County of Swansea.Simon is now part of a very exclusiveclub! I think it’s only right that I alsogive a special mention to BlackpoolCouncil, who again walked away withthe in-plant of the year award. Nomean feat given the standard andquality of award entries, which getbetter and better every year.Blackpool has set the benchmark forus all. I for one will be trying evenharder next year!
Our conference would not be possiblewithout the support and generosity ofour sponsors. In addition tosponsorship, our sponsors donatedsome fantastic prizes, for both thesponsors showcase prize draw andthe awards evening charity raffle.During my speech at the awardsevening I made reference to thestrong relationships we have with oursponsors, many of whom havesupported us for many years. I amhopeful that many of our sponsors willbe with us again in 2014.
Last, but not least, I would like tothank the Executive team and inparticular, Mark Barlow for the hugeamount of work that was put in tomaking the conference happen. Beingmy first conference as President I gotthe chance to see every aspect ofwhat is needed and often lost sight ofthe fact the Executive work on avoluntary basis, often includingweekends and annual leave.
So another year is coming to a closeand 2014 is now on the horizon. Weknow that the year will again bringchallenges that will test us all. We allknow that pressures are increasing, ifonly for us to simply stand still. I havesaid many times that we stand a farbetter chance of survival by workingtogether through the sharing ofknowledge and experience. This iswhere APCOM really does come in itsown, something which is virtuallyunique within our sector. We haveagain left the membership fee at £100,with up to three free secondarymembers. I am sure you will agreethat this is fantastic value.Membership renewal invoices will besent to you over the next few weeks.2014 is a very special year forAPCOM as it is our 35th anniversary, look out for some special ways we arelooking to celebrate our Rubyanniversary.
Finally, with Christmas now only amatter of weeks away (yes it’s thatnear!) it only leaves me to wish all ourmembers and sponsors, a very merryChristmas and, I sincerely hope, avery prosperous new year.
Graham LoweAPCOM PresidentStaffordshire County Council

evening A great way to round off a greatsummer! apcom Hawaiian BBQ
The Wine Tasting Casino Table lived up to expectations.Guests could come to the table and choose a numbered winebottle by picking a card, taste the wine from the selectedbottle of wines from around the world and, after sampling theselected wine, place their bet on the country they believe thewine to be from. The more difficult the wine is to recognise, the better the odds paid. Fun money of course! We can reliably say that the house won. Though not beforethe guests had managed to taste most of the samples! No fun casino is complete without roulette, and at the endof the evening, a few guests even managed a winningstreak!Congratulations to Jane Edwards from Sheffield CityCouncil who won a £10 M&S Voucher for winning the most, with runners-up Nigel Meigh from West Mercia PoliceAuthority and Sandra Phillips from Bolton Council who wona £5 M&S voucher each.

After a long journey to Durham, the APCOMmembers were treated to the true authenticflavours, aromas and textures of the RedworthHall BBQ. Set in the beautiful Baronial Lounge. They didn’t disappoint!A chance to catch up with old and new friends anddiscuss the latest news and technological innovationfrom the in-plant printing world. The Baronial lounge is a strange place to hold aHawaiian BBQ, and our congratulations go to Sharnifor pulling this one off, but also many thanks toeveryone for getting into the true spirit of the Hawaiiantheme, most of us with the type of shirt we thought wewould never ‘ever’ wear! And of course a nice early night to follow!

Each president can choose to present the APCOM President’sAward. This is presented to someone who in the eyes of thePresident has put a great deal into the association.
The recipient of the award this year was Mike Bennett. After 23 years as an active APCOM member Mike wasthe outstanding candidate of choice for this year’sPresident’s Award. In fact he joined APCOM in 1990 -when we were known as AIMS (Association of ImplantManagers) taking up the role of Publicity Officer.Mike is now the envy of many of us as last year, after38 years of service to the industry he took a well-earned retirement to quite literally live a life on theocean waves! Mike can now be found canoeing, scuba diving and sailing in the Weymouth area.By the very definition of the word, this man is a truegentleman . . . when we asked Mike the question . . .
How would you like to remembered? He replied“A good honest bloke, who did thebest he could”
