Dear Members and Friends;

Twenty years ago, world leaders from over 175 countries

convened the first United Nations Earth Summit in

Rio de Janeiro, and adopted global strategies to “save

the environment.” Ten years ago, they reconvened

with a different focus – to create sustainable and healthy

communities which have the resources to save the

environment. This June, world leaders will come to-

gether once again in Rio, with a new emphasis on

building sustainable “green” economies that save both

the environment and humanity.

How do these global trends and concepts relate to you

and me and the Center for Coastal Studies?

Just as world leaders have evolved in their thinking and

priorities, so have we at the Center. Our staff includes

some of the world’s most respected marine mammalo-

gists, who have devoted decades to understanding

and protecting endangered whales including the hump-

back and North Atlantic right whale. Our focus on

saving individual species of whales has also broadened

to understanding the larger ocean and coastal ecosys-

tems which sustain them. For us, the “green economy”

means organizing an innovative aquaculture project in

Truro and Provincetown that will create local jobs

and food and serve as a model for others; and working

to create the Nation’s first comprehensive Ocean

Management Plan. It means making our years of unique

whale databases available to managers and climate

scientists, to help them understand the extent and im-

pact of climate change on our local ocean and coastal

ecosystems and communities, and then plan accordingly

for the future. For as many accomplishments and

contributions that the Center for Coastal Studies has

made on behalf of the global ocean, the challenges

ahead are even more serious. Yet I know my colleagues

here are unwaveringly committed and convinced

that we can make a difference in both our own ocean

neighborhood and with larger global solutions. I

hope that you share our convictions and will join us

often in the coming year and lend your support

whenever possible.

Thank you.

Reliable data are the foundation for protecting people and wildlife.

Climate change is a global issue, but it must and willbe solved locally and regionally. A 2011 report on the concerns of government officials in the Northeastrevealed an urgent need for local scientific data which can be used to identify and protect vulnerableresources and plan for the future.

Pictured above, a stretch of beach along Cape CodBay shows the effects of storms and erosion. Using new technology, the Center’s marine geologistsare measuring beaches, offshore sites, and the seafloor, and comparing their data to historical surveys

dating back as far as the 1880s. Their findings on erosion rates, along a 30-mile stretch of beach, andthe movement patterns of sand, will aid in planningfor flood prevention and erosion management.

The Center’s scientists are also examining 15 years of data on oceanographic conditions and whale populations. These data can help project the impacts

of future climatechange on whales and the ecosystem they depend on.

Protecting water quality

Clean water is the foundation for healthy communities and a healthy environment.

Cape Cod’s beaches and coastal waters generate atleast $1 billion a year in economic activity. Tourism, recreational boating, recreational and commercialfishing and aquaculture drive the Cape’s economy.Pollution from septic systems, road runoff and resi-dential and commercial fertilizer use threaten coastalwaters. This pollution carries a large cost– the Cape is now facing a $4 - $8 billion price tag for wastewatermanagement actions. The Center’s long-term moni-toring of Cape Cod Bay makes us a key partner inprotecting coastal waters and assessing the success ofactions to reduce pollution. Pictured below, one ofthe Center’s citizen scientists at work. Each year we

regularly test water at 50 locations on Cape Cod Bay,providing essential criteria to guide initiatives to im-prove and protect coastal waterquality. We are now expandingthe program to include Nan-tucket Sound, where almost nobaseline data exists, and to testfor the presence of pharmaceuti-cal compounds – a growingthreat.

Teaching the next generation about the importanceof clean water is critical to inspiring future stewardsof the Cape’s fragile environment. Our classroomand field program for 5th and 6th graders now involves 450 local students in seven public schools.

A healthy environment is the foundation for thrivingcommunities and a robust economy.

The Center’s commitment to preserving natural resources allies us with partners from governments, industries, research groups, fishermen, communitygroups, and many others. Deteriorating environ-ments of any nature – air, water or land – are a detriment to community growth and stability. Work-ing together helps us bridge differences and create solutions that will protect the environment, improveindustry practices and plan responsibly for the future. Above, commercial fisherman and Center research partner Ernie Eldredge hauling a fish weir inNantucket Sound. The Center has teamed with the

Towns of Truro and Provincetown and local shellfishgrowers to map and identify the best site for a newsustainable community aquaculture area in CapeCod Bay. The project is creating up to 50 sites, poten-tially providing jobs for 50 local growers to raise oysters, surf clams and other species. Our scientistsalso work with the fishing industry and governmentagencies to reduce whale entanglement in fishing

gear and marine debris. Our goal is to find solutions thatprotect wildlife andsustain communities.
