CONTRACT NO. 75

1. INTRODUCTION

Establ ishment of observa t ion wells a t Coombs and Hornby Is land was

recommended by Zubel (1982) and \lei (1983). Coombs and Hornby Is land l i e along t h e east coast of Vancouver I s l a n d between Courtenay and Nanaimo ( F i g u r e 1). Both a r e a s depend on groundwater as the m a i n source of water supply and have a high concen t r a t ion of wells. Many wells are open holes d r i l l e d i n t o bedrock intercepting water-bearing zones. Water quan t i ty and q u a l i t y a r e repor ted problems. Observation wells i n these a r e a s would al low c o l l e c t i o n of groundwater da t a f o r a s ses s ing a q u i f e r behaviour to loca l pumping, na tura l recharge and p o l l u t i o n over a period of time. A f i e l d survey by D. Kalyn, groundwater t echn ic i an , i n the winter of 1983 t o l o c a t e sui t a b l e abandoned we1 1 s f o r use a s observa t ion we1 1s was unsuccessful. Consequently, d r i l l i ng was required t o e s t a b l i s h these observa t ion we1 1 s.

2. WELL DRILLING

Well d r i l l i n g was c a r r i e d o u t by Island Well D r i l l i n g Ltd. of Ladysmith. In t o t a l , Wo observa t ion wells (152 mm 0) were established, one each a t Coombs and Hornby Is land (Appendix A ) .

The wells were dr i l led by the air r o t a r y method w i t h a Shram R o t a d r i l l r i g . Cont rac t c o s t t o t a l l e d $7,996.17 (Appendix B).

2.1 Observation Well No. 287

. Work began on March 5, 1984, a t Coombs along the Burgoyne Road r i g h t - of-way (F igures 2 and 3). An i n i t i a l hole, Testhole #1, was d r i l l e d i n

the wrong l o c a t i o n due to mis loca t ing a survey pin, t o a depth o f 8.8 m (29 f e e t ) and was subsequently b a c k f i l l e d and abandoned.

The r i g was moved 12.1 m (39.7 f e e t ) west o f Testhole #1 and a second

ho le was d r i l l e d f o r completion as an observat ion well (P i c tu re 1). Surface casing 254 mm (10 inches) i n diameter was f i r s t i n s t a l l e d to 8.8 m (29 fee t ) . Bedrock was encountered a t 8.2 m (27 fee t ) . A 152 mm (6-inch)

diameter overlap casing was placed ins ide the surface casing and d r i l l i n g

was then continued w i t h a 152 mm (6-inch) open hole to a depth o f 92.4 m (303 f e e t ) . Geologic samples co l l ec ted a t regu la r i n t e r v a l s showed

d r i 11 i ng encountered the fo l low ing :

Water was f i r s t d e t e c t e d ' a t about 24 m (80 f e e t ) f low ing i n t o the we l l a t a r a t e o f roughly 3(10-2) L/s (1/2 gpm). No other water-bearing zones were detected below t h i s depth. The s t a t i c water l e v e l upon

completion was 2.74 m (9.0 feet ) below the t o p of the 152 mm casing. A f t e r d r i l l i n g , the we l l was developed by f l ush ing w i t h a i r . A surface

seal was then constructed by f i l l i n g the annular space between the 254 mm and 152 mm casings w i t h cement and cut t ings, and p u l l i n g out the 254 mm

2.2 Observation Well No. 288

Work on Hornby Is land began March 7, 1984, along the Central Road

r ight-of-way w i t h Testhole #1 a t S i t e #1 (Figure 5 and P i c t u r e 8 ) . This

152 mm diameter hole was d r i l l e d to 67.1 m (220 f e e t ) and encountered the fo l l ow ing geologic mater ia ls :

The hole was dry and subsequently b a c k f i l l e d and abandoned (Pic tures 9 and 10).

Another ho le (Observation Well No. 288) was d r i l l e d a t S i t e #2 275 m (900 f e e t ) south of Testhole #1 (Figures 5 and 6 and P i c t u r e 11). A 254 mm surface casing was i n s t a l l e d t o 6.1 m (20 f e e t ) . A 152 mm over lap

casing was then placed i n s i d e the surface hole and d r i l l i n g continued with a 152 mm open hole to 77.1 m (253 fee t ) . Geologic samples co l l ec ted

showed d r i 11 i ng encountered the f o l l owi ng:

Some water was f i r s t detected between 4.6 m (15 f e e t ) and 5.2 rn f e e t ) . No major water-bearing zones were encountered below that,

however, small quan t i t i es o f water were being cont r ibu ted to the wel l a t

depth. Upon completion the t o t a l y i e l d was estimated a t 6(10-3) L/s (5 gph) and the s t a t i c water l e v e l was 15.03 m (49.3 f e e t ) below the top o f the 152 mm casing. The we l l was developed by f l ush ing w i t h a i r . A surface seal was constructed by f i l l i n g the annular space between the

254 mm and 152 mm casings w i t h cement and cut t ings, and p u l l i n g out the

254 mm casing. A wel l l i d was attached to the wel l head to complete the

w e l l (F igure 7 and P ic tu res 12, 13, 14 and 15). A pump t e s t was not performed because o f the low y i e l d . A summary o f the wel l d r i l l i n g i s

presented i n Table 1.

3. WATER CHEMISTRY

Water chemistry was tested i n the f i e l d w i t h a conduc t i v i t y meter and

Hach K i t from a i r f lushed samples. Fol lowing d r i l l i n g bu t before recorder

i n s t a l l a t i o n , a sample was co l l ec ted from each we l l w i t h a tube sampler, and

sent to the Environmental Laboratory i n Vancouver f o r chemical analysis.

Chemistry resu1,ts are shown i n F igure 8, Table 2 and Appendix C.

Water q u a l i t y from both observation we l ls i s very s o f t and r e l a t i v e l y

h igh i n pH, d isso lved minera l i za t ion , f luor ide , boron and aluminum. PH, TDS and f luor ide exceed those l i m i t s se t i n B.C. Dr ink ing Q u a l i t y Standards,

1982. I n addi t ion, water from Observation Well No. 287 appears to conta in

excessively high amounts of i r o n (Fe diss. = 0.57 mg/L). The waters can be character ized as Na-HC03 type water w i th corroding tendency (moderately h igh

Ryznar Index) and no t idea l fo r i r r i g a t i o n (h igh SAR index).

4. DISCUSSION

The Coombs Observation Well No. 287 appears t o be completed i n t o shales o f the Haslam Formation. The Hornby Is land Observation Well No. 288 appears t o be completed i n t o conglomerates, sandstones and shales o f the Geoffrey

Formation. Both formations belong to the Nanaimo Group, a sequence o f sedi-

mentary rocks formed dur ing the Mesozoic Era. Most we l ls i n both areas are completed i n t o bedrock. However, overburden i n both areas, comprising most- l y till up to several metres th ick , ove r l i es bedrock and some we l ls i n

Coombs are dug i n t o t h i s overburden to tap shal low groundwater. No high

capaci ty we l ls are known to e x i s t i n e i t h e r area - the bedrock aqui fers

appear to have very l i m i t e d y ie ld . Although Observation Well No. 288 penetrated several bedding plane f ractures, none proved productive. The

water chemistry suggests some s a l t y and/or brackish water may be seeping

i n t o the lower p o r t i o n o f both observat ion wel ls .

Water q u a l i t y from both observat ion wel'ls i s s i m i l a r even though the

we1 1 s are compl eted i n t o d i f f e r e n t fl ow systems. Hydro1 ogica l ly , Hornby

I s l a n d can be regarded as a freshwater mound atop a seawater basement w i t h

the mound con t inua l l y being recharged by p r e c i p i t a t i o n and discharging t o the sea, and i s separate from the f low systems o f Vancouver Is land. The

r e l a t i v e l y high concentrat ions o f boron and f l o u r i d e may r e f l e c t the presence of some brackish groundwater seeping i n t o the wells. The aluminum

content may be n a t u r a l l y occurr ing o r may be from contamination during

sampl i n g - t h i s i s not c lear .

A more complete assessment o f the hydrogeology can be made through

continued monitor ing o f the bedrock aqui fers i n both these areas.

5. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Two 152 mm diameter observation wel ls were established: one each a t

Coombs and Hornby Island. Observation Well No. 287 a t Coombs was completed to 92 m i n s o f t black shales. Observation Well No. 288 a t

Hornby I s land was completed to 77 m i n i n te r l aye red conglomerates,

sandstonesand shales. Both wel ls have very low capaci t ies. The wel ls

are adequate however t o monitor water l e v e l response.

Cost f o r the d r i l l i n g con t rac t t o t a l l e d $7,996.17.

Water q u a l i t y from both wel ls i s s im i l a r : very s o f t and r e l a t i v e l y

h igh i n pH, dissolved minera l izat ion, f luor ide, boron and aluminum.

The waters can be character ized as Na-HC03 type water.

Water samples should be co l l ec ted a t l e a s t twice a year.

Water l e v e l should be monitored w i t h an automatic recorder f o r a minimum o f 10 years (P ic tures 16 and 17 and Appendix 0) .

On Monday, March 12 , 1984 an automatic water level recorder was ins ta l led on the recently dr i l led observation well i n Coornbs. This well along with another observation well on Hornby Island was dr i l led under Governnent Contract No. 75 - "Dril l ing, Construction and Testing of Groundwater Observation Wells a t Coombs a n d Hornby Island, B.C."

The purpose of establishing th i s observat ion well was t o monitor long- term water level f luctuations i n the aquifer. Most dr i l led wells i n t h i s area report low well yields and poor water quality (mainly hydrogen sulphide problems). Coombs area residents rely solely on groundwater for the i r water requirements.

T h e well i s located w i t h i n the Burgoyne Road right-of-way adjacent to Lot 1 4 , Block 5 , Plan 1939 (Figures 1 and 2 ) . Attached to this memorandum i s a copy of "Permission t o Construct Works Within Crown Lands" which has been approved by the Ministry of Transportation and Hi ghways.

On Tuesday, March 13, 1984 an automatic water level recorder was instal led on the recently dr i l led observation well on Hornby Island. The purpose of establishing t h i s observation well i s to mnitor lona- term water level f luctuations i n the aquifer. Many of the nearby dr i l led wells i n this area (T- y ) report poor water qual i ty and low well yields. Some well owners have also reported s a l t water i n t he i r wells. Well density i s very h i g h i n t h i s area and residents are very concerned a b o u t the q u a l i t y and quantity o f groundwater, as i t i s the i r sole source of water.
