What is the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation (WECAF) all about? That is a question I get asked occasionally. The technical response is that we are a separate Board of Directors with a separate charitable number than the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society. Our mandate, however, as committed volunteers is to uphold the programs that impact children, youth and families that the Children’s Aid Society supports. We do this by generating community support through fundraising and public awareness initiatives. The shorter answer, yet more to the point, is that WECAF exists to make a difference in the lives of others right here in Windsor-Essex County.

As I reflect back on the fourth year of the five year “You Can Write A Child Story” Campaign, I marvel at how our community responds to the needs of our neighbours. This is evident in both our Holiday Program and “Fresh Air” Summer Camp appeals. When both drives were falling short, we shared our story with others through traditional and social media. In each case, the response was overwhelming in terms of people wanting to help others. As a result, over 800 families enjoyed the holidays and more than 300 children were able to partake in a summer experience.

The Board of Directors continues to explore new and innovative ways to provide resources to not only children in care, but families where children remain in the home. The programs of the Foundation are instrumental in strengthening relationships, building self-esteem and assuring that every child has an opportunity to aspire to his or her dreams. In order to educate the community about our work, we have invested in a renewal of our web-site, www.wecaf.on.ca. This is now an inviting, user-friendly means of communication. As well, we have updated the “You Can Write A Child’s Story” Case for Support booklet that outlines the many opportunities for giving. We have also produced a video that, with the assistance of some of our youth, tells the story of the Foundation’s successful outcomes.

All of our special events this past fiscal year have exceeded their goals financially. We even succeeded in shattering the doldrums of winter as we launched our first “Network & Glamp” event in February. Camping with glamour at the beautiful Fourteen Restaurant. Who could ask for a better afternoon, especially knowing that dozens of children will attend summer camp as a result.

We are about to enter the final year of this particular campaign. All signs point to the fact that we will meet our 5 year, $2 million goal. As you will note by the listing of donors in this report, our community really does care and for this we are extremely grateful. If you would like to “Write A Child’s Story”, WECAF is here to help you do so. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “History will judge us by the difference we make in the everyday lives of our children”.

Respectfully Submitted,

Cheryl Sprague, President
