A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Last year, Catholic Charities marked its 90th year of service to those in need within our communities – truly a rich and devoted record of service. The organization as the charitable arm of the Archdiocese of Omaha also used this time as an opportunity to assess its future services and make some changes in light of insufficient government funding and increasing regulations. The monetary impact of this growing gap in reimbursements is reflected in our financials this past year.

The primary objectives identified following these discussions included moving away from government funding and collaborating more closely with the archdiocese in serving our most vulnerable neighbors. These decisions led to the transferring to other providers many of our residential substance abuse and mental health counseling services, thereby reducing the size of the organization but also increasing our focus on fulfilling our mission as a faith-based organization.

Through closer collaboration with parishes and the goals of the archdiocese and the wider church, Catholic Charities will continue to be the hands, feet and voice of Christ to those in need by enabling the Works of Mercy to be received and lived through our shared work. Although our challenges are great, our God is greater. Together, we will continue to make a difference in the lives of so many.

This is an exciting new path and one that I am sure will continue to yield rich rewards for both the giver and receiver. While I will be stepping away from the organization, I am extremely grateful for the privilege to have served in this role these past eight years. I am also very enthusiastic about the new leadership of the organization and hope that you - our contributors - will increase your support to ensure the continued success of Catholic Charities and those together we so devotedly serve.

Look what happened in 2016!We continue our partnerships with organizations like Saving Grace and Food Bank of the Heart-land to support our Food Pantries at the Juan Diego Center and the St. Martin de Porres Center.

Thousands of people are fed healthy, nutritious foods every year through these collaborations.

The Catholic Charities St. Martin de Porres Center honored those who have served in the armed forced and remembered those we have lost in a special Veteran’s Day ceremony.

The senior program at St. Martin de Porres meets three times a week, providing socialization, education and meals for seniors in North Omaha.

Students in the Microbusiness and Asset Development Program at the Nebraska State Penitentiary wrote business plans and graduated from the program, looking forward to reentering society with a brighter future and utilizing the resources offered.

Staff in Adoption Services celebrated another family coming together as the LeRiger brothers discovered the sister they never knew they had.

Our Adoption Services staff reunites families and facilitates infant adoptions throughout the Archdiocese of Omaha.

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert toured the Juan Diego Center in July, 2016.

The Juan Diego Center hosts a food pantry, the Microbusiness and Asset Development program, the Latina Resource Center and Immigration Legal Services.

140 people participated in The Hunger Run 5k, which raised vital funds for the Catholic Charities Food Pantries.

Runners enjoyed a new, challenging route at Lake Zorinsky. A beautiful day was a blessing for everyone!

The fourth annual Columbus Golf Outing in August was a fun, exciting day of golf with all proceeds benefiting the Columbus Community Center.

Over 90 golfers joined in on the fun and made a difference for Catholic Charities’ services in Columbus, Nebraska.

Irish Fest Plearaca on March 19, 2016 was a huge success! Over 500 people raised over $500,000 to support the life changing and life saving services at Catholic Charities.

The St. Martin de Porres Sazzy Seniors enjoyed a day with the Big Garden project. The Big Garden project visits with the seniors in the summer and they learn to plant and maintain the vegetables and herb garden outside the Center. Seniors are then able to take home all of the fresh fruits and vegetables they grow and send them home with clients in the St. Martin de Porres food pantry.

The Catholic Charities Junior Board hosted the 9th annual Hoops for Hope event prior to the Creighton Bluejays home basketball game on December 3.
