Project Rationale:
The corona virus pandemic was first confirmed on 9 March 2020, in Karnataka
state. The lockdown has already disproportionately hurt marginalized communities
due to loss of livelihood and lack of food, shelter, health, and other basic needs. The
COVID 19 lockdown strategy after 3rd May in order to free up unaffected area has
been made by the government, as per the national COVID 19 guidelines, districts are
divided into green with zero Covid- 19 cases, orange with less than five cases and red
if there are more than six COVID-19 cases. Uttara Kannada district is under Orange
zone. There are 794 endosulfan pesticide affected victims in Sirsi-Siddapura, Ankola-
Kumta & Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannanda district. These victims are in urgent
need of support as they can’t work, their care givers are daily wage labourer and their
income is impacted and they are in remote locations they do not have access to
essential items.
Endosulfan victims are those who had an adverse effect due to aerial and hand
spray of endosulfan to control the pest during the early part of 1980’s. Most of the
people lost their active parts of the body and mental balance too. The new born babies
also got severely affected making them totally inactive and immobile. One can
imagine the disaster caused by the endosulfan spray and the socio-economic damage
made on mankind. The life of Victims and their family members are miserable in all
aspects due to lack of care and facilities which needs to be looked into.
SCODWES is working for these victims since last 4 years & providing health care
services at their door steps through our Mobile Medical Unit initiative with the help of
Department of Health & Family welfare, Govt of Karnataka.
These 794 endosulfan victims are spread over 218 villages in 26 Panchayats of Sirsi-
Siddapur, Ankola- Kumta & Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannada district. To support
these marginalized communities during the outbreak of pandemic and lockdown, there
is need of supply of essential items like grocery and hygiene kits. We have planned to
provide dry ration and non-food essential items to these 794 endosulfan victims’
families.
Project Objective:
• To provide the basic essential needs to the Endosulfan victims and their care
givers to minimize their discomfort during lockdown.
• To minimize spreading of COVID-19 in the community by creating awareness
among the community.
Geography:
218 villages of Sirsi- Siddapura, Ankola –Kumta & Honnavar taluk of Uttara Kannada
district.
Target Segment: The project beneficiaries are the 794 endosulfan victims, their
family members of 218 villages in 26 Gram Panchayats (where these Endosulfan
affected families reside) of Sirsi- Siddapura, Ankol- Kumta & Honnavar Taluk of
Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka state.

ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19
PRESIDENT’S NOTE
I have the pleasure of sharing with you the 14th Annual Report of SCODWES for the year ending 2018-19. From the organisation’s perspective, this has been a vital year in terms of growth, outreach and the results thereof. We have worked hard in achieving our goals and ensuring the overall development of the underprivileged communities we serve.
SCODWES has made an indelible mark in rural healthcare through Mobile Medical Units in North Canara, Davanagere and Bellary districts. We have also implemented Mallapur Health Centre, under the CSR sponsorship of NPCIL, and four Mobile Medical Units for Endosulfan victims in North Canara district. These initiatives have positioned us as a leading player in Karnataka’s rural healthcare sector and won the appreciation of World Bank, Health department and other stakeholders. We have also made a significant impact through our Childline-1098 programme in North Canara district.
In the agricultural sector, SCODWES has successfully completed Integrated Watershed Management Programme in North Canara district and Savayava Bhagya Yojane Project in Tumakuru, Udupi and North Canara districts. I am also happy about the progress made by Madhukeshwara Paddy Producers Cooperative Society in Sirsi Taluk, assisted by NABARD, towards improving the livelihood of small and marginal farmers. Through our NETFISH programme, we have created awareness about hygienic and sustainable fish management across the coastal belt of North Canara, and extending to Goa. We have worked actively in the field of Resettlement and Rehabilitation by successfully implementing Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project-III and Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd. project.
In recent years we have emerged as a key player in the field of skill development, by implementing Skill for Life programme, under the CSR sponsorship of HSBC, and Skill India programme, supported by FVTRS. I take this opportunity to thank our board members and team for their immense support in fulfilling our mission. I also thank our various sponsors and programme partners for their valuable contribution towards extending our support to many more deserving beneficiaries. We look forward to yet another year of uplifting the lives of the needy and neglected.
