Losing a loved one can be one of the most difficult challenges we face in a

lifetime. Providing compassion and dignity through the touch of a hand or a caring word can make a profound difference.

When I returned to the Board of Providence TrinityCare Hospice after being away for seven years, I was determined to do more than simply listen to presentations, read reports and review financial statements. Given the many friends and relatives who have received hospice care and the projected demand for palliative and hospice care among baby boomers, I dedicated myself to making meaningful contributions for this worthy cause.

I recently joined our medical director Dr. Glen Komatsu when he visited two of our patients. It was truly a study of contrasts: the patients were more than 80 years apart in age – one an innocent child, the other a wise elder – polar opposites in every way. However, these patients shared a common bond of compassionate care delivered by our teams.

These were sobering, yet uplifting experiences because they reinforced what I already knew: TrinityCare’s staff and volunteers pride themselves by providing consistent, quality care for all our patients. It takes a truly special person to provide comforting end-of-life service to patients, while at the same time supporting the needs of patients’ family members.

Our 2012 Annual Report is filled with tributes and testimonies from patients and family mem-bers. These accolades belong to everyone associated with TrinityCare Hospice, particularly our generous donors.

We thank our corporate friends, such as Western National Group, Honda and Toyota, and our supportive community groups, including Sandpipers, Vistas for Children and Las Candalistas. From supporting our Necessities of Life Program to the Douglas and J. Glass Family Center, our donors allow us to accomplish our mission.

While we wish a children’s hospice program would not be necessary, the well-deserved recog-nition of the TrinityKids Care program led us to increase our service to more than 200 children in 2012. Last year also saw us add new doctors and nurse practitioners to care for our increas-

ing patient population. We also moved to our new home at the Douglas and J. Glass Family Center in Torrance.

On behalf of our devoted Board of Directors, we thank all of you for your unwavering support. Admittedly, hospice may not be a top-of-mind charitable organization; at least not until a family seeks quality end-of-life care. Because of you, Trinity-Care’s team is trained and ready to provide whatever care is needed for a loved one.

A Path of Perseverance


M. douglas was the son of migrant workers who became an Orange County developer, believing in quality housing at a fair price. Mr. Jerrold glass was his partner at Western Na-tional group, and was known for his business acumen, sound wisdom and generous giving. Jerry and his wife, Jacky, both served on the Board of directors at Providence TrinityCare Hospice and Jacky continues to be our Commu-nity Ambassador. it was Jacky’s vision to create this “Center of Excellence.” Both Mr. douglas and Mr. glass are deceased, but through their estates and generous giving, the douglas and J. glass Family Center is now a reality.

This state-of-the-art education center houses Providence TrinityCare Hospice, the Schneider institute for Nursing, the Palliative Care insti-tute and Providence Home Health. No patients are treated at the center. Rather it holds a high-tech research and simulation training center utilizing computerized manikins, tech-nology-equipped classroom space and offices. The mannequins are programmed to portray symptoms, to talk and even to die, providing physicians, nurses, social workers and members of the home healthcare staff hands-on models to hone their skills in the latest protocols.

in addition, a small, comfortable consultation room is equipped with numerous unobtrusive video cameras to record staged conversations, much like the very sensitive talks that occur between caregivers and family members.

Utilizing audio visual equipment, video confer-encing and integrated briefing software, Provi-dence TrinityCare Hospice is able to share this expertise with all clinicians and staff members within the Providence organization and other hospices and palliative care programs as well.

part of our bereavement support

programs, we help families cope

with the loss of a loved one.

“When my son’s father died suddenly our family, as we knew it, changed forever. Even though i was still here as his mother, my grief was so intense that he really lost both parents. How does a person who is grieving herself nurture someone else in their grief?

Thank goodness for The gathering Place. Through their teen program, TAg, they have created a ‘cocoon’ in providing a safe haven to discuss death, grief and mourning.

By hearing other kids share, my son began sharing too. He felt safe, listened to, understood and a lot more ‘normal.’ He opened up more in discussing his feelings.

He knew he was not alone. Nor was he judged. This ‘magic’ even flowed into his conversations with me and we were/are able to speak freely and honestly. The residual effect and bonus TAg has provided my son is the priceless compassion he holds for others and carries forward to this day.

Life has gone on and though he misses his dad each and every day, healing has occurred. i thank The gathering Place for being there for both of us. it is truly a gift of love and compassion for others.”

A Testament to Commitment The path would not be complete without our

employees and volunteers, the unsung heroes who

devote countless hours dedicated to the care and

comfort of our patients. Our employee campaign

netted $35,000, which is a testament to the

commitment of our dedicated employees.

in addition, we salute all of our selfless volunteers.

Two of our wonderful volunteers have provided

transportation in the TrinityKids Care van, for our

pediatric patients and their families. dan and Bob

have driven hundreds of miles to assure safe and

comfortable rides to and from essential medical

appointments for the youngest of those we serve.

Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, the

parents of these infants and children no longer have

to spend hours on end using public transportation,

often having to travel great distances, to get to

their appointments. Bob, a longtime volunteer and

dan who has been with us less than a year, both say

that their reason for volunteering is “to give back

and be of service to those in need.” Thank you to all

our volunteers!

FooD AND WINE FESTIVAL Once again TrinityKids Care was chosen to be a benefactor, along with Sandpipers as the co-benefactor, in the For Our Children Food and Wine Festival presented by Honda. This event raised over $126,000 with $63,000 each for TKC and Sandpipers philanthropic programs. Guests wined and dined on food and beverages from premier restaurants and wineries, bid on auction items, and one lucky winner went home with a 2013 Honda Insight EX Hybrid with Navigation, generously donated by American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Providence TrinityCare Hospice Foundation celebrated with over 130 longtime friends and donors at the Embassy Dinner held at the Westin Long Beach Hotel. The Glass Family Award for Philanthropy, Leadership and Service was bestowed upon Scott and Jan Sharpe for their dedication

to and heartfelt support of the programs and services of Provi-dence TrinityCare Hospice Foun-dation. The Sharpes, who have been involved with our organi-zation for over 20 years, exhibit a selfless approach to volun-teerism, a tremendous spirit of kindness and compassion, and an unparalleled devotion.


What would we do without our friends in the community? We are grateful to so many organizations that play such a large role in the PTCHF story. Palos Verdes Juniors, National Charity League, Las Candalistas, Vistas for Children, Neighborhood Church, Girl Scouts of America, and Sandpipers have donated a steady stream of supplies and funds each and every year. From For Our Children, to “adopting” families in need, our community helps meet every need from the basic Necessities of Life for our patients and their families, to sustaining our growing programs and services.

BY THE SEA FooD AND WINE TASTING GALA For many years, our annual food and wine tasting gala has been in-viting guests to enjoy fabulous food and wine from some of the finest restaurants and wineries in the area. All pro-ceeds, which net over $200,000, are used to support the programs and services of Providence TrinityCare Hospice. Key to this support is City National Bank, our presenting sponsor of the event. In addition to providing key finan-cial support, City National helps to underwrite some of the costs such as printing and wine glasses. “It’s a privilege to support an organization that is doing such important work in our community,” said Samantha Davies, Senior Vice President of Marketing for City National Bank. “City National Bank values our partnership with Providence TrinityCare Hospice and we applaud them for all they do to touch the lives of so many,” she added.

LIGHT UP A LIFE TREES SHINE BRIGHTLY THRoUGHoUT

THE HoLIDAY SEASoN Throughout December, holiday trees at the Westin Long Beach Hotel, D’Cache in Toluca Lake, and Red Car Brewery in Torrance were adorned with special stars donated in memory of lost loved ones. Gifts from these special trees totaled over $35,000 and were used to provide the comfort of hospice and warmth of the holiday season to the lives of our neediest patients and their families.

Providence TrinityCare Hospice foundation hosted its Circle of Compassion benefactors at the Depot Restaurant in Torrance. While feasting family style on Chef Michael Shafer’s gourmet lunch, Providence TrinityCare had the opportunity to honor and thank our special friends who have made the commitment to name our foundation in their estate plans or have made a planned gift.

Keynote speaker, Ms. Linda Davis Taylor, CEO of Clifford Swan Investment Counsel spoke about the importance of leaving your legacy to an organization whose core values correspond with your family’s values. Moving comments were made by board members Ned Mansour and Scott Sharpe with a reflec-tion from Circle member Phil Jue. Director Tom Sullivan gave each guest a signed copy of his book, “A Short Life Well Lived.”
