City Council President Speaks to Pastors,Community Leaders
Providence Cristo Rey was joined by The Oaks Academy in hosting apastor prayer breakfast featuring keynote speaker, City Council President
Maggie Lewis. More than 30 pastors and community leaders joinedtogether to celebrate the holiday season and share their goals for
education. Lewis told pastors and community leaders: "I am a wife, amother, but most of all I am a Christian." Lewis spoke about being thefirst member of her family to attend college saying, "My mother had meat age 16 and I watched her struggle over the years but she also taught
me early on that I am not a product of my environment."

Lewis earned a BS degree in community health and an MS in publicadministration from Indiana State University. She has dedicated her
career to serving the public and those in need. Lewis is the first AfricanAmerican woman in council history to hold the position of president. "Asa community we must ensure our babies have the tools to be successfuland to have quality education," said Lewis. Also speaking at the PastorPrayer Breakfast were Darin Gray, Director of Corporate Partnerships forFamily First, Jeff Woods, Regional Director of The Expectations Project,and Dennis Barlow, Vice Chair of the Oaks Board of Trustees. Talkingabout the importance of early childhood education and access to qualityschools, Woods said: "You want to know what excellence and caring
looks like? Take a tour of Providence Cristo Rey."
Students Excel in Pilot Technology Program
"Financial Futbol," "Coding," "Persona,"and "Prototype" were just a fewof the buzz words exchanged in the halls of the IUPUI School of
Informatics and Computing when 15 PCRHS juniors were recognized for

taking part in a pilot technology program. The semesterend programoffered students the chance to present posters describing their original
web applications.
Providence Cristo Rey is part of a pilot program offered through IUPUI Schoolof Informatics.and Computing.
Providence Cristo Rey High School was the original pilot school and isnow one of only three schools in the city to take part in a pilot program,"iDEW Informatics: DiversityEnhanced Workforce,' sponsored by
Chase JP Morgan and IUPUI. The program was designed to engage adiverse student population to information technology. "It is predicted thatthere will be 1.4 million IT jobs by 2020. Only 3% of that is representedby minorities," said Mathew Palakal, Executive Associate Dean, School
of Informatics and Computing.

The iDEW program brings college graduate students and professors intothe high school classrooms to teach specific IT classes. This semester's

focus was on a challenge presented by Old National Bank Learningabout Financial Literacy. Students created apps and programs engaging
clients to learn more about financial literacy. Through the course,students learned to code, research, collaborate, problem solve and reactto client feedback. The program continues into the summer with a six
week workshop.
Providence Cristo Rey Joins Catholic Relief Effort
As part of our efforts to instill the importance of service learning,Providence Cristo Rey is one of the first local schools to join Catholic
Relief Services Global High School Program. The initiative is designed tohelp educate high school students about Catholic Social Learning and tolive out advocacy through service. As part of the program, ProvidenceCristo Rey will take part in in two schoolwide efforts focused on social
justice issues.
In a recent presentation to key stakeholders, Joesph W. Tobin,Archbishop of Indianapolis, talked about the strong community supportfor Catholic Education and how the mission of Providence Cristo Rey
