Annual Report 2011-12 1

Greetings!

The 2011-12 school year marked the sixth year of operation for Providence Cristo Rey High School (PCRHS), and it has been one of remarkable change. We began the year energized by a five-year financial plan that charts a course for growth to 350 students while reducing the cost per student by 54% by 2016. When the year ended, we had enrolled a record 140 students to start the fall 2012 semester.

We intend to grow PCRHS purposefully, with an emphasis on three key areas:

• recruiting students through strategic relationships with community organizations and schools;

• increasing awareness of the effectiveness of our distinctive Corporate Work Study program; and

• enhancing the positive learning environment through updating our physical plant and technology, providing specialized training for our dedicated faculty and staff, and promoting a culture of teamwork and achievement.

A series of facility improvements were recently implemented to increase the square footage of instructional space as well as technology upgrades that will allow us to better serve our students. Specifically, we added wireless connectivity in every classroom, and several more classrooms received SMART boards, interactive white boards, to increase and enhance student participation and engagement in the classroom. Additional facility improvements are planned for the 2013-14 school year, which will include upgrades to out-of-date classrooms, life safety systems, food service areas, and much needed repairs to the exterior of the building. We owe a special debt of gratitude to our partners at DEEM, Shiel Sexton and DAST Consulting for their tireless efforts in upgrading a 106 year-old building into a highly functional facility with the technological and space requirements essential to our mission. Four highly qualified individuals have been added to our staff who will better position us to meet our enrollment and financial goals, and ensure that our students receive the guidance they need to thrive and succeed. The Director of Communications and Marketing is positioning us strategically in a very competitive school marketplace; the Vice President of Corporate Work Study and Institutional Advancement is strengthening our ability to recruit new corporate partners and key supporters of our mission; the new Dean of Students is contributing to a collaborative environment for student success; and the new Director of Finance is continuing to streamline the operation of our Business Office. As we have in the past, we continue to make significant investments in in three necessary student support service providers: our guidance counselor, social worker, and campus minister.

Indiana’s progressive school choice legislation has brought many new schools to our city. Providence Cristo Rey competes with a high degree of effectiveness because of our careful attention to providing continuous professional development for our faculty, a first rate college preparatory curriculum, and a transformational Corporate Work Study experience that produces successful outcomes virtually unmatched in the city.

Our students have been given the opportunity to go to college, become career professionals, and achieve a dream that was once beyond their reach. Without your help, none of this would have been possible, and for that we, and our students, will always be eternally grateful.

Sincerely,

Joseph P. HeidtPresident

Taylor dickMeyerPCRHS Class of 2011Indiana State University nursing student

never, ever give up It takes a special person to be a nurse. In addition to being able to care deeply for others, a nurse must be diligent, organized, open-minded, and a team-player. Taylor Dickmeyer will quickly tell you that you need the same qualities to be a student at Providence Cristo Rey.

“Many things I learned in high school classes still pop up in college, like being able to answer difficult questions in class and writing at a college level. Especially being a nursing student, the time management skills I learned on the job have helped me manage a difficult course load while working at the same time,” she says.

Annual Report 2011-12 3

Taylor, who graduated from PCRHS in 2011 and is now in the nursing program at Indiana State University, knew from a young age that she wanted to be in healthcare. In fact, on her application to PCRHS, she indicated she wanted to be a pediatrician. As providence would have it, she was matched with St.Vincent Health in her freshman year for her Corporate Work Study placement, and there she remained for all four years of high school.

“Everyone at St.Vincent, especially the Rural and Urban Access to Health program, supported me. They always wanted to know how I was doing in school, but they also went out of their way to look for neat opportunities that I could participate in, and showed great interest in my plans for the future,” says Taylor. In her senior year, she shadowed Jill Perry, a nurse at the St.Vincent Heart Hospital, and it was then she began to realize nursing might be for her.

Eventually she found her way to Indiana State University, encouraged by the nurses at St.Vincent and the comfortable size of the campus. She also found she was well-equipped with valuable skills other college freshmen lacked, in particular, reading and writing. Teamwork and communication, which Taylor says are essential to the success of group projects and collaboration, are skills where

she really shines because of her experience in the Corporate Work Study program, though her diligence is what sets her apart from the crowd.

“I know I have to be confident in my work and take on the challenges college presents; no one is there to motivate me, but me! I am the one who is ultimately responsible for my success.”

Before she arrived at PCRHS, Taylor doubted she would even go to college, in part because there were so few positive educational role models other than her older brother Travis, a Butler University graduate who teaches in Brownsburg. She hopes to be that role model for her younger brother, Tylar, who is in high school.

“I’ve been taught to make a better life for myself so that I won’t have to struggle. My family pushes me to do my best and never give up. Providence Cristo Rey encouraged me to take advantage of my educational opportunities, and here I am.”

educational choice charitable TrustGreat News for Providence Cristo Rey High School Donors

Providence Cristo Rey High School currently receives more Educational CHOICE Trust scholarship funding than any other high school in Indiana. These scholarships are a significant benefit to our students, and the tax credit is an asset to our donors, as well. We encourage you to consider this unique opportunity.

A School Scholarship Tax Credit is now available for individuals or corporations who donate to scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) for the purpose of supporting Providence Cristo Rey’s students through funding scholarships, grants, and financial aid.

The tax credit is equal to 50% of the amount donated and is used to reduce your Indiana state income tax liability. In addition to the direct state tax reduction, you also receive a federal tax deduction for your contribution. The following example illustrates an individual’s after tax (state and federal) cost of a donation assuming a 30% federal income tax bracket:

Learn more or make a gift by visiting our web site at www.pcrhs.org/news/news.aspx?newsid=65 and click on the “make a scholarship gift” link.

1 The net federal deduction is equal to the contribution less the state tax credit as state taxes are deductable for federal income tax purposes.2 Actual after tax cost will vary based on your individual income tax status.

In 1987, two young men with ambition and an entrepreneurial vision founded a small accounting firm in Indianapolis. Steve Dauby and Sean O’Connor were joined a year later by Ted Zaleski, and the nationally recognized firm with expertise in real estate accounting and multifamily finance known as Dauby O’Connor & Zaleski was born. At the time, none of the three imagined the profound impact they would have on thousands of lives right at home in Indy.

Now celebrating its 25th year, DOZ numbers 150 employees who occupy a company-owned 60,000 square foot building in Carmel, Indiana, that was acquired and substantially renovated in 2010 with funding from the Small Business

Administration. The company is the definition of what the SBA means when it says “America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs are the engine of our economy,” but the statistics and status as an economic engine are not what truly define this firm, at least not according to partner Sean O’Connor.

“All of the employees at DOZ realize the importance of giving back to our community, and they are the ones who are providing meaningful service to people and organizations in our city,” says O’Connor. About three years ago, the firm created the DOZ Charitable Foundation as a way to pool the broad range of resources represented by the company’s associates. Employees, not partners, sit on the foundation board, and employees manage the financial assets and make decisions about which organizations to support.

“Our staff is energetic, young, and hardworking. They are also very client focused, but one of the points of pride for me is their generosity and willingness to become involved in different ways with our clients and also with the community,” O’Connor says. It’s not corporate culture they

are creating, but corporate character that O’Connor believes is the distinction setting them apart from other CPA firms.

For Wendy Ketterman, Manager of Administration at DOZ, another distinction is the firm’s innovative approach to workforce development. “Over 90 percent of the college students who did internships with DOZ in 2012 received a fulltime job offer, and it’s because we challenge them and give them responsibility,” she says. Interns complete audits and prepare tax returns, gaining experience and connecting classroom concepts to workplace realities.

Ketterman also manages the firm’s Corporate Work Study partnership with Providence Cristo Rey High School, a distinctive work-study model that requires each high school student to work one day a week in a professional, white collar job. “We have three students this year, LaTreesa, Kyndall, and Elijah, and they are all amazing kids. Each year I’m amazed by the competency of the students, and their enthusiasm to learn,” says Ketterman with a smile. Students work side-by-side with associates on projects, learning basics like data entry and filing, organization of documents, and also utilizing application software. They also learn time management, self-confidence, and how to communicate appropriately and effectively in a workplace environment.

“Our associates love this program because they see the personal and professional growth in the students, and know it’s a result of their time and involvement with that student. It becomes a meaningful relationship over the course of the school year.”

donor profile

DOZ has been a Corporate Work Study partner with the school for five years, but the engagement began with O’Connor, who joined the Board of Directors in 2008. He now serves as Vice Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Finance/Institutional Advancement Committee. Others became involved through DOZ’s Community Outreach Committee, which organized employee volunteers for two projects at the school; in 2010 during the CPA Day of Service and in 2012 as part of the Central Indiana Service Challenge.

Another group jumped in to help at the school’s annual fundraising event, for which DOZ has been the lead sponsor the past two years. Marketing Director Gemi Ozdemir served as emcee and 10 staffers provided the gift processing and check-out services at the end of the night. “We identified an effective software program and between that and our back-office expertise, we saved the event attendees a lot of time and the school a lot of hassle,” laughs O’Connor. He realized this was a service DOZ could streamline for non-profits while adding yet another dimension of the multi-faceted relationship between DOZ and Providence Cristo Rey.

Perhaps the most extraordinary measure of this special relationship came in 2011, when PCRHS was searching for a new Director of Finance to lead the school through a reorganization of its business procedures. The Finance Committee of the Board was tapped to assist, including O’Connor, who had a radical idea. “Essentially, I suggested

that the school hire one of our auditors into the position during this critical transition. We could help oversee the process as they established new procedures,” says O’Connor. The auditor, Victoria Foulke, managed the process smoothly and stayed through a successful audit at the end of the school’s fiscal year. In October, she returned to DOZ as a senior auditor after helping hire the permanent Director of Finance.

“DOZ’s involvement with our school is the perfect example of how broad a company’s relationship can be with us,” said Joseph P. Heidt, President of PCRHS. “There are so many ways that a company can engage, and the people of DOZ, especially Sean O’Connor and Victoria Foulke, reflect the level at which individuals can share in the mission of our school,” he continued.

“Helping our kids succeed can be done in many ways, from volunteering at an event, to supervising a student during the work day, to making a gift. How you do that is part of your own DNA, your own corporate character.”

Gemi Ozdemir serves as the emcee of Providence Cristo Rey’s annual fundraising event.

Anyone who has ever attended a silent auction knows that checking out at the end of the evening can be a challenging process. The accountants at DOZ make everything run smoothly at the annual PCRHS raffle and auction.

Providence Cristo Rey High School’s partnership with many of the most recognizable companies in Indianapolis is changing the face of education in our city. Students work each week in a professional, entry level job; a resource that is a considerable cost savings for companies. In return, students gain valuable work experience, learn good work habits and time management, begin career preparation, networking, and building their resume. Through the Corporate Work Study program, students earn a portion

of their tuition, making the dream of a private, college preparatory education a reality.

Through collaborative efforts, Partners of Providence help urban youth with limited financial resources pursue their career goals through successful completion of high school and acceptance into college. Partners of Providence support the mission of Providence Cristo Rey High School in educating urban youth with limited financial resources, and nominate families whose

children may benefit from the school’s college preparatory curriculum and distinctive Corporate Work Study program.
