Custom Fuel CellsAll Fuel Safe custom fuel cells are built using our flexible bladder technology. We utilize only the highest quality certified materials. All Fuel Safe custom fuel cells are handmade to meet customer specifications. A custom cell usually includes a container, bladder, foam baffling, plates and fittings.

Fuel Safe collaborates with the customer to achieve a Fuel Cell design that is tailor made to provide a perfect fit. The process starts with the customer providing a drawing, sketch, mock-up, model or old tank. From this beginning Fuel Safe helps the customer refine their requirements.

A brief list of the factors that go into finalizing the design follows; type of fuel, type of use (road race, off road, marine, etc), fill valve (size, type and location), fittings (size, type and location), need for container, container material, orientation of the cell in the vehicle and internals (collectors, baffles, pumps, pick-up location etc). Once all of the parameters have been set and the customer confirms the design, work can begin.

When ordering a custom fuel cell please consider the following. A fuel cell by its nature will hold less fuel than a simple container. The decrease in capacity can vary from as little as 5% to as much as 20%, depending on complexity of the cell and internal fitments. Fuel Safe has a broad dealer network and in many cases the customer can work with the dealer's knowledgeable sales staff to specify and purchase their custom fuel cell. Working through the process of specifying and ordering a custom fuel cell takes time, allow 2 to 6 weeks.

GlossaryPickup - The hose and/or fitting through which fuel will be delivered to the engine.

Raw - Untreated plates and fittings, no finish applied (do not use with alcohol).

Remote Fill - A cell that is filled other than with a cap mounted directly on the cell.

Return - A fitting or hose through which excess fuel is sent back to a cell.

Safety (crash worthy) Fuel Cell - A safety fuel cell is a fuel containment system that typically includes four main components: a steel or aluminum container (the can), a fuel bladder (this provides the crash protection), safety baffling foam for fuel slosh mitigation and explosion protection, and a fill plate.

Sender (fuel level sender) - Typically an electronic item that measures fuel level.

Shoe Box Lid - A lid that fits over the container but is not physically connected.

Slip-in Bottom - A container bottom not physically attached to the can.

Standard Fill - A cell that is filled through a cap mounted directly on the cell.

Vent Valve - A valve that allows air to enter or exit a fuel cell. Most vent valves employ some type of rollover protection (a check valve) that prevents fuel loss in the event of a vehicle rollover.

Width - The measurement from front to back of the cell in the car (typically cells are mounted in a vehicle with the longest dimensions left to right.)

4 x 6 plate - A standard size, 12-bolt oval plate which covers a 4” by 6” hole; the plate measures approximately 5” x 7”.

6 x 10 - A standard size 24-bolt oval plate that covers a 6” by 10” hole; the plate measures 7.625” x 11.625”.

Alcohol Fuels (Methanol, Ethanol) - This fuel can be harmful to safety foam and certain bladder materials; aluminum hardware should be treated.

AN Fittings - A mil spec standard for fitting sizes. AN fittings and NPT fittings are not interchangeable. A dash in AN terminology is the hose size the fitting is designed to work with. Each dash represents 1/16 of an inch; e.g., a -8 fitting equals 8/16 or a 1/2" hose, a -12 equals 12/16 or a 3/4" hose.

Baffle (bladder material) - Deflects fuel surge in a cell for better performance.

Foam Baffling (Safety Foam) - Minimizes fuel slosh while providing explosion resistance.

B.C. (Bolt Circle) - The diameter of an imaginary circle drawn through the center of each bolt hole; also referred to as the bolt pattern.

Bung - A weld-in threaded fitting that will accept AN or pipe fittings; must specify AN or NPT and size.

Can - The enclosure (container) that provides containment and protection for a bladder, usually metal.

Check Ball/Check Valve - A device that allows flow in one direction only.

Collector/Surge Tank - An area within a cell that traps/contains fuel to ensure steady supply & maximum usage.

Dry Break Valves - Valves that form a relatively leak-proof connection for rapid refueling.

External Flange - Can flange that extends outward and provides a flat surface for bolting the can lid to the can body and can be used to mount the can in the car.

Fill Plate - A steel or aluminum plate that typically has a fill neck, fuel pickup fitting, vent fitting, provisions for a sending unit and wire harness. Fill plates come standard with all of our complete catalog fuel cells.

Flapper Valve - A rollover check valve used in standard fill applications.

Height - The measurement from top to bottom of the bladder or container listed.

Hydrocarbon Fuels (Gasoline, Diesel, AVGAS) - A fuel that requires specific materials to be used in the construction of a fuel cell. This fuel will damage alcohol-specific bladders.

Internal Flange - A can flange that extends inward to provide a flat surface to bolt on a can access cover.

Length - The measurement from right to left as the cell sits in the car (typically cells are mounted with the longest dimension left to right; your application may differ).

Nipple - A fabric reinforced flexible outlet or inlet into which a tube can be clamped.

Nut-Ring - A metal ring on the inside of bladder openings that has threads to accept bolts securing a plate.

Orientation - Orientation is as the driver sits; for instance, the left side of the car is the driver's left.

Outlet - A fitting or nipple on the fuel cell through which fuel is drawn out of the fuel cell and delivered to the engine; e.g., a fuel pickup fitting.
