THEATRE BY THE SEA(www.theatrebythesea.com),which is on the National Regis-ter of Historic Places, has hadmany incarnations over theyears. The Tyler family pur-chased the property in the early‘20s. After Alice Tyler was left awidow with three young chil-dren, she ran the property as asummer camp for girls. Whenthe depression hit, she decidedto create jobs and provide a fu-ture for her children by turningthe barn into a theatre. The 300-seat theatre opened on August7, 1933 with a production calledStrictly Dynamite. That initialseason lasted four weeks andfeatured four different plays, oneof which was taken to New York.In 1938, a Yale Cooperative tookover. Then, on September 2, ahurricane hit. The back wall ofthe theatre caved in and thestage roof was blown off. Duringthe repairs, the theater was ex-panded to include a balcony. The newly enlarged theatre op-erated through 1941 and thenwent dark during the war. In1946, the theatre’s most glam-orous and star-filled periodbegan. The theatre becamewhat is referred to as a “star-sys-

tem” house opening with ashow called Dream Girl whichstarred Judy Holliday. Otherheadliners who were brought inwere Tallulah Bankhead, MaeWest, Groucho Marx and MarlonBrando. Following the 1958 sea-son, the property was sold to theBontecou family, who leased itsporadically for several years, and by 1966 there were plans totear down the theatre. Uponhearing that the theatre was tobe destroyed, Tommy Brent, who had previously worked as apublicist for the theatre, re-turned and saved the theaterfrom demolition. His first showopened on June 23, 1967 and heran the theatre successfully for22 years. In 1988, FourQuest En-tertainment, which consisted ofLaura Harris, (who had previ-ously worked at the theatre for11 summers), Renny Serre andRichard Ericson, came on board.Following extensive renovations,FourQuest reopened the theaterin the spring of 1989 and contin-ued producing high qualitysummer theater in Matunuckuntil the fall of 2003. The theatrewent dark once again until2007, when entrepreneur BillHanney purchased the propertyand, with producing partners, successfully mounted a produc-tion of A Funny Thing Happenedon the Way to the Forum, just sixweeks later, reopening the his-toric theatre on August 8, 2007.Theatre By The Sea continues toproduce a successful four-musicalsubscription season annually.
