About the Bay Did you know the Chesapeake Bay holds about 18 trillion gallons of water? That would fill more than 50 billion bathtubs! Formed nearly 12,000 years ago, the Chesapeake Bay is a 200-mile-long estuary that runs from Havre de Grace, Maryland to Norfolk, Virginia. An estuary is defined as a body of water formed where fresh water mixes with sea water. In the Chesapeake Bay system, 50 major rivers and streams pour into the bay. It is the largest estuary in the United States and third largest in the world. The Chesapeake Bay watershed is home to more than 17 million people and 3,600 species of plants and animals. As Hampton Roads resident, it is important to help “save the bay” and keep our waterways clean. Here are some ways to keep our waterways clean: Don’t litter. Reduce the amount of trash that ends up in the Bay. Use limited fertilizer. Excessive levels of nutrients in the Bay lead to lower levels of oxygen needed for

aquatic life. Scoop the poop. Keep harmful nutrients and bacteria out of waterways by always cleaning up after you

pet. Avoid pouring toxic substances down sinks and storm drains. Contact your city to find free locations to

dispose of hazardous waste properly. Drive less by carpooling and combining errands to limit trips. Vehicle

exhaust is one of the major contributors to air pollution. Buy local foods. Try purchasing produce at farmers’ markets, or join a

Community Supporter Agriculture farm to minimize transportation-related emissions.

Reduce electricity. Coal-burning power plants are among the largest sources of mercury and nitrogen compounds in air pollution.

Educate your children about the importance of the Bay. Visit The Mariner’s Museum, Virginia Living Museum, or Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center for interactive displays on how important the Bay is.

Participate in VIP: Clean the Bay Day on June 3rd. Lincoln will join 6,000 others to help clean areas around the bay in Virginia Beach. For more information and to register for this FREE resident event, visit: www.LincolnMilitaryResident.com.

Keep windows closed and locked when children are around. When opening windows for ventilation, open windows that a child can’t reach. For more tips on how to keep your child safe, visit: www.militaryonesource.mil/safe-and-sound

Have you changed your air filter lately? Filters are recommended to be changed every 30 days.

To submit a request for your air filter to be changed and for all other maintenance issues, you can submit a maintenance request form at www.lincolnmilitary.com/current-residents/

When cooking, keep your range burners and reflectors clean, as clean burners utilize energy more efficiently. For more tips, visit: http://lincolnrecp.com/

It’s OK to give your baby a pacifier, but buy one made of a solid piece of molded plastic, with a shield that is at least 1.5 inches across and has ventilation holes. Never tie the pacifier to the crib, and replace the pacifier as soon as it begins to deteriorate For more tips on how to keep your child safe, visit: www.militaryonesource.mil/safe-and-sound

Local Military Spouses Showered with Love and Surprises

On April 22nd, 100 local military spouses and active duty service members who were recent mothers or expecting were celebrated for their strength, commitment and sacrifice at the Operation Homefront Star-Spangled Babies Shower sponsored in part by Lincoln Military Housing. It was a true “Oprah moment” complete with a surprise unveiling that presented the moms and moms-to-be with hundreds of dollars worth of goodies to get them set up for baby. Melissa Stockwell, two-time Paralympian, U.S. Army officer and Purple Heart recipient, was also in attendance to celebrate and provide words of encouragement. It was a time to celebrate with those who may be far away from family and not able to have a traditional baby shower, but for one day we were their family showering them with love and support.
