NatioNal chaplaiN’s wisdomSIXES AND SEVENS

1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed.2 Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”3 The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.4 Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev.5 Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.6 Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.Psalm 126

In the last issue of Sojourner magazine I reflected on the connection between what goes on in a Lodge meeting and what may also be happening in worship. This month I would like to continue in that train of thought.

While I was attending seminary in the mid to late ‘70’s I was also pastoring a four point charge, serving 4 small Methodist churches, in rural middle Georgia. Being a student I was expected to be in classes but I also found I was conducting an abundance of funerals for my aging congregations. One of my instructors, a retired bishop, in checking in with me mused that he hoped and prayed that I was “not boring them to death.”

As I did my first stint of active duty I found that I was blessed with performing a whole lot of weddings and a few funerals. One day I came to the realization that I still could recite the funeral rite just as easily as I could the marriage ceremony. I even kidded some of my couples not to be surprised if I alternated back and forth between the two services. I never did as far as I know.

In 1978 I was appointed a church in Breathitt County, KY. Sunday afternoons were spent at a Sunday school deep in the coal fields. The people basically lived without all the modern conveniences, and spoke Elizabethan King James English. If it was not in the red letter edition it just was not quite right, was imperfect, at sixes and sevens. This year was my second time attending the national convention and I was trying to take it all in. During the Heroes initiation I was encouraged to start memorizing the ritual. Being well past my prime I know my limitations. As I am making my rounds of the local lodges it is becoming clear that a few folk are not quite getting the ritual right. Other lodges have it down pat and take that as the rule and not the exception. These lodges are also growing while others are declining and don’t know why. How many of us have heard it said “close enough for government work” or “close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades?” I am afraid that is unfortunately not true for our lodges.

If in a worship service I think we would question the moving of the Holy Spirit if we experienced the same “spitting and sputtering” in worship. In the midst of memorial ser-vices or ceremonies I insisted that all participants had their remarks in writing and in front of them, if they needed them they would be there, if not so mote it be. I would assume all those occupying the chairs can read if they cannot memorize the rubric of the lodge.

It continues to be my prayer not only for National Sojourners but for ALL the Masonic orders that they will continue to grow and prosper. This may mean getting it ALL done as close to perfect as possible.

Shalom.

NatioNal pREsidENt’s mEssaGEWe are National Sojourners! What does that mean?

This issue’s article was stimulated by a sermon my pastor gave earlier this year titled “What’s in a name?,” where he dis-cussed the name of our church, our denomi-nation and our local body of faith. It also made me think about a movie that was very meaningful to me, “We are Marshall!” Both the question, as well as the exclamation, are, in my opinion, relevant to us.

In attempting to first address the question, “What’s [the significance of our] name,” we need to see what was visualized when the order was created in the Philippines, a club for Freemasons who were members of the U.S. military and stationed in the Philip-pines for Brothers to meet together socially. Although the club formed in the Philippines did not survive, it was later reincarnated in Chicago as an organization whose member-ship was limited to Commissioned Officers of the Armed Forces of the United States who were Master Masons. This newer military Masonic organization later evolved into the organization we are today, National Sojourners, Incorporated.

We are an entity composed of men who are (1) U.S. citizens, (2) Master Masons, and (3) members or former members of the Uniformed Services of the United States in the pay grade of E-7 or higher. These members are denominated by Article III of our By-Laws and National Regulation (NR) 3.1 as “Active Members.” We are also composed of men who are Master Masons that are U. S. citizens who, whether they have served as a member of the Uniformed Services of the United States or not, have been recognized for their exemplary service to the Craft and/or to their city, county and/or state government and/or the charitable organizations operating within one or more

of them. These members are denominated by those same provisions of our By-Laws and NRs as “Honorary Members.” There is, in general, no difference in these members, other than how they came to be members of National Sojourners. Each member, whether he is an Active Member or an Honorary Member, is responsible—has the non-delegable duty—to ensure the continu-ity, progress and growth of the organization each voluntarily joined—their local Chapter.

But why have each of you joined? Was it just to say you are a member—carry an-other dues card, wear another lapel pin—of yet another of the plethora of the appendant Masonic organizations out there to join? Or, have you joined to really be a part of what we allegedly stand for; to really be a part of preserving The Flag, Its History and Its Meaning in this, The United States of America?

What we are and what we stand for is explained to the new initiate in the Sojourner Medal Lecture.

Truthfully, however, when I became a member of National Sojourners in 1984, I really did not know what it meant to be a National Sojourner. I knew that my friend and fellow Naval Officer, John Henderson (PNP 1987), believed that I should be one, and, more importantly, that I was qualified to petition to become one. I had never heard of National Sojourners nor knew what or who they were nor what they did. Over a year later, when invited to become a Hero of ’76 at/in John Henderson’s backyard—yes, that was where I was made a Hero—I think that I was still unsure of what it meant to be a National Sojourner and, then, what it meant to be a Hero of ’76. I really did not under-stand the importance that my being elected to become a National Sojourner was; I had no clue as to what it meant to have been singled out and elected to become a Hero of ’76.

Carrying that thought further since most of us consider our Order to be a very pres-tigious Masonic Order, are we educating our new members, especially those elected “Honorary Members,” as to what it means to be honored by election to membership? Do we bother to offer our new members any catechism in what it means to be a member of our Order beyond giving them a dues card, a name badge and National Sojourners medal? We need to be doing more. We need to be conducting “classes” in what it means to be a member of National Sojourners at our business and social meet-ings. We need to be proud that we are “The Military Masons;” that “We are National Sojourners!”

Thus, having now introduced the excla-mation, just what do I mean by its use? As a reminder, the story of We are Marshall! began when West Virginia’s Marshall Uni-versity, suffered a devastating loss when virtually all of its football team and coaching staff were killed in a plane crash.

Despite their suffocating load of grief and guilt, Marshall’s student body, alumni and fans prevented the cancellation of their football program and its football team arose from the ashes of that plane crash and won at least one game in that next season. A key phrase that the Marshall students, team and fans chanted that described them and their unity was wE aRE maRshall! That is exactly how I feel about us.

WE aRE NATIONAL SOJOURNERS!!Thus, if we believe in the value of our

Order to Masonry and of the personal value to each of us in being affiliated with and a member of our Patriotic Order, then it important for us to stand up and shout that out: We Are National Sojourners!! It is very important for us, just as did the Marshall students, players, coaches and fans, to vo-calize and make evident the pride we have in our Order; the pride we have in being known as and called National Sojourners; the pride we have in being known as and called Heroes of ‘76; the pride we have in being known as and called “the military Masons;” the pride we have in being known for proudly serving the cause of patrio-tism!! If we do so, we, much like Marshall University, will rise from “our ashes,” i.e., the relocation and increased expenses of doing business that has resulted from loss of Collingwood, along with its other effects on us, to even greater heights this year and in the years to come. We, like the fabled phoenix, will be even stronger for having suffered, struggled through, and survived the ordeal.

Bottom line, we must continue spread-ing the good news that We Are National Sojourners who are proudly serving the cause of patriotism!!

Fraternally,

Jim HigdonNational President

FORT HOOD #208, Mr. Douglas J. Lohman, Secretary, 3001 Elmwood Drive, Harker Heights, TX 76548. An informal dinner was held in August to honor CWO3 Thomas E Greenameyer. The dinner was hosted by Maj James Foshee, and was held in the home of LtCdr Robert Gleason, in Georgetown, Texas. Bro. Greenameyer was initiated into our chapter in September of 1989, served as President in 1990/1991, and as Secretary for eleven years 1992 through 2003. Bro. Greenameyer sustained the Life of the chapter through his dedica-tion and work as Secretary. His dedication did not stop there. He also coordinated the John Bell Hood Camp Heroes of ‘76 as Adjutant from 1995 to 2003. In 1999 he received the Horton-Tortelliott Award. Well done Bro. Tom! Footnote: Tom was made a Master Mason in 1986 in Mt. Hiram Lodge #

PASADENA #265, LTC Joe Ryland, Secretary, 5215 Kauffman Ave, Temple City, CA 91780-3948. Our chapter has never had a “money problem”. By spring of every Sojourner year we have very little or no money left in our checking account. Then, our MIP dividend check arrives and we have sufficient money to meet all re-quirements for the next year. We don’t have a budget because we don’t have enough money to make a budget worthwhile. We never sell anything or have raffles. We never ask our members to contribute to anything or “pass the hat” at our chapter meetings. Additionally, we never have fines for infractions of local rules because we have no local rules. This is only one of the reasons that Sojourners from other chapters enjoy visiting our chapter meetings. All So-journers are welcome at our meetings and we extend a hearty handshake to everyone who attends. In the Southern California Area we are known as “that crazy chapter where everybody has fun and Masonic Brother-hood is always present”. Our PNP, Merlen Howe, visited our February chapter meeting and he agrees with this description.

Sec. Henry Hill, announced the success of the Heroes Flag Ceremony with the

Daughters of the War of 1812 in Conroe, Texas and a second presentation of the Flag Program on September 15, 2015 for the Daughters of the American Revolution in Spring, Texas.

During the meeting on October 1, 2015, Mother and entrepreneur, Denise Fries, presented an informative and excellent program regarding Celiac Disorder. Her four year struggle to find the source of her daughter’s debilitating malaise and fright-ening physical symptoms resulted in the discovery that she had a Celiac Disorder. The owner of a financial advisory company for over thirty years, Denise created Tay-lor Made Gluten Free Bakery, named in her daughter’s honor. As she addressed her daughter’s dietary needs, the bakery evolved into the production of a variety of gluten free baked goods and other specialty foods. She now provides gluten free prod-ucts to local markets, and other wholesale marketers. Pursuing a gluten free diet, she explained addresses many sleep disorders, attention deficiency concerns and auto-response diseases. Most could be helped or eliminated with a gluten free diet. Her presentation was followed by a report from Briana Pare, one of four students sponsored by us for participation in Youth Leadership Conference held on the Texas A & M Univer-sity campus. The meeting concluded with a salute to those who had served in the Navy as part of a Tribute to the U. S. Navy Birth-day, October 13, 1775. First Class Petty Officer Alex Eck, assisted with the program reading the History of the Navy. A member of Lodge Maui, he presented Lodge Maui pins and Navy pins to those present. He also filled out a Petition to join. Following the meeting, Sul Ross Camp, Heroes of ’76 held a coordination meeting.

Cross and LS2 Kurt Cameron Trammell II stood side by side and repeated the initiation Oath in unison. Regional Rep. H. Thurl Ray took the opportunity to remind the new Sojourners and all present that “A three-fold cord is not easily broken.” As Sojourners we are bound by the cord of comradery in arms found in our duty in one of the military services of the USA, the cord and bond of fellowship which we em-braced at that sacred alter where we knelt as a Master Mason, and the cord of unity, comradery, and fellowship received when

Box 155J, Augusta, WV 26704. At the regular meeting held in Front Royal, VA on 26 September 2015, a special presentation was made to a member of the Korean War Veterans Association of Winchester, VA. Camp Followers Wanda Lawson and Kathie Anderson gave Maj William Jackson, who is also a member, a bag of red, white, and blue veteran ribbons. These ribbons, which are hand folded and displayed on a printed card, have been especially designed and made by our members to be handed out on Veterans Day, Memorial Day and any other occasion where veterans are pres-ent. The card accompanying the ribbons reads, “FREEDOM IS NOT FREE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.” At the bottom it reads “Provided as a public service of Shenandoah Valley Chapter #543, National Sojourners, Inc.”

These ribbons were also handed out at the Federal Area Conference & Encamp-ment in Fairfax, VA on 22 August 2015. The ribbons come with pins so they may be taken off the card and worn by the recipient. Our members have been passing these ribbons out at various functions and they have always been well received. It is our way of thanking veterans for their duty to our country and their service to their fellow man.

Also in September we made another presentation. This time it was to the VFW Post 2101, in Wardensville, WV, where we presented a statue of a kneeling soldier, which was placed in their newly completed Honor Area. This area is a memorial to each of the Armed Forces with a flag for each service, the National Ensign, and the POW/MIA flag. The statue kneeling beside a cross gives meaningful insight into the supreme sacrifice so many men gave for their country during times of war. It is truly fitting that it should have a place in the VFW Honor Area.

Before you know it we’ll be heading to Austin, TX to attend the coming Mid-Winter Meeting January 14-16, 2016. Ask your primary chapter secretary for a registration form. This MWM is being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Call them direct at (512) 323-5466 to make your reservation. Mention “NATIONAL SO-JOURNERS” ROOM: $109.00. Be sure to sign up to attend Past Master’s Chapter breakfast meeting at 7:30 am January 15th. One of the many programs your Past Master’s Chapter supports is the Youth Leadership Conference. We sponsor one High School Student annually to attend this meeting at Valley Forge, PA. Among other things, this program places emphasis on Patriotism, Americanism and the impor-tance of the US Constitution. Attend our chapter meeting to learn of other programs we sponsor. We look forward to seeing you in Austin, TX next January.

APPLICATIONS fOR MEMBERSHIP

We are seeing a broad range of formats for the Application for Mem-bership. Many of them however do not include the question “Are you a US citi-zen?” If the answer to this is not yes the individual is not eligible to join National Sojourners. Please use the Application form shown at the Membership Tab on the website.

A MESSAGE fROM THE NATIONAL COMMANDER, HEROES Of ‘76

need and help. Those who receive help receive much more benefit than those who have a credit for a tax donation.

Almost daily I receive requests from or-ganizations for donations to support their individual causes. As a results of these appeals, I have the right to select those that are worthy of consideration or set aside those I deem less of a priority or do not choose to support. Likewise it is your prerogative or right to “care and share.”

As you read this article think about the ways you can benefit by caring and shar-ing in this upcoming Holiday Season. The National Sojourners, Inc. has the SEM fund and the SAEF fund. (If you don’t know what the initials stand for, look them up. You will have a better understanding what the “Funds” are).

As you come to the end of this message, I hope the spirit of caring and sharing will move you in the right direction. Don’t wait until tomorrow because the spirit will have moved on, and caring and sharing may not be high on your priority list.

The few months that I have been serv-ing as you National Commander have been a time of sharing and caring. I have visited Freedoms Foundation, PA; Moores Creek, Curie, North Carolina; Hampton, New Hampshire; FACE in Fairfax, Virginia: Supreme Council NMJ, Indianapolis, Indi-ana; Bartlett (Memphis), TN. and ExComm, San Antonio, TX. Soon, I’ll be heading to Mid-Atlantic in Savannah and Hawaii in December. A great way to “care” about my responsibilities and “sharing” my time with my Brothers.

My very best wishes to all of you in the upcoming months,

Sincerely and fraternallyRaymond J. Vanden Berghe, Sr.National Commander, Heroes of ‘76EIAR

CARING AND SHARINGMy Brothers have you ever thought of

the two words caring and sharing, being related? These two words actually go to-gether and the cry of those who need the more fortunate to care and share are heard throughout our country if not the world. Soon we will enter the Thanksgiving and Christmas Seasons when many people who have been blessed in receiving mate-rial items are willing to show that they care by sharing their good fortune. Never forget we came into this world without any pos-sessions, and those that God has given us will remain here when he calls us to return from whence we came.

It is said that some people who give only do so to take advantage of a tax deduc-tion , and this may be true or not. The fact remains that there are those who “Care enough to Share” with those who are in

CAMP NEWS

NORTHERN AREA ENCAMPMENT. On July 18, 2015 while encamped along the Delaware River preparing for breakfast, Heroes from Ft Sutter, Golden West and Peter Lassen Camps of Northern California, heard a commotion in the nearby shrubbery. There was such an odor; we thought it might be a skunk. Guards went to investigate and found 2 scraggly, wounded farmers lurking around. Suspecting they might be spies or other ne’ r-do-well (or maybe both), they were hustled off to the Guardhouse. After being notified, the Commander wanted to interrogate the prisoners himself. The ques-tions must have been too hard because the prisoners didn’t get one answer right. After finding out the hard way that not everyone got to ride in the boat, the men’s memory finally began to work; and after a bit more prodding, we discovered these gentlemen were none other than Nic Cruzata and Rus-sell Kennedy of Travis Chapter 490 seeking admission into Golden West Camp. Bros. Cruzata and Kennedy were admitted as members and welcomed by all. Our camp followers performed a very stunning cer-emony, opening their hearts and kitchens to the newest members of their organization. Congratulations to all for a wonderful day.

MIDDLE CENTRAL AREA ENCAMP-MENT. The Area Encampment was held at Saint Columba Episcopal Retreat Memphis, TN. The encampment was opened by Area Rep. Larry Fouse at 1002 with a prayer by Acting Chaplain Richard Van Tassell, fol-lowed by the pledge of allegiance to The Flag in unison. Bro. Larry Fouse introduced National Commander and PGM of New Jersey Ray Vanden Berghe, PNC George Cowan, K. I. Wright, Jerry Hanson and Reg. Rep. H. Thurl Ray. Cdr Sam Perrin con-ferred the Heroes Degree on Larry Wildes of Volunteer. Assisting in the conferral was CoS Jerry Hanson, and Assist, CoS Michael Schaefer. There were 20 Heroes present representing six Tennessee chapters, some by multiple MIP, and one chapter in New

Jersey. Thirteen of the Heroes present were dressed in Field Uniforms and six were in 1776 era uniforms, making a combined total of 19 who wore Tri-corner hats to the encampment. Bro. Richard Van Tassell made a motion to receive Bro. Larry Wildes as the recruit for this camp, Bro. H. Thurl Ray seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Bro. Wildes was inducted as a Hero of ’76 in an impressive ceremony for which he thanked the members for an outstanding experience. Our appreciation is extended to Camp Columba’s excellent staff for hosting our camp and providing Cheese burgers, fries, fruit, and brownies for the noon meal, during which fellowship and comradery was enjoyed by all.

The date for the next camp will be deter-mined and published later.

KING KALAHAUA CAMP (Honolulu #11). Members of our Color Guard that participated in the Hawaii York Rite Grand Commandery’s ceremony honoring the memory of the 9-11 victims on Friday, 11 September 2015 at City Hall.

L-r: Bros. “JJ’’ Brown, PNC and Bill Hol-lingsworth. Bro “JJ” also gave a “Toast to the Flag”.

ALAMO CAMP (Ft Sam Houston #17). A raw recruit by the name of James E. Jensen, was officially made a Hero on 30 September 2015. The members of the camp had reported that there was a somewhat large shadowy figure lurking around the camp area which was very suspicious, but could not determine what it was. They could not determine if it was big foot or a shaggy bear looking for some food. It was determined that the subject was trying to enter the camp. Whoever it was, made many attempts at gaining admission, and we became concerned. Several of the troops, after doing some tracking, finally cornered it and as it turned out it was the named individual above. He was placed in the guardhouse awaiting interrogation. He was shabbily dressed, but did have a good pair of shoes and had been wounded and was using a bamboo stick as a crutch. He barely made it into the camp to be inter-rogated. Due to his current condition, and

before he entered, he was given a plate of beans, a slice of bread and a cup of water. He was then placed before the Commander, who proceeded to examine him to see what his intensions were. He initially could not answer the Commanders questions but after many attempts seemed to compose himself to come up with some of the an-swers. This resulted in him having to cross the Big “D” numerous times and finally, due to the temperature of the water, was able to answer his interrogators. After giving his he-roic deed and questions it required several votes to confirm his heroic deed. Bro Jim is a strong Mason involved in the various Masonic Organization in the San Antonio Texas area. He is deeply involved with his local Masonic Lodge and York Rite Bodies, and a staunch National Sojourners member. He currently serves as the Senior Warden of his Lodge. He will be an important addition.

GENERAL OGLETHORPE CAMP (Clar-ence H. Cohen #162). The Commander having just returned from an arduous journey to Valley Forge to meet with our Commander in Chief, General Washington, called a meeting to discuss the General’s Orders. As soon as the meeting began, we were interrupted by a commotion outside the Sentry Post. When sent to investigate, The OOD reported that a recruit had tried to gain entrance to our camp. CDR Coffey or-dered that the interloper be brought before the Brethren to determine if he was worthy of entrance into our Order. After proper examination, he was presented to the Com-mander, who, being weary from the journey, almost failed to recognize the bedraggled specimen brought before the camp as his own son, Jarrod, who stated he wanted to follow in his Father’s and Grandfather’s foot-steps and join our forces. His relationship notwithstanding, the camp conducted the usual investigation; he was found worthy, after a few trips to the “D” (at least one just

for fun). Bro. Jarrod Coffey was cheerfully admitted, on 23 May 2015. Heroes present included his Father, CDR Brian Coffey, PP and his Grandfather, Bro. Wayne Barnes, PP/PC, Mid-Atlantic Area Rep.

JOHN J. PERSHING CAMP (Pasadena #265). Our commander, Bob Reynolds, is known far and wide as a great warrior. So, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind why President Franklin Pierce gave us the task of rounding up and either capturing or killing the Mexican bandits who have been raiding American settlements in the southwest do-main, then going back across the border for safety in Mexico. Our camp has two scouts, Greg Corey and Marty Mihal, who are very familiar with the badland territory between Old Fort Hood and the border. Additionally, we have two sharpshooters, Nathan Marsak and Bernie Harris, who have a reputation for never missing their targets. In the past our camp has participated in similar missions and has been very successful. Therefore, we are confident that we will accomplish this assignment with little effort.

CARL L. SITTER CAMP (Shenandoah Valley #543). On 22 August 2015, two of our members and two Camp Followers attended the Federal Area Conference & Encampment in Fairfax, VA. The Kena Shrine Temple in Fairfax hosted the Confer-ence. Bro. Charlie Davis and Richard Radi and Camp Followers Wanda Lawson and Irene Mertens enjoyed a very pleasant day of meetings and initiation. A delicious din-ner was provided by the Daughters of the Nile of Kena Shrine. The morning began with opening remarks by the Federal Area Rep Bro. Randy Geck. The Camp Follow-ers held their initiation ceremony in which Camp Followers Wanda and Irene took part. Then it was made an extra-special day for us when Bros. Charlie Davis and Richard Radi were awarded a National Presidential Citation for their work with the chapter. To add to this recognition, Bro. Charlie was also presented with a plaque as Sojourner of the Year for the Federal Area. It was the first time we’ve seen him speechless! Then to add another special surprise, Camp Follower Wanda Lawson was also given a plaque as Comp Follower of the Year for the Federal Area. After dinner the men held their meeting and Heroes initiation while the women were taken to the Fairfax Museum where they had time to browse through the many interesting items and artifacts depict-ing the history of the city of Fairfax. It was a nice day for all and an especially wonderful day for our members.

NATIONAL SECRETARY RAMBLINGS

Thank you to everyone for your support. Secretaries, annual dues season is upon us, don’t hold your member’s dues, send them to us at least once a month. Plan now to attend the Mid-Winter Meeting if you can. I look forward to meeting with you. Nearly everyone got your annual reports and 990Ns in. Those who didn’t know who you are – do it. The Fall mailing has gone out which included Dues Cards, MWM Registration forms, a current Alpha Roster, the Essay Contest form, a Spirit of America Education Foundation dona-tion form, and a copy of the 2015-2016 Staff Directory. Make sure you have all of these items. Check your Alpha Roster for changes and get them to us as soon as possible to avoid our mailing the SOJOURNER to incorrect addresses or to deceased individuals. Start looking now for candidates to attend the Valley Forge Freedom Foundation and the Area Leadership Conferences. Thanks to some great volunteers the exhibits at National Headquarters are really coming along. If you are in the DC area plan to make a stop at our new National Headquarters, we’d love to see you. Sales contribute to our budget and can make a difference in what we can do so check out the Sales Catalog and the link for emblem embroidered clothing on the Web site at the Resale Catalog tab in the Members Only Section. Growth in membership is critical to our continued existence as many of our more senior members no longer can attend meetings so while you are at your Blue Lodge or any other Appendant body meeting talk about National Sojourners, carry a peti-tion or two, invite people to a Sojourner meeting. Every member is on the Membership Committee. With just a little effort we can see meaningful growth in our Order. Set a goal for a number of new members in your Chapter this year and then go out and find them. They are out there just waiting to find out about National Sojourners, let’s tell our story.

MASONIC ACCOLADES

Throughout the year many of our National Sojourners Brethren are awarded various state and national honors and accolades in recognition their Service to the Craft. We hope to include in each SOJOURNER Issue an article recognizing achievements in Ma-sonry by our members. This issue we will be focusing on Sojourner Members who are receiving Scottish Rite 33o or KKCH honors this year. The following is a listing of those National Sojourners that we have received notification of their being so recognized. We assume that not everyone receiving these honors this year is listed here, please forgive the oversight and notify us of your preferment so we can recognize you in our next issue.

JOE CUBED (OR JOE TO THE THIRD POWER)

At first glance it would appear strange that these three Joe’s would have such a close relationship because Joe Zito lives in Alabama, Joe Ryland lives in California, and Joe Cortez lives in Arizona. However, all three Joe’s are active in National Sojourners at the national, area, and chapter levels. Each is an MIP member of Pasadena #265. They are

active in York Rite Masonry at state and local levels. Consequently, each is a Knight York Grand Cross of Honor (KYGCH). They are active Scottish Rite Masons. All three of these Joe’s have beautiful wives: Angie, Katie, and Lei Lani. All three of these ladies are active in the Social Order of the Beauceant (SOOB) at local and national levels. Is there any doubt why all three Joe’s attend the Beauceant Supreme Assembly each year? Well, in 2007 they began to compare their Masonic activi-ties and realized they had a lot in common, in addition to their first names.

RESALE NEWS

These are exciting times for National Sojourner Sales. See the Sales Catalog On-Line or contact us with your questions. Our newest sale item is a high quality National Sojourner Belt Buckle that we have just received. Additionally, you may not have noticed the link to the vendor providing us with Emblem embroidered clothing and bags. If you have not visited this site you are really missing something. As always, we still have our publications, pins and medals, jewelry, and other special items that you just can’t live without. There is a new tie design on the way and we are always seeking your recommendations on what we should add to our inventory. Place your order today!

WHAT’S GOING ON @NSI.ORG

The existing website is being maintained with up to date information as we receive it concerning National and Area/Regional meet-ings, the Sojourner Magazine, Chapter Newsletters, Meeting Reports and updated NRs, etc. Please go to www.nationalsojourners.org and register for access to the Sojourner Only area if you haven’t already. If it’s been awhile since you last logged in and you’ve lost your password, please use the Lost Password link on the Log In page. NOTE: the email with your temporary password will come from [email protected] and may end up in your spam/junk folder, adding this email address to your address book may also help. The transition is making progress, although slower than we had hoped. The Assistant Webmasters are being trained and the Member Management System is being finalized. When these two phases are finished the entire website will have completed the transition. After final testing we will ‘go live’, while you may notice some minor changes in the website’s appearance the structure and content will be the same. Please send you comments, suggestions and content to Dave Alderfer, National Webmaster, [email protected].

SOJOURNER DISTRIBUTION

Currently every other issue being distributed only electronically means nearly 2/3 of our members do not receive the electronic issue of the SOJOURNER. We are looking for ways to be able to publish all 6 issues in hard copy. To lower the cost of each issue to allow for more printed issues would be to decrease the number of copies printed and mailed of each issue. We have a little over 2000 email addresses for the 7700 live members. Less than 300 have actually indicated they would like to receive the SOJOURNER electronically. Now when we send a print edition we produce over 7000 copies. If over 3,000 would WANT to receive the SOJOURNER electronically we could save enough to print all 6 issues for the remaining members who only get print. Receiving the SOJOURNER electronically it is in color rather than the print black and white. Help us better serve all of our members, send us an email saying YES, I would like the SOJOURNER electronically every issue. Then you can read it on your computer or print it out and you can allow your brothers who cannot receive the on line issues to be able to get every issue in print. This is an important concern for the wellbeing of our organiza-tion, please help.
