Principal’s Note

Hello and welcome to my first Principal’s Note for Term 2.

It great to see students and staff quickly re-establish class-

room and school routines as we return from the Easter holi-

days. Like all new beginnings, it is obviously an exciting time

for our school community to be back and wondering what this

term will have to offer. I trust that we will all make the most of

the 11 weeks of schooling which are ahead of us.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy

(NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5,

7 and 9. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar

since 2008. The testing days for 2018 are: Tuesday 15,

Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 May.

NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every

child to progress through school and life, such as reading,

writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are under-

taken nationwide, every year, in the second full week in May.

NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas (or ‘domains’)

of:

Reading

Writing

Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctua-

tion)

Numeracy.

NAPLAN tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are devel-

oped over time through the school curriculum and are not the

only means to measure students’ abilities. These test results

can be used in conjunction with other assessment used at

school to determine a student’s skill level.

The NAPLAN tests are a routine part of the school calendar.

However students may be withdrawn from the testing program

by their parent/carer if there are religious beliefs or philosophi-

cal objections to testing. A formal application by the relevant

Test Administration Authority (TAA) must be received by the

principal prior to the testing. Please make contact with your

child’s teacher should you wish to withdraw your child.

School Uniform

It is always great to see the entire student population attending

school each day wearing our uniform with pride. Well done

students and parents!

ANZAC Day

On Wednesday 25 April, all students and parents are strongly

encouraged to attend. School Student Leaders are ex-

pected to attend.

Students are required to wear full school uniform and to

meet teachers at the Council Chambers at 11:15 for a

11:30 start.

The March will commence at the Council Chambers on Bur-

rows St and conclude at Memorial Park. The Memorial Service

will commence at Surat Memorial Park on Marcus St following

the March.

See you there!

Thanks

Staff, students and parents, thanks for another tremendous

start a new school term.

Remember, “The Surat State School way is to commit to

our learning, strive for excellence and succeed in all that

we do.”

Enjoy the weekend!

Year 3 News

The Year 3 class is off to a great start this term and eve-ryone is excited to be back! We are very keen for the term ahead and look forward to sharing all the exciting things we will be learning. Here is a quick outline of what

the Year 3 class will be focusing on throughout Term 2.

In English, students will be listening to, reading and adapting poems featuring an Australian set-

ting.

In Maths, students will be learning how to recall addition and subtraction facts and apply place val-ue understanding to partition and rearrange num-

bers.

In Science, students will be investigating how heat energy is produced and the behaviour of heat when it transfers from one object or area to anoth-

er.

During the Humanities and Social Sciences unit, the year 3 students will be exploring places near a far and will be identifying the similarities and differ-

ences between the characteristics of these places.

Bring on week 2!
