Dear Friend of Recovery, Rehabilitation and Rights, On behalf of the NYAPRS Conference Committee, Board of Directors and NYAPRS staff, we are very pleased to present this Conference Announcement, with program details and registration form, for the NYAPRS’ 30th Annual Conference Keeping Integrity in Integration.

In keeping with this year’s Conference theme, our program will explore how we can best advance innovations and address issues in assuring that recovery, housing, employment, peer support and rights protections rise to the top in the fast-paced healthcare reform environment in which we live.

Over the course of the 3-day Conference, we will offer over 70 workshops and plenary presentations with a special focus on conference tracks in Administration and Management, Health Homes, BHOs and Managed Care, Advocacy and Empowerment, Community Integration, Cultural Competence, Exemplary or Emerging Practices, Integrated Health & Behavioral Health and Health, Healing & Recovery.

This year’s program will include an expanded Health, Healing & Arts Fair and program to help celebrate National Wellness Week, including a festive Multicultural Exhibition and spirited Cultural Diversity Bash.

This year’s stellar keynote lineup includes Paolo del Vecchio, Acting Director of the Center for Mental Health Services/SAMHSA, Michael Hogan, Commissioner of NYS Office of Mental Health, and noted peer leaders Keris Myrick and Chris Hansen.

Again this year, participants will have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of two Catskills hotels (Hudson Valley Resort & Spa and Honor’s Haven Resort & Spa), with new amenities and ongoing shuttles between the hotels for the convenience of your stay.

In recognition of these difficult financial times, please note that our rates are the same as they have been for the last two years. Please remember that our rates for the conference program are all-inclusive: one price pays for all conference programs, lodging and meals! See the registration form for rates. We offer scholarships to New Yorkers who have not attended the conference in the past. You can download a scholarship form from our website at www.nyaprs.org or call the office (518) 436-0008 and have one mailed or faxed to you.

If you have any questions, please contact us at 518-436-0008 or via email at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you in the Catskills this fall and sharing the tools for transformation that bring the promise of recovery into practice!

Movie and Q & A’s ~ Kings Park: Stories from an American Mental Institution

Hailed by critics as a breakthrough documentary, Kings Park: Stories from an American

Mental Institution offers an inside look at public mental health care in America by

focusing on the story of this now abandoned institution. On June 21, 1967, at the

age of 17, Lucy Winer was committed to the female violent ward of Kings Park State

Hospital following a series of failed suicide attempts. Over 30 years later, now a veteran

documentary filmmaker, Lucy returns to Kings Park for the first time since her discharge.

Her journey back sparks a decade-long effort to face her past and learn the story of the

now abandoned institution that once held her captive. Her meetings with other former

patients, their families, and the hospital staff reveal the painful legacy of our state hospital

system and the crisis left by its demise. For further information about this movie please go
