Not only do we have two cast members from the 1968 production in our current production but also a piece of furniture, the green-gold bench seat … what an amazing history and wealth of talent we have in our theatre family.

It’s not every day that a local theatre group can celebrate 50 years of performance in their own space, and it’s not every day that an organisation repeats a performance to honour this milestone.

On April the 29th 1968 we had our first production on our currently used auditorium stage, this production was, The Miser.

The Miser is a comedy in prose by the French playwright Molière. It was first performed on September 9, 1668, in the theatre of the Palais-Royal in Paris. The play was first produced when Molière's company was under the protection of Louis XIV himself. It was loosely based on a Latin comedy by Plautus, from which many incidents and scraps of dialogue are borrowed. Satire and farce blend in the fast-moving plot, and stunning costumes will be a feature of this period piece

From the Directors … 50 years!!! Can you believe it?!?? DA and I have such great memories of working together on the 2018 production of ‘The Miser’. It’s has been a lovely journey down memory lane and we hope that you enjoy our interpretation. To Ian and Sherry, thank you for re-auditioning! We all hope to see you both back again! There have been many wonderful, dedicated, enthusiastic actors and directors before us and we hope to pave the way for the next generation. We would love to thank our stellar cast and crew, but in particular, Nigel for the set design and organising the Sunday crew, Trevor for the costuming and Tracie for the set decor. For every hour we spend at rehearsal they spend off stage making the magic happen. Of course, all members play a role, Front of House, Advertising, construction, lighting, box office, the list is endless, and without all these people playing their role, we would not be here 50 years later, bringing more life, love and laughter to each of you. It’s what we love. Enjoy. Cheers! Here’s to the next 50!

Harpagon - Graham Lister

Really, I am not a mean person. Not at all. Well maybe sometimes. Um, most times? Alright! Let's just say 90% of the time and leave it at that ok! Wonder why I enjoy playing these roles .... I’m not mean, I’m just cast that way!!

Cleante - Jacob Treloar

I've been a member for a year and a half and this is my sixth show. I love the theatre and how it can transport you in to another world. The play on words and clashing of characters make this a show full of fun little moments.

Valère - Joshua Knight

For my Love, Élise, I will happily play at being a servant to a miser. In order not to short change him I will put as much value as I can into each and every scene. Élise is definitely worth it.

Anselme - Ian Rehbein

Life is full of surprises. I never thought after playing Valère in the 1968 production of The Miser at The Playhouse Theatre, I would be onstage again 50 years later, this time as the much older Anselme.

Master Simon/Jacques - Des Gellert

I blame my sister for it all, after all, I was only at the audition for ‘An Italian Straw Hat’ because I had a driver’s licence and she didn’t. 40+ years later and recently retired, I am feeling revitalised at having been cast in The Miser.

La Flèche - Sophia Burfitt

The privilege to perform alongside cast members of the original Playhouse Theatre's production of ‘The Miser’, is a wonderful opportunity. I am playing the role of a character that is traditionally depicted as a man, what the deuce are they thinking?

Élise - Shanyn Limpus

Although, The Miser may be set way back in 17th Century France, many stock characters used by Moliere and even Shakespeare, still exist on our TV screens today. For example, Mr Burns from the Simpsons is your modern-day Harpagon—the rich, mean old man overcome by greed.

Marianne - Grace Petersen

I am very excited to play the role the beautiful Sherry Barnes took on 50 years ago. I can't wait to work with such a talented cast on my first straight play as a major role.

Frosine - Sherry Barnes

My first stage appearance with Bundaberg Players was as Marianne in The Miser in 1968. It was also the first show presented at The Playhouse Theatre and I’m delighted to be part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations (playing a different role this time!)

The Director’s Note from the 1968 program

Policeman – Kyle Schneider

I feel like I was type-cast in this role... manly, strong, commanding, authoritative, dashing... and you will see none of this from me in this role, otherwise I wouldn’t be acting! But you will see me, acting, as a police officer, in a play, on a stage... I can assure you of that!
