I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first year as Mayor. Having the opportunity to get out and about and meet so many of you has been fantastic.

Our city is in great shape. The wheels of change have been turning and we have made much progress in 2014.

In this issue of Proudly Napier we tell you about a new brand campaign we’ve been working on. Napier Now is about encouraging us all to take another look at our wonderful city. We’ve come a long way. At times the journey has been difficult. Our past has shaped us into a unique city with an Art Deco heart

and we wanted to do something that celebrates what we have achieved. We’ve got great people and thriving businesses in our midst and we thought that was worth acknowledging. We might be considered a ‘small’ city, but we punch above our weight and we think Napier Now embodies that spirit. As part of the campaign, you will find a fun, interactive online advent calendar offering daily surprise deals with local businesses. Find out more over the page.

I love this time of year. I can’t wait to get the BBQ cranking so my wife Shirley and I can enjoy having friends over to make the most of the balmy Hawke’s Bay summer evenings. I know many of you will be doing the same.

New in the City

A little dollop of cuteness is about to be revealed to the public at the National Aquarium of New Zealand.

Dubbed ‘Boo’ by Aquarium staff, the Little Penguin was rescued from Ahuriri aged between five and 10 days old. For the past three months Boo has been fed by keepers. After initially weighing a tiny 98gms, Boo is now piling on the weight thanks to a steady diet of fish up to four times a day and is on track to reach the average adult Little Penguin weight of 1kg.

Many visitors to the Aquarium were surprised to learn that some species of penguin preferred warmer climates over

the icy Antarctica, said keeper Rebekah Cuthbert.

Boo will soon begin to be introduced to the other penguins in the Aquarium’s enclosure. The chick will start taking its first steps towards becoming a part of the Aquarium’s penguin display. It will spend short periods of time in the enclosure until the keepers are sure the birds are used to each other, says Rebekah.

It was important they all got along, she said. “They’ve all got personalities really, just like cats and dogs.”

Your favourite meal to cook... if I’m allowed in the kitchen is chocolate or Russian fudge. My family thinks I’m pretty good at it.

What’s your coffee order?I don’t do coffee, I’d rather have a ‘V’ or a juice.

Favourite holiday destination...Queensland, for the beaches, the climate and the chance to relax and get away from it all with the family.

In the weekend I… coach cricket and tinker with my old cars. My FJ Holden convertible (1955) is running, and my Torana Hatch (1976) will, all going well, be running next year.

One of my goals for the next 12 months is… to continue the door-knocking I did when I campaigned successfully to become a Councillor. I want to try and meet as many people as possible to find out what they think of our city and where they think we should be heading.

‘Boo’ the Little Penguin Image: Kirsten Simcox

Napier’s newest public artwork is a speculator four metre tall sculpture by renowned artist Paul Dibble. The Gold of the Kowhai, situated on the corner of Tennyson Street and Herschell Street, has already been drawing crowds of admirers.

Unveiled by Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Maggie Barry on 5 December, the work, which is illuminated at night, was donated to the Hawke’s Bay Museums Trust collection by the MTG Foundation.

The day after the opening art fans had the opportunity to hear Paul speak about his work at a free floor talk held at MTG Hawke’s Bay, across the road from the sculpture.

Paul has been a bronze sculptor for many years and is wellknown for his large scale works. He lives in Palmerston North with his wife Fran, who is also an artist and a contributor to his impressive collection of work.

MTG Happenings

Perhaps best known as a columnist and commentator, Wellington-based Rosemary McLeod is also an avid collector with a fondness for vintage needlecraft - from tea towels and toys to doilies and dollies.

With Bold Needle & Thread is a new exhibition at MTG Hawke’s Bay and it’s already proving popular, said Deputy Director Marketing Rachel Dossor.

“While it’s taking many on a trip down memory lane, for some of our younger visitors it is the first time they’ve seen such intricate home-made craft. We live in a very different world these days so it’s lovely to remember it was people, rather than machines who created objects once upon a time.”

The exhibition provides a fascinating narrative on collecting as well as how objects were made between 1920 and 1960.

Materials used tell of our own social history and culture. Many of the works are supported with the original patterns and stories behind how Rosemary sourced them.

Rosemary says her collection is not just about objects, it is about women’s hopes, dreams, beliefs and financial realities during decades when life in New Zealand was undeniably tough.

Rosemary began collecting homemade textile projects 30 years ago - to her it seemed that they told an eloquent story of women’s ingenuity and creativity in hard times, a story she knew about from her own family.

Napier Libraries Christmas Opening Hours

New Year’s Eve CelebrationsNapier City Council is thrilled to be sponsoring this year’s family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Sound Shell on Marine Parade.

Featuring legendary Kiwi singer Tina Cross, the evening kicks off at

8.30pm. Napier Mayor Bill Dalton will ring the Veronica Bell just before midnight.

As the clock ticks past midnight, a spectacular fireworks display will light the night sky.

The event is alcohol and smoke-free and police and security will be on hand to ensure the ban is adhered to.

There will be a gold-coin collection during the evening with the proceeds going to IHC.
