Indonesia is the archipelagic country with various tribes and cultures

spanning from Sabang to merauke. Undeniably, the country is dubbed land of a thousand cultures. With its cultural

diversity, be in the authentic Indonesian culture or the culture with foreign influence such as Chinese culture,

Indonesia has various traditions, arts and languages.

The coming of Chinese culture to Indonesia has added to the existing cultures in Indonesia. This has not led

to Indonesian communities isolated to the influence of foreign culture in Indonesia. But in fact, Indonesian communities are very enthusiastic to learn new culture, thus broadening the mind of local communities on foreign culture. Learning a foreign culture does not only take place at training center, course or atelier, but we also get the culture and art learning subjects when enrolling at school.

In commemorating Chinese New Year 2565 on January 31, BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug held the 3-day Chinese New Year celebration from February 5 to 7, 2014 at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug building. The celebration was participated by all students from EY level to senior high school level, and in collaboration with mandarin department. The objective of this Chinese New Year celebration was more than just a festivity to welcome the New Year 2656, but it is also a means of tolerance between cultures, as hosted by BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug.

Various activities were featured at this Chinese New Year celebration. Students exhibited their talents in drama, dance and Chinese New Year traditional dishes. Students, teachers and parents participated in the preparation of this event. Teachers hoped that tolerant attitude and corporation among students could be well built to reach a common goal. (JR)

6 PROUD NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2013

The event was held on February 8th and 9th at the Multifunction Hall of BINUS

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug and had the theme “Growing, Growing, Gone”. The theme is meant to act as a warning for young people to take care of the Earth. The event, attended by over 300 participants from 17 national and international schools, aimed at looking for solutions for problems in their surroundings, such as poverty and protection of endangered species.

The GINDO Conference went a step further than a mere conference; in one session, called ‘the Passion Group’, the participants were divided into several groups, in which they chose a global issue they were interested in and discussed it. In the discussion they needed to come up with solutions to the problems.

“Hopefully, in this GINDO conference, we can help address the global issues with the young generation and remind them that the prosperity and even the preservation of the world are in their hands. The young generation should not be afraid of making changes which bring about benefits to people, no matter how small the action may be,” said Atilla Agussalam, a student of Class 11HR1. (BM)

(ISA) 2014INDONESIAN EDUCATION NEEDS HIGH STANDARD TO TURN yOUNG

GENERATION INTO ASSETS FOR THE NATION. CURRENTLy, THERE ARE MANy SCHOOLS wITH INTERNATIONAL STANDARD DESIGNED TO FULFILL

THE NEEDS OF EDUCATION IN INDONESIA, ONE OF THEM IS BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL SIMPRUG.

Each year BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug to involve their students to participate in the International School Assesments (ISA).

International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) is an annual assessment programme that has been specially developed to measure skills in mathematical literacy, reading and writing of students in international schools. ISA is based on the internationally endorsed reading and mathematical literacy frameworks of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) developed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is designed and developed in Australia by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). The ISA reports provide descriptive information about what students know and can do. The results are equated from year to year so they can be used to track changes over time at individual and school level.

ISA 2014 was held on February 11 and 12, 2014 at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug. The first day of the test covered mathematical literacy and writing task A, while reading and writing task B were on the second day. This test was deemed to be important for BINUS INTERNATIONA SCHOOL Simprug, as passing the ISA 2014 test is what benchmarks the performance of students at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug with other same level schools. The test, which was simultaneously held at other schools, was expected to be a positive routine toward inculcating a sense of competitiveness and striving to be equal with the world standard. (AL)

EDUCATION CAN CREATE A SmART BUT NOT A WISE INDIVIDUAL. WE OFTEN DON’T REALIzE THE ImPORTANCE OF RELIGION AND ITS EFFECT TO OUR LIFE BECAUSE WHAT HAPPENS ARE SOmETImES OUT OF HUmAN’S CONTROL. SOmETHING STRONGER IS CONTROLLING OUR LIFE AND UNIVERSE. THROUGH STUDYING RELIGION, WE UNDERSTAND WHAT’S RIGHT FROm WRONG AND THE PRESENCE OF GOD ALmIGHTY.

B INUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug recognizes the issue and held religious activities for each religion. The

2-day and 3-day camps were held to improve the spiritual experience for each student.

The Christians at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug held a 3-day retreat in Palace Hotel, Cipanas on October 4-6, 2013. Taking the theme of the retreat “Getting Life Back on Track”, the speakers and mentors wanted to implement the Christian way of living in daily life to prevent the participant from straying away from the way of Christ. 178 students participated in this retreat, from 6th to 10th graders and 12 supervisors.

Pastor Kongkin Admodjo and Pastor mark Anderson were the speakers for the retreat while several students from 10th and 11th

Activities

grade were appointed as the committee. They presented something different this time with testimonials from several students who had experienced the kindness of God in their life and sharing them as blessings with the fellow students. Through this retreat, participants are expected to understand more about the Christian way of living and practice it on their daily life.

Different from their Christian counterpart, the Catholic students of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug’s retreat took their theme from Keuskupan Agung Jakarta (KAJ)’s guidance. This year, the retreat was held on Wisma Samadi, Klender, and was attended by 134 participants from 7th to 10th grade. Focusing on the theme of “Lending A Hand with Love”, the speakers are frater (priest candidate) from Seminari Tinggi KAJ which

are Fr. Yohanes Prasetyo B.K, Fr. F.X. Bambang Adi Putranto, and Fr. Pius Novrin Arimurti.

The retreat can successfully happen because of the support of teachers, staffs, and parents such as the women from PSG (Parent Support Group), CAS (Creativity Action Service) students from 11th grade, as well as supervisors from different support groups. Hopefully from this retreat, the participants are able to gain the spirit to serve others and themselves, and grow in love.

meanwhile, the muslim community held Pesantren Kilat with “Be A Good muslim” as its theme. Held on February 14-16, 2014 at SLDC Sentul Selatan, Bogor Jawa Barat, the event featured

mr. Ukim qomarudin m.Pd, the principal of Lab School Kebayoran Baru Junior High School and ESC team (Emotional Spiritual quotion) led by Bapak Ary Ginanjar. Aimed to complement what was received in religion classes, the Pesantren invited the participants to do what were taught as a good muslim. Attended by 154 students from 6th to 9th graders and 9 supervisors from 10th and 11th graders, the event brought them close together. Hopefully through this event, the participants will gained and increase their knowledge and be able to apply them in their daily life.

The Buddhist community in BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug held

its own retreat on February 21-22,

2014 at mercure Hotel, Ancol. The

event, which took “Buddhist is my Way”

as its theme, aimed to teach participants to be

familiar with themselves as well as the teaching

from Buddha. The speakers invited to the event were mrs.

Kartika Swarnacitta and mrs. Luna Bodhi from Ehipassiko

Foundation (Buddhist Foundation). The retreat

encouraged the participants to understand the Buddha teachings

more, apply them to their daily life and be able to live in peace.

Basically, BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug is very supportive

when it comes to positive activities which can help the students to

live better and one step closer to their goal in life. Hopefully what is

gained from these religious camps is useful and practiced within the

school environment and family. (AL)

LOvING AND PRESERvING LOCAL CULTURES ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF ALL

INDONESIANS. IT IS NOT SURPRISING THAT MANY INSTITUTIONS AND ORGANIzATIONS

GET INvOLvED IN INTRODUCING TRADITIONAL ARTS SINCE EARLY AGES, wHICH

IS ALSO A wAY TO PRESERvE THE LOCAL ARTS AND CULTURES.

One educational institution which uses International Baccalaureate [IB] curriculum, BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug, also does

this with traditional dances subject. with the vision “A world-class community of proud and outstanding achievers” committed to providing education based on international curriculum and producing quality graduates who can contribute to the nation and even to the world. One real means of preserving cultures, BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug with its Culturific Class teaches Indonesian traditional cultures. Culturific is one of 52 Elective Classes, sixth grade to eleventh grade students can choose from. Each week students learn and practice traditional dances. They also learn about Indonesian cultures.

On Saturday, March 1, 2014, Culturific Class from BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug got a chance to display their skills. They performed Bajidor Kahot at Edusmart Fair 2014 stage, organized by MCI Management. The event was held at Center Court Mall Puri Indah. Tari Bajidor Kahot is a traditional dance from west Java. It tells about the cheerfulness of young girls. Six students from grade X and grade XI gracefully their vans and their long shawls following the perfect choreography the y practiced for weeks preceding the event. Parents were proudly and enthusiastically watched their children show the fruit of their hard work. And appreciation did not come only from the parents, but those at the mall who also spent time to watch the show were also enthralled. (JR)

Loving the Nation’s Cultures Through Dances

Knowing Real market mechanism through Bazaar

Math subject became the focus of learning because students not only learn how to count, but this

bazaar takes them to the practical field of how they can apply their capabilities in addition, deduction, multiplication and division when they sell their products, receiving the sales money and counting the change. In addition, students are trained to enhance their ability in communicating and interacting with public (teachers, staff and other students visiting the bazaar) on how to offer and sell their products to other people. Prior to holding this bazaar, students took training and guidance, be it from teachers or parents about types of food allowed to be sold in the bazaar.

Positive responses were seen from the parents who supported and directly involved in this bazaar activity. The food on sales included Japanese food, traditional Indonesian food, cakes, donuts, Italian food, western food and varieties of beverages. with their hard work to earn the money, students put the income of the bazaar as their savings. Teachers also hope that such activity can lead to students developing their independent character, self-confidence and ability to be a good communicator. Thus, students can be more enthusiastic in offering and explaining their products to prospective buyers. (JR)
