When I heard that EVANGELION was censored (see our article “Evangelion Controversy” on page

45), I was totally outraged. How this could be possible in our modern world? And all this (we specu-

lated) in the name of religious belief? What about free speech? How could a legal

system go along with this? Well, maybe it did not and the TV station censored the

show itself to avoid offending certain sensibilities. We cannot really know where the

truth lies. I was particularly confused when my friend Miyako read me Hideaki Anno’s

interview in NEWTYPE of June. He avoided the subject of censorship and skillfully

defended his work. His point of view made sense and he made some interesting

comments about the internet fans who excessively criticized the show.

“I think the people who are very much involved with the Net,” Mr. Anno said, “have

very narrow views toward life and the world. They’re always in their rooms

and don’t go out very often to communicate in person. Because of their

information on the Net, they feel they know everything without searching the real truths.” They easily

and anonymously say things that they would never say in person. “Their messages are like graffiti in

a public toilet.” They attack other while they are staying in a safe place. “They don’t have anything

certain to hold on... that’s probably why they watch anime shows. (...) I would like to add and say to

those fans, hey, go out and visit towns. I am 35 now and I am realizing the importance of human

contact little by little...”

(This interview, published in the June issue of NEWTYPE, was

made by Mr. Shinichiro Inouê. He encourages people to send

comments and questions to Anno-san by writing to: Mr.

Hideaki Anno, Monthly NEW- TYPE Magazine, Kado-kawa

Shoten, Tokyo, 162-77, Japan.)

I don’t entirely agree with what Mr. Anno is saying. He seems to

perpetuate the standard caricatural view of the nerd and in-

troverted net surfer. Nevertheless, I must admit that he is touching some sensi-

tive area and he scores some points.

Anyway, you have probably already noticed that this issue has a few more pages than usual (60). It is

also packed with information. It offers the second parts of the EVANGELION and of the “Heroic

Robots of the Seventies” articles, as well as a large overview (with character guide and mecha files)

of all the recent GUNDAM TV and OVA series. The episode guide of those GUNDAM series will be

published in several parts in future issues of the magazine. It also features the last of the Japanese

language seminars and quite a load of news and reviews.

As usual, we tried very hard to give you the best information, to make the magazine interesting and

fun for you to read. I hope you will like it, because sometime producing the magazine is a very long

and discouraging work. Don’t forget to write and give us your comments and sug-

gestions. It is very much appreciated.

Ja ne!

BLACKJACK was made into a live action movie avail-able since April (93 min., ¥6480). After the six OVAs,the story continues with a movie to be released thisfall. The story, with an original script co-written byOsamu Dezaki, is set during Atlanta Olympic Games!

The BLUE SEED story continues with an OVA series.BLUE SEED 2: “Operation Mitama Phase 1” is avail-able since 7-24-96. VHS: KIVA-267/LD: KILA-172, 30min., ¥5,800.

The interesting 1995 live-action movie EKO EKOAZARAK: WIZARD OF DARKNESS has now a sequelthat has been subtitled BIRTH OF THE WIZARD. Thefirst part, produced by Gaga Communications(ZEIRAM), was a very nice occult movie (with a touchof erotism — but no tentacles!) telling the story of aschoolgirl using her occult power to fight evil. If part 2is as good, it should be quite interesting. Very similarto animation like TOKYO BABYLON or SILENT MOBIUS.

Yoshiyuki Tomino is back. He is directing and scriptingGâzei no Yoku (Wings of Gâzei) based on his own novel(probably, “Wings of Lin”, the original, mechaless, concept behind AURA BATTLER DUNBINE — mechawere added later at the urge of Bandai). It is set in thesame modern fantasy universe than DUNBINE, but with-out any mecha. Design by Kenichi Ohnuki and sound-track by Shiro Sagisu. To be released in September.

Studio Ghibli has released a complete LD box set oftheir work... It includes five Miyazaki movies(NAUSICAA, LAPUTA, TOTORO, KIKI, PORCO ROSSO),three Takahata movies (GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES,OMOHIDE PORO PORO (“Only Yesterday”),POMPOKO), the Tomomi Mochizuki made-for-TV UMIGA KIKOERU (“I Can Hear the Sea”), Yoshifumi Kondô’sMIMI O SUMASEBA, the “making of” OMOHIDE POROPORO, some clips made by Miyazaki for NTV (includ-ing the 6 min. clip “On Your Mark”). TKLO-50180, CLV,13 LDs (over 1,000 min.!), ¥120,000, avail. on 8-1-96.

Keita Amamiya, creator of ZEIRAM, has contributed toanother live-action movie, JUSKISS. Coincidentaly, theyoung heroine, Justy, is quite similar to Iria. She isplayed by Yûko Anai, a young idol singer. VHS: VPVT-

63845, 77 min. LD: VPLT-70602, 85 min., ¥5,800, avail.on 7-1-96.

LANDLOCK is a new OVA in two parts designed by...Masamune Shirow! LD: AML-0024, CLV, ¥8,034. VHS:AMV-0132, ¥7,800. Both 50 min. and avail. on 6-21-96. It is based not on a manga, but on a Saturn videogame.

LEGEND OF CRYSTANIA is out on video at last. It isscripted by Ryo Mizuno which explains the similaritieswith LODOSS. VCKF-00035, 86 min., ¥5,800, avail.since 5-21-96. They announced an OVA for this fall.

MAHOTSUKAI TAI is a six-OVA series directed byJunichi Satô and designed Ikuko Itô (SAILOR MOONS). It is more or less a remake of MAHOTSUKAI SALLY(Sally The Magician, aka Mini-Fée in French).

Several manga just ended recently: RANMA 1/2 withits #38, RAYEARTH with its Part 2 #3, and TOKYOBABYLON with its #7. Other manga are quite far in theirseries: JOJO’S BIZARRE ADVENTURE reached #47,USHIO & TORA #29 and CHINMOKU NO KAITAI (SI-LENT SERVICE — recently adapted into animation)reached #31.

SAILOR MOON “Song Collection”, available since 5-21-96, offers the best songs of the series. “Extra Ver-sion”, avail. on 8-21-96, will offers several BGM neverreleased before.

SANCTUARY, the famous manga by Sho Fumimura andRyoichi Ikegami, has been at last made into an OVA.Directed by Takashi Watanabe. LD: VPLV-70594, 70min., CLV, ¥5,800, avail. on 4-25-96. VHS: SA4699S,66 min., ¥4,800, avail. on 5-1-96.

SHAMANIC PRINCESS is a cool OVA mini-series in twoparts. Design by Atsuko Ishida (RAYEARTH). Vol. 1 isalready available: BES-1347, 30 min., ¥5,800.

SLAYERS will be rather omnipresent this year with anew TV series, SLAYERS NEXT, a new movie, SLAY-ERS RETURN, and three new OVAs of 30 min. each!

Tôei is releasing in two LD volumes the credits se-quences from all their old animation. Vol. 1 (120 min.)includes the 1963-1975 TV series and vol. 2 1976-1982.
