Introduction

There’s nothing worse than coming home from vacation to find that your house has been burglarized. Now, not only do you likely have a mess on your hands, and a possible claim on your homeowner’s insurance, you’re also missing beloved items.

Before you travel, it’s important to take measures to protect your home from burglary. In this presentation, we’ll look at ways to do just that.

Think Like a Burglar

In order to protect your home from burglary, you first have to think like a crook. Stand in front of your house and try to see what a burglar would see.

– Is your garbage full of packages that hint to expensive items in your home?

– Is your garage securely locked?– Do your bushes and shrubs offer perfect hiding places? – Are your windows open or do they appear easy to penetrate?

Secure Your Home

Once you’ve evaluated your home for security risks, secure your home.

– Make sure your windows are securely locked. – Close all blinds, so a potential thief cannot see inside.– Remove all garbage that indicates any high-dollar

items that may be in the home.– Set a timer so your lights come on in the evenings.– Consider installing a motion-sensitive light near

your driveway or garage.

Ask for HelpConsider asking a friend or neighbor to check on your house while you’re away. Just make sure that you:

– Never leave a note for someone on your door.– Never leave your key in a planter or “fake rock” outside of your

home.

Have Your Mail Stopped

If you don’t have a friend come by to check on your house and bring in your mail, make sure you have your mail stopped and your deliveries held. When mail and packages pile up, it sends a signal to burglars that you’re out of town.
