General overviewIn a local branch, for instance, the primary goal of a general overview camera installation may be to watch for the presence of people and view their movements — not the identification of individuals. For this kind of application, sufficient resolution and coverage of a scene may be achieved with either a number of non-megapixel network cameras or a single HDTV or mega-pixel network camera.

High level of detailIn other situations, you need to be able to identify per-sons or objects in a scene. This could be at the en-trance, or at a teller counter where it is necessary to clearly see every interaction between a customer and the teller. Using an HDTV or a megapixel network cam-era will provide higher resolution images with more details than a non-megapixel network camera.

Benefit from HDTV qualityHDTV constitutes a tremendous leap forward in image quality by providing up to five times higher resolution than standard analog TV. This means sharper images, better color fidelity and a wide screen format, i.e. 16:9 ratio. With Axis, you can get the same high image quality in your surveillance system.

HDTV network cameras can cover larger scenes than analog cameras at a given number of pixels per area. For example, if four analog cameras provide a good coverage of your monitored scene, an HDTV network camera will cover an even larger area, with no loss of image resolution.

What is a video encoder?A video encoder digitizes analog video signals and sends digital images directly over an IP network, such as a LAN, intranet or Internet. It enables users to view live images using a web browser or a video management software on any local or remote computer on a network.

How your analog CCTV system can benefit from video encoders1. Alarm managementA video encoder features digital inputs and outputs (I/O). Inputs can generate the transmission of images upon alarm and outputs can trigger other security devices (closing doors, turning lights on, etc.)

2. Audio integrationIn a banking environment, audio information can be crucial to fully understand an event and react accord-ingly. In a network video system, a network camera or a video encoder with audio support processes the audio and sends both audio and video over the same network cable for monitoring and/or recording. This eliminates the need for extra cabling, and makes audio and video synchronization much easier.

3. Extended possibilities By combining an analog CCTV system with a network video system, you can easily and cost-effectively ex-pand the surveillance system.
