Most women would easily

identify with breast cancer,

for it is a common form of

cancer for this sex to suffer

from. With men, the cancer

under discussion is probably

the one that is most likely

accepted as being especially

personal of the illnesses

that can disable a man. It’s

funny how mankind reasons

at times, but when it comes

to the reproductive side of

things going awry a lot of

emotion is engendered.

Although women have

become more relaxed at

discussing this type of

incapacity with health

professionals, males feel

very different. However

this attitude is being broken

down with campaigns such

as Movember Month, and it

is slowly dawning on the

masculine part of our

community that perhaps it

is a good idea to have more

focus on this particular

disease. The purpose of this

article is to highlight what

part this small gland plays

in the overall health of a

man; what can go wrong

with this gland and why;

and finally to emphasise the

wonderful possibilities that

can exist by the usage of

some individual herbs or

the combination of such

that end up as formulas

which have interesting

names.

Why does this gland

exist in the first

place?

The location of the gland

gives us an immediate

insight as to why it exists,

however it’s a lot harder to

explain how and why it

works. From the picture

immediately above, it can

be seen that this important

gland is right beside the

urinary bladder and very

close to the rectum and

penis. This of course means

it is associated with parts of

the body connected with the

removal of wastes and

toxins, and keep this point

in mind for it relates to what

can go wrong with this

small gland. Although small

diabetes were presented at the

2010 meeting of the

Endocrine Society. In the

first, researchers from John

Hopkins University School of

Medicine reviewed medical

information on 124 adults

between the ages of 36 — 89

who had been treated for type

2 diabetes at a special

endocrine outpatient facility

between 2003 and 2008.

They found that more than

90% of the patients had low

enough blood levels of

vitamin D to be classified as

either insufficient or

deficient. The researchers

noted that only 6% of the

study participants were taking

a vitamin D supplement when

they visited the clinic. They

also found the patients with

the lowest levels of vitamin D

also had the highest levels of

blood sugar.

In a review published in the

journal Nutrition Reviews,

covers 24 controlled clinical

trials involving about 3,000

kids and spans the years from

the 1920’s to the 1980’s.

Studies of kids in many

countries link vitamin D

intake to a whopping 50%

reduction in cavities.

Time magazine of December

5th 2012 reports that men

with erectile dysfunction may

have gum disease. According

to a study in The Journal of

Sexual Medicine, men with

this problem are 3 times more

likely to have gum disease

then men who don’t have ED.

Turkish researchers found

53% of the male patients with

ED had severe gum disease

(chronic periodontitis)

compared to 23% who did

not have ED. The study

included 80 male patients

with ED and 82 without.

None of the patients smoked.

Auckland University of

Technology’s Professor of

Nutrition Dr Elaine Rush

has been studying the effects

of caffeine on the human

body and she is terrified of

what may be happening to the

health of N.Zer’s. Every body

reacts differently to caffeine,

Dr Rush explains. It is

dependent on genes, body

type, ethnicity, age and the

list goes on. “Caffeine is a

drug. It’s not a nutrient and

it’s not a normal part of our

diet. It doesn’t provide any

nourishment.” she said.

Consumption of energy

drinks has skyrocketed in NZ

& Australia rising from 34.5

million litres in 2001 to 155.6

million litres in 2010.

According to most sources the

average amount of caffeine in a

double shot of espresso is 77

milligrams compared to the

average 80mg in a 250ml can of

energy drink.

Prosternere = throw down)

secretes a milky substance

which contains citric acid,

various enzymes and acid

phosphate. The reason and

purpose of the last mentioned

acid and what it’s intended

for and why the prostate

secretes a tarty substance is

presently unknown. The

milky substance makes up to

30—35% of the sperm

produced by the male and

assists with the ability of such

sperm to move about

efficiently. So we have now

ascertained the overall

purpose of the prostate gland,

and that is to assist in the

reproductive process as a man

desires to perpetuate his

It is usual for a man therefore

to want to keep his

replicating equipment in good

working order, despite not

knowing much about how to

do so. Which brings us nicely

to the next point, what are

some of the things that can go

wrong in this part of a

healthy male?

What are some of the

conditions that indicate

a problem exists with

this small gland? And

how do they develop?

Itis always means inflamma-

tion and is added on the end

of many health conditions. i.e

arthritis. So it is evident that

prostatitis is describing a

prostate gland that is

inflamed. But why does this

happen, and how does a

bloke know that he has this

problem in the first place?

Well there are 4 kinds of this

type of instability in a

prostate gland, with one of

it does grow to the size of a

golf ball when a man reaches

the age of 30 and remains so

until approximately 45. From

thereon in it can enlarge and

it is believed about 50% of

men over 50 have a problem

with this condition to a

greater or less extent. When a

male is born his prostate is

very small and grows very

slowly until the roaring

teenage years where it takes

off and increases in size

dramatically. And from that

we can deduce the purpose of

this gland and what it is able

to achieve for a man with a

healthy interest in the

opposite sex. This gland

(which is named prostate

from the Greek word

prostates = one that stands

before—this is contrast with

the word prostrate which

originates with the Latin

these known as chronic non-

bacterial prostatitis or male

chronic pelvic pain syndrome

and comprises about 95% of

prostatitis diagnoses. This

therefore means that the other

3 conditions affect only a

small part of the population,

and they are mainly treated

by administering antibiotics.

The symptoms of these

conditions are demonstrated

by pain in the lower regions,

frequently accompanied by

painful burning urination,

high body temperature, chills,

nausea and a constant desire

to pass urine with an urgency

to do so becoming

increasingly evident.

Sometimes this becomes

difficult due to being unable

to pass urine and that should

ring alarm bells for a

distressed individual. What

has happened is that the

Time magazine 19/8/2013

reports the following: 1 in 8

poor U.S. pre-schoolers who

are obese, despite a CDC

report showing a decline in

19 states from 2008 to 2011.

The Life Extension

Foundation has conducted

extensive research into the

anti cancer properties of

turmeric and found the spice

targets an astounding 10

causative factors involved in

cancer development,

including DNA damage,

chronic inflammation, and

disruption of cell signalling

pathways. Countless

hundreds of published

studies, it turns out, have

shown that curcumin is a

potent anti cancer food that

blocks cancer development in

a number of unique ways.

Two studies into the link

between vitamin D and

prostate gland has become

swollen and very tender.

Interestingly it was one time

thought that sexual activity

was the cause of this type of

disease, however this is now

largely discounted with

bacterial infection, auto

immune response or physical

injury thought to be the main

culprits. However that is still

considered to be only a

partial answer to this delicate

health issue and further

research continues to be

conducted. Another cause of

enlargement of this small

gland in the male body is

hormonal changes associated

with the aging process. Male

hormones known as

androgens along with lower

levels of testosterone

decrease with the passing of

time, and this process is

similar to that of a women

who stops producing eggs

and enters her menopausal

years where her monthly

cycle eventually ceases to

occur. This condition where

the cause of enlargement of

the prostate is due to the

previously mentioned reasons

is described as benign

prostatic hyperplasia or BPH

for short. This is not prostate

cancer and you will have

noticed that we have

emphasised the word benign.

However it is extremely

common in men and has

similarities to those who have

cancer of this vital gland in

the reproductive system. That

sometimes sends a chill

factor into some who display

these particular symptoms

such as slow urine flow or

frequent visits to the toilet to

relieve oneself. Therefore the

importance of having a

physician perform a series of

tests and a close examination

and functioning of this well

known gland is strongly

recommended to enable a

concise diagnosis to be made.

We’ve now arrived at the

most critical part of health

conditions to do with the

prostate, and that is cancer.

Why does cancer occur

so frequently with this

part of a man’s

anatomy?

In New Zealand

approximately 3,000 men are

diagnosed with this condition

each year. This is a lower

level than the BPH that has

similarities to cancer of the

prostate. It is on the increase

however and is now the 3rd

most common cause of death

from cancer in our beautiful

country. The difficulty of this

disease is that the diagnosis

is not made until the

symptoms are quite strong,

and men are well known for

being slow to respond to such

developments which of

course serves the cause of

cancer very well. And that is

one of the reasons why

cancer is so sneaky - it hides

itself cunningly with the

deeply imbedded prostate

gland being an optimal place

to locate itself. In fact it is so

good at disguising itself that

many men who have had

autopsies performed after

their death as 80 year olds or

more, it was discovered they

had the disease and nobody

knew — including their

doctor! It’s slow progression

as a disease is the main

reason for individuals and

health professionals to be

fooled into thinking

everything is alright. So let

us explore this matter a little

further by seeing how the

problem first establishes

itself in this small gland.

And it all begins with an

imbalance of hormones and

toxic overload which set up a

cascading effect of

deterioration on the

efficiency of this critical part

of a man’s anatomy. For as

previously mentioned it is the

close proximity to the

removal of waste within the

body that is mainly impacted

upon by an enlarged prostate.

Urine flow becomes inhibited

and that is due to the

narrowing of the urethra tube

through which both semen

and urine passes along. This

basically causes the body to

slowly become more toxic

and acidic, two conditions

that cancer thrives upon. It

can eventually worsen to the

point that urine is retained in

the bladder and this results in

the desire to urinate more

frequently. This can become

progressively problematical

for waste build up is

occurring, and that is one

reason why cancer enters the

scene. Cell structure becomes

mutated as the individual is

attempting to cope with a

heavier toxic load. Some of

these issues are present from

other parts of the body,

however as the efficiency of

the cleansing breaks down,

they become degraded in

their ability to operate. Think

of it as a slow burning fire in

a building. As the smoke

begins to accumulate and

choke the people inside the

building, the safety officer is

overcome by the fumes

himself and therefore in no

position to order the windows

open in order for the smoke

to escape. The people inside

have no authority to act, so

they begin to run around in

circles accomplishing very

little except raising the panic

levels of everybody. This is

the equivalent of the body

sending out signals that

things are not correct, but is

unable to do much about it

except do its best to alert the

owner a difficulty exists.

Eventually something gives

as the old saying goes and

some action is performed

which is designed to improve

matters. This usually takes

place when a health

professional begins an

investigation which usually

involves a physical

examination, (hence the

finger in the right place) or

blood tests which in most

cases serves to provide

greater accuracy. (this

however can sometimes

throw up false positives)

Despite our clear explanation

of what happens to contribute

to cancer of the prostate, it

has still not been fully

identified as to why this

particular organ of the body.

This business believes that

the clue lies in the fact that

most men contract this

disease over the age of 50.

This is therefore similar to a

women undergoing many

changes in her reproductive

system from about the same

age group. Hormonal

changes play a big part in

women gaining weight and

not only that but also

changing shape, along with

many other identifying

symptoms. So we postulate

that having played such an

important part of being a man

(ability to father children)

that this significant gland is

always going to be the one

that suffers most whenever

the aging process kicks in.

The mystery as to how sperm

gets manufactured and the

process of getting it outside

of the body (delightful that

this may be) serves to

demonstrate overall how

healthy a man is. In fact

sperm motility is an

important factor in being able

to assist women to conceive.

This part that makes up the

composition of the man gets

a lot of work, and it reminds

us of the breasts of a women

that frequently fall foul of

this disease, known as the big

C. As with any segment of

machinery, a critical but

small part that breaks down

usually creates a problem far

greater than one can imagine.

It reminds us of a story that

was told to us many years

ago about a British

motorbike. When a small part

that costs something like

sixpence broke down on the

innards of the machine, it

cost a huge amount in

manpower and time to repair

the errant part. The sorry

owner was frequently billed

hundreds of pounds much to

his amazement!

What can be

recommended as the

best products to cope

with Prostate Cancer?

We must now bring this

discussion to a conclusion by

featuring positive ways in

which this serious disease

can be combated. The

abundant number of products

that can be used are

encouraging, but also other

factors come into play such

as diet and lifestyle habits.

Let us first consider some

recommendations using

single herbs to reduce

prostate enlargement and

inflammation.

# 0263 Echinacea Purpurea

An extremely popular herb

because of how it strengthens

the immune system, and one

way that it does this is to

clear the lymph nodes of

debris. It inhibits enzymes

produced by bacteria to break

down compounds that bind

cells together.

# 0915 Herbal Pumpkin

Pumpkin seeds are a rich

source of zinc and are helpful

for and is considered

particularly good for the

enlargement that is very

common for this gland. Also

good for removing parasites

in the body.

# 0665 Korean Ginseng.

Being a general tonic for the

whole body of course will

benefit the problems

associated with this small

gland. Helps strengthen

people who are cold, pale and

weak and can serve as a daily

tonic for strengthening the

sexual hormones which play

a part in prostate difficulties

for men who are over age 50.

# 0630 Red Raspberry.

A herb rich in manganese

which is an essential element

for oxygenation of the cells.

Although this herb is

primarily used for

womenfolk (especially good

for childbirth) it can also act

as a tonic for the male

reproductive system as well.

#0630 Saw Palmetto.

Oodles of information for

this single herb in connection

with men having problems

with their prostate. It’s an old

American tonic dating back

to the Maya Indians or even

further. The berries have

been traditionally used to

treat several related disorders

of the genito urinary system,

including inflammation,

rupture and blockage. The

educated guess as to how it

helps out with BHP is that

testosterone levels are

prevented from being

converted into the damaging

dihydrotestosterone for the

prostate. It definitely helps

to reduce inflammation and

pain and has the approval of

many in the natural therapy

field as the number 1 product

for prostate issues.

Although the single herbs do

an excellent job for our

discussed problems, by

combining herbs and putting

them into a formulation you

can sometimes get an even

better response. The

following quartet are highly

regarded and have proven to

be popular.

# 0834 Cranberry & Buchu

Cranberry makes the lining

of the urinary tract

inhospitable for bacteria.

(one of the components that

contribute to prostate

difficulties) It also stops

smelly urine in incontinent

people. Buchu is a powerful

diuretic and improves

digestion and also helps with

diabetes.

# 3112 Men’s Formula

This product is designed to

improve kidney and prostate

function in males. It has a

protective effect against

prostate cancer and helps

reduce swelling. It can also

help with impotency.

# 1100 X– A for Men

A combination of herbs that

enhances male energy,

activity and vitality. These

herbs also support the male

reproductive organs

including prostate function.

The formula also increases

blood flow to the pelvic

region, and may also assist

with impotence or lack of

desire in men. Although this

is a good product it is on the

discontinued list, however a

plentiful supply is still

available in New Zealand.

# 0259 Epilobium Vege Caps

This in our opinion is the

best product to take for the

greatly discussed health

issue. There has been many

of our customers who have

had wonderful results, and in

the words of one of them “I

can now pee straight!” You

will find more about this

product by considering the

page 6 Product of the Month.

We now bring our article to a

close, and we hope the

women folk have read it with

interest. We encourage you

to discuss this with your

husbands, partners, fathers,

brothers, workmates, friends

and anybody who you

believe needs this

information. As you can

observe this is for our

country a big health issue,

with large numbers

contracting this disease each

year. In our country in 2009

16.1% of those who

registered they had this

disease notified that it

involved the prostate. That

translates into 3,360 which if

we divide by 52 equals 64.63

males per week! For those

who have suffered the

ultimate demise from this

dreadful disease it goes like

this: Lung Cancer 18.09% of

all deaths from cancer;

Colorectal cancer was the

next most common cause of

death from cancer, followed

by breast and prostate

cancers. So from all of this it

can be described that prostate

cancer is one of the biggest

cause of death from cancer in

New Zealand. Add into this

mix those who suffer from

problems to do with this

gland but it doesn’t turn into

cancer, and it can be seen

why this subject needs airing.

The following experience

may serve to demonstrate

what is possible, and

although it involves a female,

it serves to show how herbal

treatment can influence

reproductive systems.

“My Life is now

balanced again.” Patricia began experiencing numerous

female problems at the age of 18.

She went from doctor to doctor and was given antibiotics, over the

counter medications or a prescription

drug, which for some reason never seemed to work for very long. This

went on for about 8 years. By age 26

her monthly cycles were so debilitating that she spent much of

one week out of every month in bed

with severe pain. When she moved

(house) … was referred to a concerned gynaecologist in

Birmingham. After a pelvic exam and

other testing, he diagnosed her with what he said was the second most

severe case of endometriosis he had

ever seen. After two or three laparoscopies, her problem persisted

due to major scar tissue and

adhesions. Finally she woke up one day with almost unbearable

abdominal pains. Her husband called

the doctor who said to get her immediately to his office. She wound

up back in hospital where she

underwent major surgery for a near total bowel obstruction that the doctor

told her could require a colostomy.

She said, “Thank the Lord, I didn’t

need the colostomy, but a total hysterectomy was necessary at that

time.” After the hysterectomy, she

was placed on an oestrogen supplement called Premarin. The side

effects she experienced for the next

3 years were not far from being as bad as the symptoms of her original

disease. She developed panic attacks,

hot flashes and chronic headaches, which were things she had never had

been plagued with before. The

emotional changes she was experiencing were becoming

unbearable. She was getting so bent

out of shape over everything that her

husband did or said that he dreaded coming home from work every

evening. One day while she was at a

neighbour’s house, she was given an article on black cohosh and the

benefits it had to help produce a

natural female oestrogen and help with female problems. She realised

she had to do something, so she went

to an iridologist and nutritional counsellor who examined her eyes

and began exposing areas of my

health that she had no way of knowing anything about. Patricia

started on a regime of black cohosh, a

herbal combination, and other herbs that she is now taking which have

become the mainstay of her health.

She has no more hot flashes,

headaches or panic attacks. She says, “My life is now balanced again and I

haven’t taken oestrogen or any other

pharmaceutical medication for over a year.” She now has a herb shop

where many people come searching

just like she once searched and found. Provided from Louise Tenney’s book

Ron Taylor is a remarkable man — despite a life

threatening condition he

continues to carry on with his daily life almost as though

nothing is out of the ordinary.

Ron Taylor is an Auckland, New Zealand based journalist

with more than 40 years

experience in the media including radio, television and

newspapers. In that time he

has covered most of the news

events and topics any good journalist could cover, from

the Mount Erebus plane crash

and the sinking of the Wahine, to crime and

emotional human interest

stories. One of these stories concerns Ron himself. After

almost 3 years in China, Ron

returned to New Zealand in late 1995 only to find himself

the subject of a dramatic set

of personal circumstances. As a result of his experience he

wrote a book The Prostate

Problem - What every New

Zealand Man should know.

Having been out of the

country for some time he decided it would be prudent

to visit his doctor to arrange

a physical check up. In the book ’s foreword, Ron ’s

physician, Dr John Betteridge

M.B., Ch B. tells the story: “Ron came to see me at my

surgery about a routine

health matter after his return from China. He was looking at

employment options and, in

conversation, I suggested that he might consider writing

an article on the increasing

prostate problem. I was

concerned that, unlike our female patients, middle aged

men were not having regular

health checks or responding to symptoms at an early age.

Ron was lukewarm to the idea

at the time, so I was delighted when I saw his

feature article in the New

Zealand Herald some months later. Then came the

bombshell. Ron came to see

me with symptoms referable to the prostate. After

appropriate investigation

things did not look good and

he was referred for specialist advice and treatment.”

To be told that you have

cancer in whatever form is

undoubtedly a traumatic experience. I asked Ron about

his initial reaction on learning

the news. “I was taken aback,

stunned… I was floored! Here I was on this nice, sunny

afternoon asking myself ‘why

me’? I began to think about my lifestyle - trying to put

two and two together to

establish whether I had been doing the wrong things but

nothing seemed to gel. I had

led an active life with plenty of exercise — regular sessions

at the gym, walking,

tramping, sailing, tennis— things along those lines. I

was mystified as to why I

should have been singled out for a dose of prostate cancer.

I took a walk around the

block to try to regain my

composure. By the time I reached the surgery again my

doctor had contacted the

urologist and the oncologist—within 3 days we were onto

it.”

I asked him about his eating

habits prior to the discovery

of the condition. “I used to eat meat. Looking back I

realise that I ate a lot of

meat—probably no more than the average N.Z. bloke, but I

now know that’s a fair

amount! Probably too much

for the average system to take without having some

detrimental effect. I didn’t

any diary products before the prostate problem, but I did

like lamb. Not now though …

it’s too fatty. I now eat grain breads, no butter and my diet

includes a reasonable amount

of pasta. But there seemed to be really identifiable pattern

to why I had contracted

cancer of the prostate. I wonder what shocks you more

than being told ‘you ’ve got

cancer’ when you think you ’re as fit as a buck rat?”

Ron says that having gone

through all the usual negative

questions in his mind such as why me?', and how could it be

possible, his next reaction

was a more positive ‘O.K., what can we do about this?'

He says, "I was lucky. The

cancer was in the early stages and localised. We'd managed

to pick it up early in its

development - purely by chance, really. It hadn't

spread into the nearby tissue

and lymph nodes. It brought home to me the realisation

that the publicity surrounding

the need for men to have

regular checks around middle age was definitely necessary.

I found that I had a great

chance of being cured by

either surgery or radiotherapy - I chose the latter. Currently

my PSA reading (prostate

specific antigen a test which

measures a chemical produced only in the prostate)

after radiation therapy is near

zero. A year on from treatment I'm in remission

and confident that at least my

prostate won't get me!

Ron's book, The Prostate

Problem, was written to share important information that all

men and women alike should

know. Ron Taylor tells, in succinct terms, precisely what

the problems with prostate

are. He explains how to recognise the symptoms;

screening and tests;

conventional treatment

choices; the recovery processes; the effects on

one's sex life, together with

how to manage a sensible diet-what you eat is important.

Unfortunately, The Prostate

Problem neglects to detail the various naturopathic or

holistic treatment options as

Ron was unaware of these at the time of writing the book.

However, his intimate

experience and particularly his diet suggestions are well

worth sharing I asked: If you

could give a piece of advice to

the average New Zealand male concerning prostate,

what would it be? "Well, first

I’d say eat the right things'. That's always a bone of

contention, of course - what's

right for one isn't always the best for another. But in

general terms stay away from

large quantities of red meat and too much dairy food. In

fact, avoid a surfeit of any

one type of food intake. Balance in a diet is probably

the answer to staying healthy

longer. Next, I ’d strongly advise regular health checks.

Regardless of the fact that

you feel perfectly fine and

you have no noticeable symptoms, arrange a visit to

your medical advisor and get

a check done. That simple act could save your life.” It

seems though that getting a

top to toe health check is the easy part. International

research shows that for

positive treatment to be effective, the time lapse from

diagnosis to the start of

treatment should be no longer than 4 weeks. The true cause

(or causes) of prostate cancer

appear to be unknown at this

time, although some evidence points toward a high-energy

diet and high fat consump-

tion. Considering the amount

of meat eaten in both New Zealand and Australia (where

the incidence of prostate

cancer is also high), this may

come as no surprise. Studies show that whereas Asian men

have a low incidence of

prostate cancer in their own countries, within a couple of

decades of moving to a

western country, they show a rise in prostate cancer. As

Ron comments in his book, it

is also possible that the rise in reported prostate problems

is partly due to better

diagnosis and more attention being paid to a disease which

affects older men who are

living longer. Regardless of this, it is a fact that the

higher incidence of the

condition still outstrips the

new diagnostic techniques.

Ron says, "How diet

stimulates prostate and other cancers is under intense study

and it will take many years to

come to any conclusions, but it is known that cruciferous

vegetables- cabbage, broccoli,

cauliflower and brussel sprouts - do have anti-cancer

effects, as do tomato-based

products which contain an anti-oxidant called lycopene."

Research at Harvard

University in the United

States has shown that men who eat at least 10 servings a

week of tomato -based foods

are up to 45% less likely to

develop prostate cancer. Those who have an intake of 4 to 7 servings weekly show a

20% reduction. These foods

include pizza, spaghetti sauce and other foods with a rich

tomato base. On the other

hand, don’t do what a male cousin of mine used to do

when he was a kid—spread

butter thickly on a slice of bread and then top it off with

a very generous serving of

tomato sauce! It would appear that the common

sense approach to avoiding

cancer of any description is to

eat in moderation. Keep your meat consumption down and

include more fish, vegetables,

nuts, lentils or dried beans in your daily diet, balanced with

some exercise. Although not a

guarantee of a cancer free life, these acquired habits will

undoubtedly go a long way to

building resistance and reducing the odds.

Epilobium also known as "small flowered willow-herb"

(Epilobium parviflorum) is considered one of the most important medicinal

herbs for men. As a healing herb, it was neglected and so carelessly crushed

under foot for centuries. It had all but disappeared, not only from the fields of

the world, but also from text books which detailed properties of healing plants.

Epilobium parviflorum is a small obscure herb (all parts of the plant are used,

including the bark, the root, the flowers and the leaves) which causes absolutely

no side effects and is the most effective and yet completely harmless herbal

medicine for disorders of the prostate. It is attributed to be a cooling, astringent

herb that is useful for inflammation and problems with the urinary tract.

Enlargement of the prostate is considered one of the most common disorders

occurring in men over 50 years of age. If left untreated, continued enlargement

of the prostate eventually obstructs the bladder completely and emergency

measures become necessary.

The real value of this herb lies in the fact that many men are spared surgery altogether after using

Epilobium. If an operation has been performed, Epilobium relieves the burning and other complaints which

often follow afterwards. Clinical studies have revealed that Epilobium has an inflammation inhibiting, and

healing effect on acute and chronic inflammation of the prostate. With a relatively short period of time, the

annoying symptoms are reduced by shrinking the gland to its normal size.

As a preventative agent, every man over 50 years of age should take it daily. As a supportive agent, it can

be used with any other form of prostate treatment, including surgery. Epilobium is often combined with

saw palmetto for prostate treatments, including inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis.) It has also been

shown helpful for gastrointestinal disorders, kidney and bladder disorders, rectal bleeding, menstrual

disorders, cystitis, urinary infections, diarrhoeas, mouth lesions and irritable bowel syndrome. Epilobium is

also often an ingredient in many commercial skin products.

Anti-inflammatory Effects

Scientific literature confirms the actions of Epilobium. In 1991, an article in

Plant Medicine confirmed its anti-inflammatory effect, and noted it to be ten

times more effective than the drug indomethacin. Scientists have isolated

compounds known as monotheism from the Epilobium species which have

shown them to inhibit the enzymes aromatase and 5-alpha-reductase, both of

which are involved in prostate enlargement.

Prostate Health

Epilobium has shown to inhibit the enzyme “testosterone - 5 - alpha reductase

and aromatese, which are involved in the etiology of Benign Prostatic

Hyperlasia (BPH)

Incontinence

Clinical use of Epilobium has proven useful in controlling urinary incontinence

in both males and females. Epilobium is also known to help with bed wetting. It

is may also be beneficial to the kidneys.
