WELCOME

Welcome to New Pasture Lane School, it is important to us that we work in partnership with you. If at any time you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to pop in and see me. Children have two main educators in their lives—their parents and their teachers. We all have a crucial role to play and the impact is greater if parents and school work in partnership. All the school, staff and governors have worked hard together as a team, to make our school into not just a hardworking environment, but a happy and safe place to be. Our teachers are always delighted to have additional help in the classroom. If you can spare a little time and are interested in helping with various activities in school, please contact us. We are always happy for parents/carers/grandparents/friends to join us in Friday morning Praise Assembly. All school events and news are reported in our weekly newsletter which your child will bring home every Friday, and can be viewed on our website or on our APP. I look forward to working with you so that your child achieves the best that they can be. Mrs A Tadman Headteacher

How is the School Organised?

The school has a Foundation Stage led by Miss Fox, consisting of Foundation 1 (nursery)for part-time pupils and Foundation 2 for Reception pupils. Mrs Tulloch leads Key Stage 1 and Mrs Riley leads Key Stage 2. All three teams work as one unit within the school. In July 2014 the School’s Long Term Plan was revised to accommodate the new requirements of all the National Curriculum subjects plus RE and PHSCE addressing the issue of continuity and progression from Foundation to Year Six. Our Teaching Staff have undergone extensive In-service training in many areas of the curriculum. We are particularly proud of the way in which IT has been developed in our school. After the inspection in January 2017, the school was deemed good with outstanding elements. In 2017/18 academic year there will be Foundation 1 and 2, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. Pupils are assessed in maths, writing, reading, science and computing every half term. As soon as lack of progress is identified, support strategies are put in place. If a child is extremely skilled, they will be placed on the More Skilled register and their needs catered for. All classrooms have teaching assistants.

7 What should my child wear for school? New Pasture Lane School has a school uniform which was introduced with the full support of staff, governors and parents. Our red sweatshirts bearing the school logo can be purchased locally as can plain red sweatshirts and white polo shirts with the school logo can also be bought. Please ensure all clothing is marked with your child’s name Hairstyles : the school reserves the right to decide what is acceptable for school. What are the options for lunch at school?

Every child needs a nutritious and filling meal in the middle of their busy day at school. We offer a delicious range of healthy hot meals, in addition to a range of sandwiches and salads, freshly prepared by our catering staff at a cost of £2.20 per day. Meals must be paid either or on a daily basis or weekly. We do not allow arrears to build up. Please make sure that money is sent to school in an envelope with the name of your child, the amount enclosed. Cheques should be made payable to PPPIML. Some children prefer to bring a packed lunch from home. In the interest of safety, glass bottles, flasks of hot drinks or soup and fizzy cans are not allowed. We would remind you that healthy eating is the building block for a healthy life for our children and request that sugary drinks and sweets are not sent in.

How do I apply for Free School Meals?

Details are available from County Hall on 01482 394799

We do ask that even if your child has a packed lunch you do still apply as school re-ceives additional funding based on the number of pupils eligible for free meals even if the meals are not in fact taken. Access to some holiday activities is free to children who qualify for free school meals.

What if my child is ill?

Please inform school on your child’s first day of absence either by letter, telephone or text to 07484525456. The secretary will ring on the first day of absence, if we have not been informed. This is a safety check. An unexplained absence, or if the school is dissatisfied with the explanation, will be recorded and will result in an unauthorised absence on your child’s report. The Education Welfare Officer may visit pupils whose attendance is less than 90% Children who have 100% attendance during a term receive a certificate of congratulations. When a child is absent, it is assumed that they are not well enough to study, so homework will not be provided; only in extreme circumstances. Children who are regularly late to school will be informed by letter of the amount of lateness and referred to the Education Welfare Officer

What if my child needs medicine during school?

If your child is well enough to be in school and has a course of medicine prescribed by a doctor, we will administer the required dose at lunchtime. A request form must be completed at the office. What is available to my child out of the classroom and beyond the school day?

We all know that children learn a great deal beyond the classroom and a New Pas-ture Lane School we do our best to ensure that every individual has as many oppor-tunities to broaden their knowledge and extend their skills through a range of addi-tional activities.

Breakfast Club The school provides a free breakfast club every morning from 8 a.m. to 8.40 a.m. A breakfast of toast or cereal is provided to all children arriving before 8.10 a.m.

School Visits The staff make good use of the local area to enrich the learning opportunities of the children in their care and a range of visits are planned throughout the school year. These included visits to local museums, historic buildings, theatre and areas of nat-ural beauty. The school is a Beach School. There is no charge for school trips.

After School Clubs

We offer a large range of opportunities for pupils both after school and at lunchtimes. A full list of clubs can be obtained from the leaflet rack in the play-ground entrance. Activities include sports, drama, dance, computers, gardening are open to different groups of children at different times throughout the year.

What can I do if I have a concern? We would hope that you will not have too many concerns during your child’s time with us, but if you need to have anything clarified, please follow the procedure be-low to help us to help you as quickly as possible. Firstly contact your child’s class teacher to discuss the situation If you are still concerned please contact the Headteacher, who will be happy to

resolve the situation. Should the previous actions not rectify the issue, the matter may then be the sub-ject of a formal complaint and, if appropriate, referred to the governing body in writ-ing. The governing body will appoint a panel to consider the complaint form all sides and try to reach a conclusion that is in the best interests of all parties. If the complaint is still unresolved, a parent may make a formal representation in writing to the Local Education Authority. A copy of the authority’s complaints proce-dure is available for inspection.

What if my child needs help in school?

There is detailed provision within the school for children with Special Educational Needs. Children are identified as having Special Educational Needs using a range of formal assessment tests, together with classroom observation and regular monitoring of work. In our school we have an “early identification” policy. In simple terms, if a child appears to have significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age, we respond quickly by consulting with the parents. We then ensure that support is given which is appropriate to the child’s needs. Pupils follow a structured programme of work with an Termly Support Plan and receive support on a one to one basis or within a small group. In addition there are many intervention programmes to support the child as an individual or as part of a group. Mrs Tulloch is the SEN Co-ordinator and is responsible for the school’s arrangements for identifying and meeting the Special Educational Needs of our pupils.

How will you provide the best education for my child? All children are entitled to a broad, balanced, relevant, progressive and differentiated curriculum, regardless of background, gender or ability. At all stages of development, learning will be structured and provide a stimulating, enjoyable and worthwhile experi-ence. Equality of access and equality of opportunity will underpin provision for all. We are keen to ensure that all children are offered the very best learning opportunities that stimulate and challenge. Therefore we recognise that some children need extra support either on a long term or short basis. We are lucky that we have a very experi-enced staff in school. The progress of all children is tracked regularly and this help us to identify those children who may need different or additional provision. We also have a register, and make additional provision for children who we consider to be More Skilled. You will be informed if this is the case for your child..

Is Sex Education taught in school? In Years 5 and 6, Sex Education is taught formally and we address the issues of growing up, human reproduction and parenthood. Films, books and booklets are available for inspection by parents. Towards the end of the Summer Term, Year 6 pupils are given a talk by the school nurse. Parents and carers may withdraw their child if they wish. Also children’s questions will be answered honestly, as and when they arise with regard to family life.

12

How can I help my child do their best in school?

We all want every child to succeed in all aspects of school life and a strong partnership between the school and parents is vital. There are many ways in which we can work in partnership for the benefit of your child, including: Make sure that you have child has good attendance and arrives in school on time,

prepared for the day. Keep us informed of any change in circumstances (contact details should be given

to the school office and updated regularly) Alert us to any concerns immediately Support your child by giving them the chance to complete homework in a peaceful

and productive atmosphere. Attend parents’ evenings or make alternative appointments if you are unable to do

so At various times during the year you will be presented with information about what is being studied or covered in school. If at all possible, please take time to discuss this with your child and ask they about what they are learning!

How do you keep my child safe in school? The safety of our pupils is paramount—if a child does not feel safe then they are not able to make the most of their time in school. We teach the children about how to keep themselves safe in a range of situations in-cluding on the road, on the internet and with regard to a variety of potentially dangerous situations and substances. Mrs Tadman, the Headteacher is the Child Protection Co-ordinator for the school and all the staff are trained in relevant Safeguarding procedures. If we have concerns about a child we will share them with the appropriated authorities in accordance with the Child Protection Policy, a copy of which is available from the office.

Is Religious Education taught in school? Our aim is to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of curriculum content for R.E. as stated in the East Riding Syllabus. Provision is made for daily collective acts of worship which are broadly Christian in character. Assemblies are organised for the whole school, and on occasions guest speakers are invited. Parents are invited to “Praise Assembly” on Friday mornings at 8.50 a.m. Parents may ask for their child to be withdrawn from Religious Education and worship. The school will make arrangements for parents to exercise their statutory right of with-drawal.

Page 13: PROSPECTUS - New Pasture Lane Primarynewpasturelaneprimary.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018-2019...In 2017/18 academic year there will be Foundation 1 and 2, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year

13 How does the school promote positive behaviour in the school?

We expect children to behave well from the moment they enter school at 8.40 a.m., to when they leave the school at 2.45 p.m. We would expect that this extends to travelling to and from school. We would respectfully request that parents, toddlers and other visitors also observe our School Code of Behaviour when on our School premises.

To support our School Code of Behaviour, we have a Behaviour Policy which incorporates a system of rewards and sanctions. This is in accordance with our Disability Equality Scheme Poli-cy (November 2007). We should emphasise that most children behave very well in our school. We expect parents to support us in maintaining a high standard of behaviour. If we have con-cerns, parents will be contacted and invited into school for discussions. This provides the oppor-tunity for us to work together and discuss any problems. We expect children to abide by the Golden Rules, which are displayed in classrooms, corridors and in the playground. These rules are reinforced in classroom circle time or assemblies and underpin the ethos in our school. Pupils can be awarded “Vivo” stars which they can use online and in “Vivoworld” and raffle tick-ets, which are drawn every week and a prize awarded. The children earn rewards for work, good behaviour and kindness to others. In Praise Assembly, each class teacher, the senior dinner supervisor and the headteacher nomi-nate children who have been ’special’ during the week. We welcome parents and governors to these assemblies, which take place every Friday at 8.50 a.m. In cases of poor behaviour in classrooms, children receive a verbal warning. If this does not have the desired effect, the child spends 5 minutes in a partner classroom, doing work set by his/her teacher. If after their return poor behaviour still persists their name is put on the board. 3 strikes will result in the child missing Golden Time. If this happens 3 times the Head will contact parents. In the case of serious misbehaviour Exclusion from school visits (on occasions, parents will be asked to accompany their children) Exclusion from school for a fixed term

What happens at lunchtime?

We try to ensure that lunchtimes are a happy, relaxed occasion. Our School Code of Behaviour applies particularly during the lunchtime break. Children who behave well are given lunchtime ‘Super Star’ vouchers. Our midday supervisors may in cases of poor behaviour send pupils for ‘time out’. If this continues they are sent to the head teacher, who will keep them off the play-ground. Their names are entered in a lunch time behaviour book. Those whose names appear at regular intervals will have a letter sent to parents

What do the Governors do and who are they? The Governing Body plays a key role in the life of the school, providing the strategic direction for the school and supporting the staff, pupils and parents in ensuring that the best possible provision is in place. The governors are very supportive of the school not only attending regular meetings but also scrutinising documentation, visiting the school and approving policies and acting as critical friends. The full governing body meets regularly, at least once a term. In addition there are committees that meet during the term.
