ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST MODERN UNIVERSITIES

Creating world-ready graduates

AUT’s mission is to create great graduates, and each member of our staff contributes to this. We offer exceptional learning experiences that prepare students to be successful wherever in the world their career may take them. We encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, and the ability to explore new technologies, challenge routine thinking and solve problems in new ways. We embrace new technologies to lead the learning of tomorrow and prepare our students for the rapidly changing world. As a contemporary university we also place an emphasis on working across disciplines in our research, and teaching and learning. Thanks to our innovative teaching, excellent reputation and combination of theoretical and practical learning, AUT graduates are highly favoured by employers, with 95% of available graduates in paid employment within nine months of graduation.

World-leading staffOur academic staff are research-active and at the forefront of their disciplines. Many of them are internationally known as experts in their fields, and organisations around the world draw on their expertise for key projects. For example, Associate Professor Felicity Lamm was appointed as the Government’s chief advisor for health and safety, and Professor Gail Pacheco’s research is being used by the Government to address the gender pay gap. Professor Steve Henry was the first person in Australasia to secure a spot in the world-leading Johnson & Johnson Innovation JLABS in Houston to further his work on surface-modification technology Kode Technology, which has the potential to fight cancer. Associate Professor Barbara Bollard’s innovative use of drones to monitor remote and unique ecosystems from Antarctica to Africa has caught the attention of scientists from NASA and the SETI Institute who recognise this approach could also help them find evidence of life on Mars.

A world-class university environmentWe’re proud to be one of the world’s best modern universities – Times Higher Education has ranked us as the top millennial university in Australasia and number 15 in the world. We have been a university since 2000, and are now the second largest in the country and ranked among the top 1% (251-300) of universities in the world. We have an overall five-star rating from university rankings organisation QS, in addition to five star ratings for Teaching, Employability, Research, Internationalisation, Facilities, Innovation and Inclusiveness. Study with us and you can enrol in our range of world-ranked subjects, which include New Zealand’s top-ranked health programmes and the country’s best sport science school.

An innovative teaching and learning spaceAUT’s three modern campuses have several award-winning buildings which were created using sustainable principles and feature inviting, collaborative and functional learning areas, auditoriums and research spaces. This includes the state-of-the-art Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences building, which has unique design features that mean it can be used as a teaching tool and ‘living lab’ where students can get hands-on experience. We also have a number of world-class facilities including one of a handful of motion capture studios in the country; New Zealand’s top sports science facility, AUT Millennium; and the country’s only two major radio telescopes, which are involved in projects with international research partners.

Innovative and relevant research AUT is ranked first in New Zealand for global research impact (the number of times our research is cited by academics globally) by Times Higher Education and the US News Global Universities Rankings. We have more than 60 research centres and institutes delivering leading research – from space research to artificial intelligence and robotics, and ecology to physical activity and nutrition. AUT research addresses issues facing the environment and society, and our discoveries are widely used. Our research also feeds back into the classroom, and students can contribute to and learn from these research discoveries.

A global outlookWe know that to create truly great graduates, we must do more than get them ready for their career; we must get them ready for the world. We are consistently ranked first in New Zealand for international outlook by world rankings organisations QS and Times Higher Education. We have more than 5,000 industry partners around the world, and have collaborated on research projects with 140 different countries. Our students are from 141 different countries, and half of our academic staff were born overseas, and they often share their international experience and connections with their students.

Students at AUT South Campus

“AUT provides a really international environment, which helps students become familiar with the real workplace outside the university. AUT is ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world, which is evidence for the quality of its education. AUT is also the youngest of New Zealand’s universities, which makes it the most dynamic and innovative university in the country.”

Trang NguyenVietnamMaster of Marketing

“I enjoyed the level to which AUT staff are engaged and passionate about their discipline – all in their own unique way. I was actively involved as a research ‘test dummy’ a number of times and it was inspiring to be around people who were continuing to challenge what we know. I really enjoyed the connections I made with my classmates and with staff. Many of these colleagues are still close friends today.”

David CooperBachelor of Health Science (Physiotherapy)

“AUT is always evolving its curriculum to align with the industry and has forward-thinking lecturers to ensure that when we graduate, we have the best chance at assimilating into our trained profession with the confidence and tools we need. Many designers I admire have come from AUT and I think that is a testament to the strong education that AUT offers.”

Toni ClarkTe Āti Awa, Taranaki, NgāpuhiBachelor of Design in Communication Design

“Industry practice is so valuable once you graduate. You don’t realise until after you’ve graduated how important this part of your study is in giving you a head start once you graduate. This was one of the reasons I chose AUT – it bridges the gap between academic studies and industry practice. My third-year workplace experience was the highlight for me, and I made the most of making connections within my industry.”

Katrina SharlottBachelor of Sport and Recreation in Exercise Science and Management

“I would highly recommend doctoral study at AUT. The high-quality research projects; talented and skilled teachers, researchers and technicians; friendly staff and colleagues, excellent lab facilities and unique resources all contribute towards achieving your research goals. International students will also appreciate the truly international environment of AUT and New Zealand.”

Farhana MuznebinBangladeshDoctor of Philosophy – Science

“There are support services in place for just about everything you could need as a student at AUT. The student services are there to support us as students, and quite often they involve advice from past or present students who may have been exactly in the same position as us.”

Deciding what to study and where to study are the two biggest decisions for anyone considering their university options. But how do you decide?

AUT’s new campaign — “Find your greatness” — features some of the thousands of graduates who have found careers they love after being given the chance to explore subjects and ideas that excited them, with the support of knowledgeable lecturers and researchers.

One of those graduates is Mohamud Mohamed, who was eight years old when he arrived in New Zealand as a refugee from Somalia. Today he is a policy advisor for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and co-chair of Auckland Council’s Ethnic Peoples Advisory Panel.

He chose AUT for his studies because it offered a mix of the social sciences and conflict resolution programmes that he wanted, and then he chose it again for his master’s degree in public policy.

“My lecturers gave me courage to go deeper, to ask why, and to believe that I can make the world better, safer and more just.”

Another graduate featured in the campaign is indigenous storyteller Matilda Poasa, who came to AUT to study a Bachelor of Māori

Development majoring in Māori Media.

Backed by supportive lecturers with industry experience, within the first year Matilda had made a documentary and later a drama about the spirit of a taonga returned to its rightful owner.

Supported by AUT’s Internz programme she secured an internship with the Sundance Institute in Los Angeles – and she still collaborates with them on projects now that she’s back in New Zealand and working for the Māoriland Film Festival/Māoriland Charitable Trust.

Matilda, who is of Samoan descent, says her time at AUT changed everything. “I realised that telling our stories was truly possible.”

Other graduates in the campaign include wildlife cinematographer Julian Braatvedt, business creator Denym Bird, marine biologist Ticiana Fettermann and NGO fundraiser Bridget Dawson. When they talk about their time at AUT there are some common themes: AUT helped them unlock their passion and potential, and paved the way for the careers they have now.

Social services agencies around the world face incredibly complex, high-stakes questions. How do they fairly distribute limited resources? Identify those most in need? Understand risk levels and take steps to prevent harm?

Researchers at the AUT Centre for Social Data Analytics (CSDA) are helping agencies use data to find answers and make better decisions about how to support the most vulnerable people in their communities.

CSDA founder and director Professor Rhema Vaithianathan says the centre’s research team of data scientists, economists and software engineers builds computational models and assessment tools to process the vast quantities of data available to government and social service agencies.

Looking into the data helps agencies to better understand their own practices and to direct services to those at highest risk for adverse outcomes.

“Our predictive risk modelling provides rapid insights about risk levels for individuals in the longer term, giving staff in these agencies additional information to help them make consistent, quality decisions. The volume and complexity of the available data means agency staff couldn’t easily analyse it or make use of it in their decision-making without these models.”

One of the agencies CSDA has been working with since 2014 is Allegheny County’s Department of Human Services (DHS) in Pennsylvania, US. CSDA models are already successfully in use by DHS staff to support call-screening decisions about children reported as being subjected to maltreatment and neglect.

New models are now helping Allegheny County prioritise harm prevention services for newborns and their families through the Hello Baby programme, and to triage requests for housing assistance so that people at greatest risk of harm associated with homelessness get help first.

CSDA has developed a global reputation for its research and social impact and Professor Vaithianathan says the focus is now on working with collaborators who can help scale out the social impact of the centre’s work.

International research partners include the Children’s Data Network at the University of Southern California, the Institute for Social Science Research at The University of Queensland, which hosts a second CSDA site, and scale-out collaborators Mathematica in the US.

“When we imagine our near-future, we need to think about what we value, how design can apply those values in meaningful ways, and how we build spaces that do this in ecologically sustainable ways.”

Designing buildings and spaces for a future that doesn’t exist yet is a challenge that architects have always faced. But with the increased pace of technological and ecological change, figuring out how to design for the future is even more critical. And it’s a challenge that will have a significant impact on future architecture graduates.

AUT has responded to the challenge with two programmes. AUT’s Bachelor of Architecture and Future Environments - co-created with Ngā Aho, the Network of Māori Design Professionals - and Master of Architecture (Professional) are focused on integrated, responsive architectural research and design practices.

Nick Sargent, a lecturer in architecture and future environments, says the focus is on developing graduates who can apply holistic architectural design thinking and understand how the integration of building technology, construction and social theory can address critical issues such as the climate emergency, biodiversity crisis, and rising social inequities.

“The architecture and construction industry is responsible for 20% of New Zealand’s gross carbon footprint, a figure that is even higher globally, so it is essential that our programmes contribute to reducing this. This requires students to rethink design and construction processes.”

“We want our students to understand architecture as a socio-ecological activity, where they are designing cultural spaces and ecological relationships,” says Associate Professor Amanda Yates.

Sivan Danin was part of the first cohort of students in the new programme and says he chose the course because of its relevance.

“Taking a holistic approach and aiming to tackle the big issues, like climate change and negative environmental impacts within design, feels meaningful.”

One of his first-year projects saw him develop a multi-functional ruma ora (living room) space at St Mary’s Bay in Auckland, that took inspiration from the Maramataka (lunar calendar) and followed Te Aranga principles in its use of sustainable design and materials.

EVOLVING ARCHITECTURE TO MEET FUTURE NEEDS

Bringing together researchers from different industries and specialisations to develop and apply new medical technologies and therapies is the focus for the AUT BioDesign Lab - but it also plays a crucial role in introducing students to new research opportunities and ways of working.

BioDesign Lab co-director, Associate Professor David White, says since the lab was established in 2013 it has supported a range of complex projects drawing on expertise from across AUT’s different research disciplines and collaborating with industry and community partners.

Master of Engineering student Bradley Nixon was supported by Aō Air to develop and validate a new proof-of-concept ATMOS facemask technology that has received significant funding and government support, and is set to go on sale to the public.

With support from Surgisplint Ltd and Callaghan Innovation, another Master of Engineering student, Michael Van Wyk, embedded smart technology in the Zero-Cast WX wrist brace system which can provide information on the brace fit and on the user’s mobility exercises, to assist with better tracking of recovery for patients and clinicians.

Some of the BioDesign Lab’s multidisciplinary projects have extended beyond traditional medtech applications.

School of Art and Design senior lecturer James Charlton is working with Jasmin Hitching, a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering student, to develop a programmable robot with sensors and special machine tooling attachments that will be capable of creating sculpture in response to the movements of an artist.

“Traditional education models often compartmentalise learning and fields of study, but projects like this one remove those artificial barriers and pave the way for more adaptive, less prescribed learning which supports new knowledge and discoveries.”

Jasmin says the project has given her valuable problem-solving skills and insight into how different industries tackle the same problem and arrive at different solutions.

“Aside from learning the technical skills involved in communicating with and controlling robots, I’ve got to see the process involved in taking an idea through to a working product.”

Giving students opportunities to experience marine environments, and get beyond labs and lecture theatres, is an important focus for AUT’s marine science programmes.

“Scientific expedition is a really critical skill. There is a huge amount of planning and logistics involved before you can start to gather data and make discoveries,” says Dan Breen, programme leader for marine biology. “We want to ensure our students develop those skills, in the field, as part of their study.”

Field trips include estuaries, zoos, marine parks and intertidal shores but also extend beyond New Zealand waters.

AUT has cultivated scientific partnerships in the Pacific and has a research station in the Solomon Islands where undergraduate and postgraduate students can undertake fieldwork.

“We’ve seen how valuable the experience is for our students. They come away with a more global outlook, they can carry out research in both temperate and tropical marine environments and they build practical skills that are vital for ecologists.”

Getting to study marine life in the Solomon Islands during his Bachelor of Science is part of what inspired AUT PhD candidate Antony Vavia to pursue postgraduate studies, and he has spent the past year collecting fieldwork data on Mitiaro Island in the Cook Islands.

For students studying marine biology at AUT, the university’s globally respected researchers and research connections also open up exciting opportunities.

Marine ecologist AUT Professor Andrea Alfaro has led major research projects for New Zealand’s aquaculture industry to improve the reproduction and growth of mussels and other commercial shellfish.

Now working with the Cawthron Institute, she has secured a government grant to establish a shellfish culture programme which will see students working with industry on commercial projects.

Associate Professor Dr Kat Bolstad, who heads up the lab for Cephalopod Ecology and Systematics aka “AUT Squid Lab”, has established links with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) giving students access to life changing research experiences. PhD candidate Ryan Howard took part in a scientific expedition to the Chatham Rise and dissected a giant squid aboard the NIWA research vessel Tangaroa.

AUT marine students are also undertaking research in New Zealand and Australian waters thanks to partnerships with organisations including Seafood Innovations in New Zealand and the Australian Blue Economy Collaborative Research Centre.

For students at AUT, one of the three main campuses in Auckland — North, South or City Campus — will become the place they spend most of their time.

“We understand that the physical environment we create on each campus plays a massive role in shaping the experiences of students,” says Dr Tony Lanigan, director of major projects in the Estates Group at AUT.

AUT has made an ongoing commitment to sustainable, contemporary building design that supports positive teaching and learning experiences, and two of its latest projects are also supporting life outside the classroom.

For many students, starting their studies at university coincides with another major milestone: moving out of home.

To ease this transition AUT has commissioned brand new accommodation facilities right next to the City Campus, with housing for more than 695 students in their own studio apartment, including 25 apartments designed for students with special access needs.

The apartment complex has communal recreation and dining spaces, 24-hour security, and on-site staff to support students and facilitate the residential life programme which runs social

events throughout the year. Each apartment has its own kitchenette, bathroom, study desk and chair.

On the North Campus, AUT is looking at developing a central hub or ‘new heart’ for the health sciences and sport and recreation programmes, and has already completed site preparation works.

The project will include a brand new four-storey building with new staff offices, teaching and research spaces, and collaborative social learning spaces including a café and Student Hub. The project also includes the complete refurbishment of an adjacent building and a new connection into the library.

Dr Lanigan says one of the most exciting aspects of the project is that it will be AUT’s most sustainable building to date because of its LED lighting, rainwater harvesting for irrigation and 60% of all water use in the building, high-tech cladding and roofing systems to support lower energy consumption, and a mainly timber structure, resulting in close to ‘embedded carbon neutral’ status.

“A huge amount of time and planning goes into creating adaptable spaces that make a positive contribution to AUT, and give our students and staff a really welcoming, stimulating environment.”

COLLABORATIVE SPACES FOR LIFE AND LEARNING

Launching a business is hard work and many fail to make it past the idea stage, but the CO.STARTERS programme at AUT is boosting the success rate for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Southern Studios director Geoff Holmes says CO.STARTERS and some final-year papers in his Bachelor of Business at AUT were the catalyst for starting his own creative production studio.

“They provided the framework that simplified an extremely complex business landscape, enabling me to not only build my business, but to grow our clients’ businesses as well.”

Geoff opted into the ten-week CO.STARTERS programme at the end of his degree, wanting to build his own business but lacking the right experience.

“I knew I wanted to create something within the production and advertising industry and gave myself two years to make it work. I was super green, hadn’t run a business before, and I was looking for anything and everything to upskill myself so I didn’t fail.”

Geoff, who now runs an award-winning studio, says CO.STARTERS provided valuable mentoring and helped him focus on critical steps including

developing his business plan and honing the company’s point of difference.

CO.STARTERS has also been the launching pad for a VR company, a meal kit business, a food producer specialising in plant-based, allergen and planet friendly products, and a beverage company successfully tackling the Australasian energy drink market with a clean alternative.

Led by programme manager Sabrina Nagel, CO.STARTERS was established at AUT in 2015 and is based on an international programme designed to foster entrepreneurial ecosystems and equip people with the skills to launch a business.

Director of entrepreneurship and innovation, Martin Bell, says the results have been impressive.

“CO.STARTERS has proven to be an empowering foundation for aspiring student entrepreneurs.

“Graduates of the programme leave with the insights and tools they need to take the next practical steps in building a sustainable business. Perhaps most importantly they become part of a growing CO.STARTERS community with a better understanding of how to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.”

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH AUT researchers work on projects across the built environment, in New Zealand and around the world. You can collaborate on projects, and work with graduates and architects to create meaningful change in the built environment. As an architecture student at AUT you can also access our Architectural Engineering Lab, Built Environment Engineering Lab, Communities and Learning Lab and Urban Wellbeing Lab. You work on research projects that demonstrate the way architecture, design intelligence and future cities can become intertwined.

“I like that architecture at AUT has a focus on the future, and that we’re thinking about our environment while studying architecture. I would absolutely recommend the Bachelor of Architecture and Future Environments to students who are

keen to learn about so much more than just ‘architecture’ itself. I believe that as architects and designers, we need to act and think of tangible ways to

prevent further global problems as we play a massive role in sustainable development and determining the state of our ecosystem. I want to work as an architect after I graduate, and integrate the skills that I gain from this degree to contribute to the sustainable growth of cities and urban environments around the world.”

Azra Banu Student, Bachelor of Architecture and Future Environments

“I came to AUT to study spatial design, but had always aspired to move into architecture eventually. I’d love to have the opportunity to create spaces that improve people’s lives and inspire the next generation. When AUT introduced new architecture programmes in the final year of my bachelor’s degree, I jumped at the opportunity. The future of architecture will play an important role within the sustainability of our environments, mankind’s wellbeing and the salvation of our climate. AUT’s architecture programmes were established to tackle these issues, challenge the current state of architecture, and think about the possibilities we can offer as future architects.”

“AUT has its finger on the pulse of design, which is an especially dynamic industry. The workshops and studios make use of the latest technology for designers to make their ideas a reality. With strong connections and staff within the industry, alongside some game-changing graduates, AUT is leading the change in thinking for the future

of design. While I was at AUT, I used many of my university projects to enter entrepreneurial and design competitions, winning a number of awards and

being invited to exhibit a student project at the Global Grad Show at Dubai Design Week.”

“I think the academic staff we had were so special, and showed us they really cared and thought that what we were doing was important. Making art and then showing it to others can be really scary and personal, so it’s important that those lecturers hold space for you. I loved that we were able to crack jokes and cry in front of them. Our class size for sculpture was really small, so the friendships I made ran deep and the attention from the lecturers was really high. I’m still good friends with my classmates and lecturers, which feels really important.”

“I felt a strong sense of community and belonging at AUT, especially seeing Pacific representation throughout all levels of the university. I felt especially encouraged to succeed after seeing my lecturers commit time and effort towards their students’ development and achievement. It’s easy to feel motivated to succeed when you have such inspirational people in your corner. The smaller-sized workshops we had at AUT helped to create a comfortable environment where I felt confident in participating amongst my peers. I’ve also enjoyed the support systems in place at AUT, specifically those tailored to Māori or Pacific students.”

“At first I wasn’t sure which university I wanted to attend as I had received scholarships for three different universities, but once I had researched what I wanted in a university, I realised that AUT ticked all the boxes. I wanted a university that was supportive and cared about its students, and AUT instantly stood out to me. I also loved that AUT had small class sizes, gave students the opportunity to gain workplace experience

at the end of their degree and offered many opportunities outside of the curriculum, which results in AUT alumni graduating with more than just degrees. I know I’ve made the right call choosing AUT.”

“The in-class experience has been the most enjoyable part of my studies. The lecturers are all experts in their fields, and they always share their valuable knowledge and experiences. Because they share real business world issues and practices with us, I feel engaged and know that what we’re learning will be useful for my future career. I also enjoy that we’re all sharing different ideas and diverse perspectives, which makes the classes exciting. AUT has a robust reputation for providing an exceptional university education and having outstanding student support for all international students. Other students currently studying at New Zealand universities recommended that I should pursue my degree with AUT. This made me confident in choosing AUT.”

You complete your degree with some of the hard skills you’ll need for the changing world, as well as the soft skills and the adaptability to keep developing. Being able to experience life as a journalist was one of the highlights of my university studies. All third-year journalism students go through a series of what’s known as a ‘Newsday’ as part of one of the core courses. Every Wednesday, the media centre on the AUT City Campus is transformed into a fully functional newsroom that the journalism students run. It was great spending the day feeling like we’re actual journalists already.”

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH At AUT’s School of Education, we believe in high-quality research that has impact, and have world-class researchers and research strengths across education. Our research-active staff are widely known for their expertise in all areas of the education sector – from education policy, the changing nature of public education and mindfulness for teachers, to educational leadership and leadership development, equity culture and diversity, and the philosophy of education.

“I heard from a past student that the practicum aspect of the education degree was better at AUT; providing more time in schools to learn first-hand the skills and techniques to teach effectively. AUT has a forward-thinking education programme, focused on directing learning towards teaching and using practical opportunities to consolidate

theoretical knowledge. The group projects provided opportunities to work with a variety of people, and learn how to manage people’s strengths and weaknesses. AUT’s culture of

support ensured that we all had a safe place to reflect and celebrate our experiences. All of this has transferred into my professional career; having a network of support and

resources to tap into is invaluable.”

“What I’ve enjoyed most is being part of an amazing group of people, all studying and training together. Being able to build relationships with my lecturers and programme leaders has been so beneficial to my learning, and I’ve loved discussing issues, concepts and ideas with my classmates and lecturers. The biggest challenge was juggling the demands of the degree with the demands of being a mother of four children. The Master of Teaching and Learning focuses on resilience and wellbeing, which helped me to keep myself centred through a demanding and chaotic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The lecturers would check in on me and see how I was managing, and that support helped a lot.”

“AUT caters to the modern world by adapting its courses to provide students with the appropriate skillset, ready for the demands of the working world. I selected the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Maritime Engineering because it was unique compared to the rest of the disciplines on offer. I knew it would give me the best opportunity for a worldwide career and the opportunity to study both in New Zealand and in Australia. My day-to-day job now involves turning a client’s dream into reality. My main area of work involves the design of high-speed hydrofoil-assisted catamarans, predominantly for New Zealand, Australia and America.”

“I enjoyed meeting interesting and like-minded people during my time at AUT, and participated in many different research projects and sport activities. It was a memorable time. One of the highpoints for me was completing the AUT Edge Award, which

challenges students to develop skills in the areas of collaboration, communication and creativity. Initially I signed up for the AUT Edge Award as I knew I could add this to my

CV, but as I started attending the seminars and doing the voluntary work I realised it was much more than that. Every single seminar or presentation helped me

get closer to the type of job I wanted to do.”

“In comparison to other world-renowned universities, AUT graduates are highly favoured by employers. The reputation for graduate success in the industry demonstrates that AUT is doing excellent work when it comes to teaching and industry connections. For me, this was a significant reason for choosing AUT. In the first year of my PhD, AUT became the first university in New Zealand to launch an electric bus, travelling between the different campuses. I was so proud to have the chance to participate in this project, and research the potential impact of electric buses on the electricity grid and other key information related to electrical vehicle technology.”

“I can honestly say AUT has helped mould me into the qualified registered nurse I am today. The greatest skill I’ve learnt as a result of studying at AUT is the ability to connect theory with my clinical practice, and use critical thinking to solve problems in a more holistic approach when caring for my patients. I got to meet lifetime friends, and was supported and motivated by my lecturers to be the best I can be. My favourite part of it all was being exposed to different areas of nursing while I was

on my clinical placements.”

“I’ve always been passionate about those experiencing homelessness, and my master’s degree research focuses on homeless people in the face of emergencies and disasters, using Auckland as a case study. When people

in the sector found out I was researching homelessness post COVID-19, all of a sudden I was in working groups with academics around the globe, and

working on real solutions to homeless people’s vulnerabilities to emergencies and disasters. This was all due to my supervisor and his connections within the

profession. I can’t speak enough about how this degree has given me so many more opportunities than I ever expected.”

Mathew St Martin USAMaster of Disaster Risk Management and Development studentBachelor of Sport and Recreation in Outdoor Education

“During my time at AUT the highlights would definitely be the extremely close cohort we had, and the diversity of learning and placement opportunities, especially working on the stroke ward in Waikato and at ABI (Acquired Brain Injury) Rehabilitation in Ranui. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the holistic transition and raw emotion that came with the progress made by those I worked with. My role now allows me to work directly with the players and staff, and help rehabilitate them using the most up-to-date research and protocols in relation to professional football. I’ve also loved being able to use my experience and the club’s profile to highlight the importance of mental health and overall wellbeing.”

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH We pride ourselves on delivering ground-breaking research across the field of language and culture, and our academic staff are known for their expertise across the field of linguistics. We’re also proud to be the home of the AUT Centre for Creative Writing, a creative hub for established and budding writers that offers an open and exciting learning environment where you can pursue your creative writing ideas and turn them into reality.

“When I first applied for my PhD, AUT was supportive and the enrolment process was comprehensive. My supervisor-to-be was very interested in my study. It was a combination of subject expertise, good enrolment practice and student support that encouraged me to study here. AUT offers a lot of workshops to help PhD students through their university journey, and the postgraduate groups provide opportunities for me to meet with others to discuss my research, which is helpful. I think AUT has a vibrant and diverse student-oriented culture, and

because I have three kids I also appreciate that the School of Language and Culture is a very family friendly space.”

S“On my first day working at McVeagh Fleming as a summer clerk I was handed a file concerning a topic we had just covered in a criminal law workshop at AUT a couple weeks before. Without that workshop I wouldn’t have known where to

start, but I managed to recall the relevant legislation and special exceptions, which impressed my supervising solicitor. This experience has really made me appreciate AUT’s law lecturers and workshop leaders as they make sure that their teaching can be applied in the real world. The lecturers were excellent teachers, accessible and happy to answer any queries.”

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH We deliver leading research in a number of areas within Māori and indigenous development, working closely with academics and organisations from around New Zealand and the world. As a postgraduate student you work closely with academic staff who are known as experts in their field – from Māori business and entrepreneurship to Māori media and from Mātauranga Māori to New Zealand history and the Treaty of Waitangi.

“At first I was looking at studying communication studies, but after attending the AUT open day, AUT LIVE, I discovered the Māori media degree, which combined my love for media and the Māori culture. I knew immediately that this was the university degree for me. A favourite highlight of my studies was creating a documentary with my friends on how attitudes towards te reo Māori can hinder its growth. We produced, filmed and edited our documentary over 10 weeks, which was fun and stressful at the same time. I was extremely proud of the project and with the A+ grade we received.”

Stasia Wharepouri Te Rarawa, Ngāpuhi, Cook Island Māori, Niuean Administrator, Kiwis for KiwiBachelor of Māori Development in Māori Media

“I chose this degree because I wanted to study something that would allow me to be creative, use my te reo Māori, and learn more about te ao Māori and kaupapa Māori. I loved being in a kaupapa Māori environment where everyone was so proudly Māori; proud of their culture and language. This experience inspired me to strengthen my own reo and I took a gap year and studied abroad in Shanghai for half a year to learn Mandarin

Chinese. My degree also enabled me to start learning the other official language of Aotearoa; New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).”

They all had great stories to tell from the many organisations and projects they had been a part of, both here in New Zealand and overseas. As they discussed the fieldtrips, projects and research I

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH We believe in high-quality research that has impact, and our world-class researchers have expertise across social sciences and social justice - from human rights and gender equality, to psychology, criminology and community development. As a postgraduate student, you work closely with some of New Zealand’s most widely known experts in social sciences and social justice. Our experienced lecturers constantly draw on their own international and New Zealand experience and research to inform their teaching. You could also benefit from the expertise of the Centre for Social Data Analytics, which applies strong data science to linked data, undertaking research that tells us new things about the human experience.

“I’ve had a bit of a lightbulb moment when I was completing an assessment where we had to practise submitting a recommendation to the United Nations on behalf of a marginalised group. Throughout the research process, it became very apparent that the social and economic challenges that Māori face are very similar to the challenges we as Native Americans are facing. I think this realisation has really reinvigorated my passion for indigenous human rights. What I’ve enjoyed most about studying at AUT are the smaller classes, and being able

to connect with likeminded individuals who share the same passion for human rights as I do. I feel that I’ve received a more personalised learning experience, and my

opinions are heard and appreciated.”

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH AUT is globally known for its leading sport and exercise science research. Our research covers sport and activity-related areas, as well as performance, nutrition, coaching and human potential. We’re proud to be the home of New Zealand’s top sport and fitness facility, AUT Millennium, which helps our communities be healthy and our top athletes become champions. Based at AUT Millennium, the Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand (SPRINZ) is New Zealand’s number one sports research institute. Its world-class laboratory facilities and international reputation attract many overseas researchers and students to New Zealand, and SPRINZ research has received funding from organisations like the Health Research Council, Sport New Zealand and the World Health Organization.

“Completing the second-year Analysing Performance course was eye-opening and gave rise to my amazing workplace experience at the Vodafone Warriors, within the performance analysis department. Having the opportunity to be a part of the team, work with industry-leading software and technology, and link in theoretical concepts to my duties gave my learning real substance and deepened my desire to work within

the sport industry. Another amazing moment was in my third-year Integrative Coaching course. Discovering the concept of coach development, and linking in all knowledge on

coaching theory and experience was very inspiring. This has consequently fuelled my passion to contribute to this very influential line of work.”

Scott LewisCommunity Coach Advisor, Sport Auckland

Bachelor of Sport and Recreation in Coaching

“The environment and the culture at SPRINZ, which is based at AUT Millennium, is amazing. This has made my PhD journey very enjoyable. Everyone is super friendly and it has been really easy to arrive and feel good. I haven’t been homesick once since leaving France and coming to AUT! We have access to great people who can help us with many topics, and there is high-end equipment to support our research. ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

AUT classes are taught in English. If English, Māori or NZ Sign Language is not your first language, you need to prove you have the minimum level of English for your chosen AUT programme.

We need to assess your level of English to ensure you can succeed in your programme. AUT does not accept responsibility if you fail courses because of a lack of competence in English.

For initial teacher education programmes (Bachelor of Education, Master of Teaching and Learning, Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching) visit https://teachingcouncil.nz for the Teaching Council English language requirements.

International students at NZ secondary schoolsIf you’re gaining University Entrance (UE) through NCEA, IB or CIE, you must meet the UE literacy requirements. You can’t replace the literacy requirements with an English language test result. Some AUT programmes have language requirements higher than UE literacy.

Students with qualifications from outside of New ZealandApplying on the basis of a qualification from another country? Use your official results for one of the following tests or qualifications to meet the English language requirements. Results can be up to two years old.

IELTS (Academic)Due to professional registration requirements, IELTS is the required English test for most health science degrees. It’s also the preferred English test for all other AUT qualifications. If you gain UE through a NZ secondary school qualification, you can’t replace the UE literacy requirements with IELTS.

Some programmes have higher requirements than the ones listed below.

Doctoral degreesIELTS 6.5 overall with 7.0* in Writing and all other bands 6.0 or higher

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: PREPARING TO STUDY IN NEW ZEALAND

Working in New ZealandAs an international student you can work 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during scheduled vacations. Please note that the number of hours you can work during your study will not be enough to fund your studies. Master’s by research and doctoral students may be granted unlimited work rights.

To find out more visit immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/options/study/working-during-after-your-study

Medical and travel insurance The New Zealand Government requires all international students to have appropriate insurance. Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of the treatment. That is why it is so important that you have medical and travel insurance while studying at AUT.

To make it easy, we include AUT’s default medical insurance, the Studentsafe Inbound University plan, as part of your Offer of Place. You don’t have to accept the AUT insurance policy, and can choose an alternative from an approved provider on our website.
