Associate Professor Barbara Bollard’s innovative use of drones to monitor remote and unique ecosystems from Antarctica to Africa has caught the attention of scientists from NASA and the SETI Institute who recognise this approach could also help them find evidence of life on Mars.

Deciding what to study and where to study are the two biggest decisions for anyone considering their university options. But how do you decide?

AUT’s new campaign — “Find your greatness” — features some of the thousands of graduates who have found careers they love after being given the chance to explore subjects and ideas that excited them, with the support of knowledgeable lecturers and researchers.

One of those graduates is Mohamud Mohamed, who was eight years old when he arrived in New Zealand as a refugee from Somalia. Today he is a policy advisor for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and co-chair of Auckland Council’s Ethnic Peoples Advisory Panel.

He chose AUT for his studies because it offered a mix of the social sciences and conflict resolution programmes that he wanted, and then he chose it again for his master’s degree in public policy.

“My lecturers gave me courage to go deeper, to ask why, and to believe that I can make the world better, safer and more just.”

Another graduate featured in the campaign is indigenous storyteller Matilda Poasa, who came to AUT to study a Bachelor of Māori

Development majoring in Māori Media.

Backed by supportive lecturers with industry experience, within the first year Matilda had made a documentary and later a drama about the spirit of a taonga returned to its rightful owner.

Supported by AUT’s Internz programme she secured an internship with the Sundance Institute in Los Angeles – and she still collaborates with them on projects now that she’s back in New Zealand and working for the Māoriland Film Festival/Māoriland Charitable Trust.

Matilda, who is of Samoan descent, says her time at AUT changed everything. “I realised that telling our stories was truly possible.”

Other graduates in the campaign include wildlife cinematographer Julian Braatvedt, business creator Denym Bird, marine biologist Ticiana Fettermann and NGO fundraiser Bridget Dawson. When they talk about their time at AUT there are some common themes: AUT helped them unlock their passion and potential, and paved the way for the careers they have now.

FINDING GREATNESS AT AUT

Social services agencies around the world face incredibly complex, high-stakes questions. How do they fairly distribute limited resources? Identify those most in need? Understand risk levels and take steps to prevent harm?

Researchers at the AUT Centre for Social Data Analytics (CSDA) are helping agencies use data to find answers and make better decisions about how to support the most vulnerable people in their communities.

CSDA founder and director Professor Rhema Vaithianathan says the centre’s research team of data scientists, economists and software engineers builds computational models and assessment tools to process the vast quantities of data available to government and social service agencies.

Looking into the data helps agencies to better understand their own practices and to direct services to those at highest risk for adverse outcomes.

“Our predictive risk modelling provides rapid insights about risk levels for individuals in the longer term, giving staff in these agencies additional information to help them make consistent, quality decisions. The volume and complexity of the available data means agency staff couldn’t easily analyse it or make use of it in their decision-making without these models.”

One of the agencies CSDA has been working with since 2014 is Allegheny County’s Department of Human Services (DHS) in Pennsylvania, US. CSDA models are already successfully in use by DHS staff to support call-screening decisions about children reported as being subjected to maltreatment and neglect.

New models are now helping Allegheny County prioritise harm prevention services for newborns and their families through the Hello Baby programme, and to triage requests for housing assistance so that people at greatest risk of harm associated with homelessness get help first.

CSDA has developed a global reputation for its research and social impact and Professor Vaithianathan says the focus is now on working with collaborators who can help scale out the social impact of the centre’s work.

International research partners include the Children’s Data Network at the University of Southern California, the Institute for Social Science Research at The University of Queensland, which hosts a second CSDA site, and scale-out collaborators Mathematica in the US.

USING DATA TO PREVENT HARM AND CREATE SOCIAL EQUITY

“When we imagine our near-future, we need to think about what we value, how design can apply those values in meaningful ways, and how we build spaces that do this in ecologically sustainable ways.”

Designing buildings and spaces for a future that doesn’t exist yet is a challenge that architects have always faced. But with the increased pace of technological and ecological change, figuring out how to design for the future is even more critical. And it’s a challenge that will have a significant impact on future architecture graduates.

AUT has responded to the challenge with two programmes. AUT’s Bachelor of Architecture and Future Environments - co-created with Ngā Aho, the Network of Māori Design Professionals - and Master of Architecture (Professional) are focused on integrated, responsive architectural research and design practices.

Nick Sargent, a lecturer in architecture and future environments, says the focus is on developing graduates who can apply holistic architectural design thinking and understand how the integration of building technology, construction and social theory can address critical issues such as the climate emergency, biodiversity crisis, and rising social inequities.

“The architecture and construction industry is responsible for 20% of New Zealand’s gross carbon footprint, a figure that is even higher globally, so it is essential that our programmes contribute to reducing this. This requires students to rethink design and construction processes.”

“We want our students to understand architecture as a socio-ecological activity, where they are designing cultural spaces and ecological relationships,” says Associate Professor Amanda Yates.

Sivan Danin was part of the first cohort of students in the new programme and says he chose the course because of its relevance.

“Taking a holistic approach and aiming to tackle the big issues, like climate change and negative environmental impacts within design, feels meaningful.”

One of his first-year projects saw him develop a multi-functional ruma ora (living room) space at St Mary’s Bay in Auckland, that took inspiration from the Maramataka (lunar calendar) and followed Te Aranga principles in its use of sustainable design and materials.

EVOLVING ARCHITECTURE TO MEET FUTURE NEEDS

Bringing together researchers from different industries and specialisations to develop and apply new medical technologies and therapies is the focus for the AUT BioDesign Lab - but it also plays a crucial role in introducing students to new research opportunities and ways of working.

BioDesign Lab co-director, Associate Professor David White, says since the lab was established in 2013 it has supported a range of complex projects drawing on expertise from across AUT’s different research disciplines and collaborating with industry and community partners.

Master of Engineering student Bradley Nixon was supported by Aō Air to develop and validate a new proof-of-concept ATMOS facemask technology that has received significant funding and government support, and is set to go on sale to the public.

With support from Surgisplint Ltd and Callaghan Innovation, another Master of Engineering student, Michael Van Wyk, embedded smart technology in the Zero-Cast WX wrist brace system which can provide information on the brace fit and on the user’s mobility exercises, to assist with better tracking of recovery for patients and clinicians.

Some of the BioDesign Lab’s multidisciplinary projects have extended beyond traditional medtech applications.

School of Art and Design senior lecturer James Charlton is working with Jasmin Hitching, a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Engineering student, to develop a programmable robot with sensors and special machine tooling attachments that will be capable of creating sculpture in response to the movements of an artist.

“Traditional education models often compartmentalise learning and fields of study, but projects like this one remove those artificial barriers and pave the way for more adaptive, less prescribed learning which supports new knowledge and discoveries.”

Jasmin says the project has given her valuable problem-solving skills and insight into how different industries tackle the same problem and arrive at different solutions.

“Aside from learning the technical skills involved in communicating with and controlling robots, I’ve got to see the process involved in taking an idea through to a working product.”

BIODESIGN LAB DELIVERS NEW SOLUTIONS

Giving students opportunities to experience marine environments, and get beyond labs and lecture theatres, is an important focus for AUT’s marine science programmes.

“Scientific expedition is a really critical skill. There is a huge amount of planning and logistics involved before you can start to gather data and make discoveries,” says Dan Breen, programme leader for marine biology. “We want to ensure our students develop those skills, in the field, as part of their study.”

Field trips include estuaries, zoos, marine parks and intertidal shores but also extend beyond New Zealand waters.

AUT has cultivated scientific partnerships in the Pacific and has a research station in the Solomon Islands where undergraduate and postgraduate students can undertake fieldwork.

“We’ve seen how valuable the experience is for our students. They come away with a more global outlook, they can carry out research in both temperate and tropical marine environments and they build practical skills that are vital for ecologists.”

Getting to study marine life in the Solomon Islands during his Bachelor of Science is part of what inspired AUT PhD candidate Antony Vavia to pursue postgraduate studies, and he has spent the past year collecting fieldwork data on Mitiaro Island in the Cook Islands.

For students studying marine biology at AUT, the university’s globally respected researchers and research connections also open up exciting opportunities.

Marine ecologist AUT Professor Andrea Alfaro has led major research projects for New Zealand’s aquaculture industry to improve the reproduction and growth of mussels and other commercial shellfish.

Now working with the Cawthron Institute, she has secured a government grant to establish a shellfish culture programme which will see students working with industry on commercial projects.

Associate Professor Dr Kat Bolstad, who heads up the lab for Cephalopod Ecology and Systematics aka “AUT Squid Lab”, has established links with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) giving students access to life changing research experiences. PhD candidate Ryan Howard took part in a scientific expedition to the Chatham Rise and dissected a giant squid aboard the NIWA research vessel Tangaroa.

AUT marine students are also undertaking research in New Zealand and Australian waters thanks to partnerships with organisations including Seafood Innovations in New Zealand and the Australian Blue Economy Collaborative Research Centre.

BEYOND LABS AND LECTURE THEATRES

For students at AUT, one of the three main campuses in Auckland — North, South or City Campus — will become the place they spend most of their time.

“We understand that the physical environment we create on each campus plays a massive role in shaping the experiences of students,” says Dr Tony Lanigan, director of major projects in the Estates Group at AUT.

AUT has made an ongoing commitment to sustainable, contemporary building design that supports positive teaching and learning experiences, and two of its latest projects are also supporting life outside the classroom.

For many students, starting their studies at university coincides with another major milestone: moving out of home.

To ease this transition AUT has commissioned brand new accommodation facilities right next to the City Campus, with housing for more than 695 students in their own studio apartment, including 25 apartments designed for students with special access needs.

The apartment complex has communal recreation and dining spaces, 24-hour security, and on-site staff to support students and facilitate the residential life programme which runs social

events throughout the year. Each apartment has its own kitchenette, bathroom, study desk and chair.

On the North Campus, AUT is looking at developing a central hub or ‘new heart’ for the health sciences and sport and recreation programmes, and has already completed site preparation works.

The project will include a brand new four-storey building with new staff offices, teaching and research spaces, and collaborative social learning spaces including a café and Student Hub. The project also includes the complete refurbishment of an adjacent building and a new connection into the library.

Dr Lanigan says one of the most exciting aspects of the project is that it will be AUT’s most sustainable building to date because of its LED lighting, rainwater harvesting for irrigation and 60% of all water use in the building, high-tech cladding and roofing systems to support lower energy consumption, and a mainly timber structure, resulting in close to ‘embedded carbon neutral’ status.

“A huge amount of time and planning goes into creating adaptable spaces that make a positive contribution to AUT, and give our students and staff a really welcoming, stimulating environment.”

COLLABORATIVE SPACES FOR LIFE AND LEARNING

Launching a business is hard work and many fail to make it past the idea stage, but the CO.STARTERS programme at AUT is boosting the success rate for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Southern Studios director Geoff Holmes says CO.STARTERS and some final-year papers in his Bachelor of Business at AUT were the catalyst for starting his own creative production studio.

“They provided the framework that simplified an extremely complex business landscape, enabling me to not only build my business, but to grow our clients’ businesses as well.”

Geoff opted into the ten-week CO.STARTERS programme at the end of his degree, wanting to build his own business but lacking the right experience.

“I knew I wanted to create something within the production and advertising industry and gave myself two years to make it work. I was super green, hadn’t run a business before, and I was looking for anything and everything to upskill myself so I didn’t fail.”

Geoff, who now runs an award-winning studio, says CO.STARTERS provided valuable mentoring and helped him focus on critical steps including

developing his business plan and honing the company’s point of difference.

CO.STARTERS has also been the launching pad for a VR company, a meal kit business, a food producer specialising in plant-based, allergen and planet friendly products, and a beverage company successfully tackling the Australasian energy drink market with a clean alternative.

Led by programme manager Sabrina Nagel, CO.STARTERS was established at AUT in 2015 and is based on an international programme designed to foster entrepreneurial ecosystems and equip people with the skills to launch a business.

Director of entrepreneurship and innovation, Martin Bell, says the results have been impressive.

“CO.STARTERS has proven to be an empowering foundation for aspiring student entrepreneurs.

“Graduates of the programme leave with the insights and tools they need to take the next practical steps in building a sustainable business. Perhaps most importantly they become part of a growing CO.STARTERS community with a better understanding of how to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.”

That’s why AUT helps new students transition to university life by delivering a wide-ranging orientation programme on campus and online at the start of each semester. Our student accommodation is secure, with specialised staff and security available on-site 24/7. Support for postgraduate studentsThe Graduate Research School provides leadership and support services for postgraduate research students and their supervisors at AUT. “I’ve always been passionate about those experiencing homelessness, and my master’s degree research focuses on homeless people in the face of emergencies and disasters, using Auckland as a case study. When people

in the sector found out I was researching homelessness post COVID-19, all of a sudden I was in working groups with academics around the globe, and

working on real solutions to homeless people’s vulnerabilities to emergencies and disasters. This was all due to my supervisor and his connections within the

The AUT Centre for Non-Adversarial Justice aims to identify and promote various models of justice under the broad banner of non-adversarial justice. The AUT Centre for Private Law facilitates research and debate across the entire spectrum of private law including tort law, contract law, the law of unjust enrichment, property law, equity and private international law. The AUT Centre for Indigenous Rights and Law aims to raise the visibility of legal rights, issues and customary law relevant to the native peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region.

WORLD-LEADING RESEARCH We deliver leading research in a number of areas within Māori and indigenous development, working closely with academics and organisations from around New Zealand and the world. As a postgraduate student you work closely with academic staff who are known as experts in their field – from Māori business and entrepreneurship to Māori media and from Mātauranga Māori to New Zealand history and the Treaty of Waitangi.

“At first I was looking at studying communication studies, but after attending the AUT open day, AUT LIVE, I discovered the Māori media degree, which combined my love for media and the Māori culture. I knew immediately that this was the university degree for me. A favourite highlight of my studies was creating a documentary with my friends on how attitudes towards te reo Māori can hinder its growth. We produced, filmed and edited our documentary over 10 weeks, which was fun and stressful at the same time. I was extremely proud of the project and with the A+ grade we received.”

Minimum entry requirements are generally a successfully completed bachelor’s degree in the same area of study from a recognised university and a recognised English language test that meets the language requirements. You may also be required to provide evidence of relevant work/research experience.

If you’re planning to undertake a thesis, a research proposal will also be required.

If you don’t meet the entry requirements for our bachelor’s degrees, two foundation programmes are available as an alternative pathway into AUT:

• The AUT Certificate in Foundation Studies taught by UP International College NZ, located close to the AUT City Campus

• NCUK International Foundation Year, located at multiple study centres globally

If you successfully achieve University Entrance and meet any additional programme requirements, you can progress into your chosen bachelor’s degree.

Test results shouldn’t be more than two years old. Other recognised tests of English language proficiency may be accepted on a case-by-case basis as agreed by AUT.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

AUT classes are taught in English. If English, Māori or NZ Sign Language is not your first language, you need to prove you have the minimum level of English for your chosen AUT programme.

We need to assess your level of English to ensure you can succeed in your programme. AUT does not accept responsibility if you fail courses because of a lack of competence in English.

For initial teacher education programmes (Bachelor of Education, Master of Teaching and Learning, Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching) visit https://teachingcouncil.nz for the Teaching Council English language requirements.

International students at NZ secondary schoolsIf you’re gaining University Entrance (UE) through NCEA, IB or CIE, you must meet the UE literacy requirements. You can’t replace the literacy requirements with an English language test result. Some AUT programmes have language requirements higher than UE literacy.

Students with qualifications from outside of New ZealandApplying on the basis of a qualification from another country? Use your official results for one of the following tests or qualifications to meet the English language requirements. Results can be up to two years old.

IELTS (Academic)Due to professional registration requirements, IELTS is the required English test for most health science degrees. It’s also the preferred English test for all other AUT qualifications. If you gain UE through a NZ secondary school qualification, you can’t replace the UE literacy requirements with IELTS.

If you don’t meet the English language entry requirements for your programme, AUT’s School of Language and Culture offers certificate and diploma programmes to meet entry requirements for further study at university level.

IELTS required: IELTS 5.5 with no band less than 5.0 for Diploma in English Language and Certificate in English for Academic Study.

AUT International House is the English language school for international students at AUT and is located on the City Campus. International House also offers general English language training.

Scholarships for international studentsIf you live overseas and are considering university study in New Zealand, you may be eligible for AUT scholarships, particularly for postgraduate study. For example, if you plan to enrol in a doctoral degree you may be eligible for the Vice-Chancellor’s Doctoral Scholarships.

Many countries also provide their own scholarship programmes for students to study overseas and you should check the availability of these. The New Zealand Government also offers scholarships for international students to study in New Zealand.

Medical and travel insurance The New Zealand Government requires all international students to have appropriate insurance. Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of the treatment. That is why it is so important that you have medical and travel insurance while studying at AUT.
