The Curriculum Innovation, Design and Development Committee (CIDD) comprises subject matter academic experts from public institutions, industry experts, and practising professionals. The CIDD designs and develops new programmes and reviews current programmes.

The CIDD is an innovative and effective strategy to assemble experts from diverse backgrounds to develop curriculum, where information/feedback/inputs are also factored into teaching and learning and material development. A team of academics (subject matter experts) and

other responsible stakeholders (commerce and industry, government, research organisations, distance learning experts, etc.) deliberate and decide on the structure and content of a programme.

The CIDD meets twice a year in April and September. After the CIDD workshop, a review is undertaken, where necessary, to revise curriculum content, without serious deviation from the accredited outcomes or the level (NQF) of the module and programme. This process ensures that the curriculum is updated, has cutting-edge technology and is globally competitive.

World-Class Institution

The institution’s programmes have been historically driven by demand in the workplace. The National Master Scarce Skills List for South Africa, provided by the Department of Labour as well as the Seta Sector Skills Plan, demands work-based programmes that are geared towards preparing students to find meaningful employment in the ICT, commerce, government and industry sectors.

Work Integrated Learning

Included in the curriculum are compulsory work-readiness skills and work integrated learning programmes requiring appropriate workplace assessments for all students, before awarding qualifications.

Learner Management System

The institution has migrated to the Moodle Student Management System which is also used by major universities in the world. Students can directly access additional learning content from the website.

Benchmarking

An active benchmarking strategy of our key processes, programmes and curricula with other private, public, national, international and trade organisations is carried out in the constant pursuit of excellence and continued improvement.

Relevant Curriculum

Developing and delivering curricula that are in line with industry and employer requirements are supported by an externally represented Senate. In addition, academic faculties and departments provide support to all teaching for learning activities.

Professional management

Teaching and learning expertise on each campus, together with professional management, ensure that the learning needs of students are met and that the quality of teaching for learning, assessment and research is continually improved and consistent at all campuses. Students are provided with a system of nationally managed, standardised learning materials and curriculum which are reviewed and

upgraded annually. Learning materials are also preloaded on Tablet PCs, making them easily accessible.

Interactive Learning

Small and manageable class sizes allow for interactive teaching for learning and provision of strategic supplementary classes in smaller groups, targeting specific needs in student development.

Community Engagement

An effective community engagement (CE) strategy makes campuses more accessible to the communities. Joint projects and use of institutional infrastructure for CE purposes are encouraged.

International ISO 9001: 2015 and OHSAS 18001: 2007 Quality Standards

The institution also holds to the ISO 9001: 2015 and OHSAS 18001: 2007 internationally certified quality standards for the provision of higher education and training, distance and vocational technical studies, professional learning and skills programmes to international organisations and individuals.

All campuses have staff who are responsible for work integrated learning, social and cultural activities and community engagement programmes. Social networks using wi-fi connectivity and Tablet PCs are encouraged and freely available at all campuses.

Academic Infrastructure

The institution has state-of-the-art facilities and highly qualified academic and support staff including a mix of foreign academic professionals who also provide scarce and critical skills.

Employment and Skills Development Agency

The Department of Higher Education/Labour has awarded the status of an Employment and Skills Development Agency (ESDA) to the Institution in all nine provinces.

Articulation of Qualification

The institution’s qualifications are positioned on the National Qualification Framework (NQF) and certain qualifications are also positioned on the new Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework (HEQSF). All qualifications have an occupational content and allow for vertical and horizontal articulation.

Library and e-Library resources

Richfield possesses a substantial academic library collection of over 135 000 textbooks across its 30 libraries nationally. The library subscribes to an increasing number of electronic journals (e-journals), electronic books (e-books), electronic magazines (e-magazines) and electronic newspapers (e-newspapers) from leading academic publishers such as ElsevierScience Direct, Emerald, Springer, World Advertising Research Center (WARC) and Worldwide Information Services – PressReader. Major book publishers such as Cengage Learning, Pearson Education, Wiley, McGraw-Hill, Juta, Oxford and Lexis Nexis provide academic support to the institution. The latest available textbooks are prescribed and kept in the libraries nationally.

Students who register for BSc IT, DIT and DCA qualifications will receive a Proline Voyager Quad Core Laptop with Windows 10. This laptop fully supports all programming languages utilised during the course and comes with a 12month warranty by Pintec. You will also gain access to our world-class campus-based wi-fi, e-libraries and our student learner management system.

All other students registering for a full Higher Education course will receive a FREE Vodacom N8 ten inch Tablet PC which includes a two-year warranty and 8GB of memory, e-libraries and 100mb monthly data valid for 12 months. Each student is able to have FREE unlimited access to the Richfield website and Moodle platform.

The Tablet PC is compact, very lightweight and extremely easy to carry.

Our tablets can easily fit into most backpacks. Each Tablet PC is preloaded with relevant learning material for each student’s course through the Moodle Learner Management System. The learning material also includes global podcasts of experts’ opinions on pertinent subjects and provides online entry to the Integrated Campus Administration System (ICAS) and Moodle for assignments, accounts information and examination results.

Postgraduate Studies

The School of Postgraduate Studies provides support and valuable information pertaining to the Postgraduate programmes. The institution provides disciplinary training and also focuses on developing the Postgraduate student as a researcher. The Postgraduate School offers workshops and seminars on a range of topics from national and international experts in various areas of scholarship.

In 2019, seminars were conducted by Prof Susan Ogletree and Prof Gwendolyn Benson who are renowned scholars and experts in Research, Community Engagement and Leadership from Georgia State University in Atlanta, USA.

Ms Melissa Hathaway also conducted a seminar to all our Postgraduate Students. Ms Hathaway is the former senior advisor to two US Presidents, Mr George W Bush and Mr Barack Obama.

The Bachelor of Business Administration promotes the development of knowledge and skills that are required in all sub-sectors of business management, thus providing opportunities for students to move between the different sectors of the economy.

The Bachelor of Business Administration produces knowledgeable, intellectually skilled individuals who are able to contribute to improved productivity and efficiency within organisations in the public and private sectors. Administrative skills and knowledge are developed.

The Bachelor of Business Administration has been designed to prepare students for administrative leadership roles in business and the community.

One of the programme objectives is to provide students with the perceptual and analytical skills necessary in making

decisions and evaluating policy in business; another is to develop student understanding of the social, economic and regulatory environment of business. The Diploma in Business Administration is a vocational and industry-oriented qualification. The knowledge emphasises general principles, application and technology in the commercial field.

The Diploma in Business Administration provides students with a knowledge base and the ability to apply their knowledge and skills in Business Management.

It also equips them to undertake other more specialised and intensive learning. The programme is intended to provide students with access to the labour market. The Advanced Certificate in Business Administration allows for articulation from the Higher Certificate in Business Administration qualification.

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare students for a career in business or for proceeding to an intermediate level of business management study. This qualification is primarily vocational and industry oriented, with Work Integrated Learning being a key component.

The qualification provides students with the relevant knowledge, cognitive and conceptual tools to further their higher education studies in their chosen field of study. Students may also seek admission to

The Higher Certificate in Recognition of Prior Learning Activities is a vocational qualification at NQF Level 5. The qualification is meant for individuals who already possess a qualification in higher education and preferably have experience in higher education practice. The purpose of this qualification is to develop practitioners who can demonstrate the ability to coordinate RPL activities.

The Higher Certificate in RPLA includes a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component as a requirement for success. The WIL component of the syllabus will be a practical assessment of the learner’s involvement in conducting RPL facilitation of the portfolio preparation and compilation. This qualification is one of the first to be developed in this field.

The institution has introduced online assessments where applicable in tests and exams.

Requirements for Assessments and Supplementary Examinations

Continuous AssessmentsIt is the policy of the institution that there shall be continuous assessments for programmes. The marks awarded in them shall be made part of the final mark and such details shall be provided to the student when required.

Continuous assessments and final examination marks account for a minimum of 40% and 60% respectively for each module. The minimum pass mark per module is 50%.

A supplementary examination is offered to students who:

• Obtain a sub-minimum of 40%

• Missed exams due to illness/family bereavement/accident or other acceptable cause

Note: Students who do not appear for a final examination have only one chance to pass the supplementary examination. Special examinations will be approved by the Deans of the Faculty.

Requirements for Special Examinations

This concession is offered only to students who are in the final year of study.

• Students must have only two modules outstanding to be eligible for a special examination

Requirements for Progressing from One Year of Study to the Next

Students may successfully progress to the next level of study on satisfying the following conditions:

• Passing all modules• Passing a minimum of four modules and

carrying a maximum of two modules

Rules for Carrying Modules• Students carrying modules from one

semester to the next are compelled to satisfy the pass requirements before sitting for the final examinations in the new semester (e.g. BM511 must be passed to attempt BM512 or attempted concurrently)

• No student will be allowed to carry more than two modules at an given time in any semester without the consent of the Dean of the Faculty

Credit Application and RPLStudents wanting to apply for credits or RPL must do so on the formal prescribed application forms.

Attendance and Student Fees• All students will attend lectures. Where

a student does not adhere to this rule without genuine reasons, he/she shall be penalised and subject to disciplinary measures.

• All obligations must be honoured as per the enrollment contract. Students will not graduate if fees are outstanding.

AppealsStudents are allowed to appeal against the following decisions:

• The outcome of the decision maker

• An assessment mark

Procedure for Lodging an AppealThe student shall have the right of appeal against any decision regarding guilt or penalty, and may appeal in writing to the Chairperson of the Appeals Committee within 10 working days of the receipt of notification of the penalty.

Students may continue their courses of study pending the outcome of appeals, but will be required to amend or withdraw their enrollment if appeals are denied.

Student Meetings and RepresentationStudents may meet on the campus provided that they have obtained permission from the Academic Director - Student Affairs. In addition, they must have made prior reservations and obtained permission for venues and the right to invite speakers.
