GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION

SCHOOL PROFILE

Mount Gravatt High School is a co-educational Year 7-12 secondary school located in the southern suburbs of Brisbane. We are an inclusive school of over 45 cultural and ethnic groups represented. Special learning needs are met by our Essential Studies Department (Special Education Program).

Mount Gravatt High School has a strong academic tradition and its motto, ‘Digna Petamus’ (Let us seek worthy things) is central to the school’s vision and values. Supporting the intent of our motto are three components that are evident in all of our school’s operations. These are: 1. Learning and Opportunity: We understand that learning is the primary goal

but we also understand that valuable learning can take place beyond established classroom structures and this is why we value our extracurricular programs, programs of excellence and “Edge” enrichment programs.

2. Pathways: We understand that we have diversity within our student cohort.

Diversity in background and diversity in skills, interests and abilities. We provide a variety of pathways that can cater for these differences.

3. School Community: We understand the value of a connected community.

Mount Gravatt High has worked hard to build an effective three way partnership between the school, the students and parents/carers.

The school is already well equipped with excellent facilities, including the areas of technology, construction and engineering, laboratories, art and iCentre. In 2014, a new $3 million building was purpose built to accommodate our Year 7 students to high school. One Science block was refurbished in 2011 at a cost of $1.25 million. Another $1.35 million was allocated to renovate both the Resource Centre/Library and construct a state of the art Dance Studio. Our school has developed links and partnerships with tertiary institutions with post school student preference for undergraduate entry being those of University of Queensland and QUT. An outstanding feature of the school is its participatory decision making structure based on a School Advisory Council and three Forums (Curriculum, Teaching and Learning; Resource Management; and School Community) as well as a Student Council and Parents and Citizens Association. Mount Gravatt High is proud of its multicultural community and are active supporters of a very successful international student program. However, irrespective of students’ cultural background, all students are expected to meet the school standards in order to provide a positive and safe environment that delivers quality outcomes. Teachers are committed to continuing professional development to be effective in the classroom where every student matters as an individual.

STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME (SRS)

INCLUDING LAPTOP PROGRAM

The school operates a Student Resource Scheme (SRS) where parents/caregivers join the scheme for the hire of a suite of resources. Mount Gravatt High has established a proud record of providing excellent resources for its students and a very high participation and payment rate is historical and continues to be near 100%. We acknowledge the contribution of Government funds which supports this scheme. STUDENT INFORMATION

Student governance is key to ownership and belonging. Junior and Senior students have leadership and mentor opportunities. Junior and senior leaders are cultivated and encouraged and elected democratically to represent the 4 Pillars of our school.

STUDENT COUNCIL

A student representative council body exists within the school. All form classes are represented and staff members assist in its operation. Its broad objectives are: (a) to allow students the democratic right of free speech and representation

in an accepted, orderly manner; (b) to organize social, sporting, cultural and other activities; (c) to raise funds for school improvement.

FORM CLASSES AND ASSEMBLIES

Form classes are comprised of students from all year levels and meet at the beginning of each day for roll marking, daily messages, guidance and support. INTERNET

Mount Gravatt High School has provided students with access to the Internet for educational purposes in order to enhance teaching and learning. The Internet has been introduced to the school to acquaint students with using the World Wide Web for research. Using the Internet brings with it certain rights and responsibilities - both ethical and legal. It is the aim of the school to protect the rights of each student, and to require that each student behaves in a responsible manner.

Students who use the Internet at school must be responsible in the choice of material that they access. Students must follow the school’s guidelines in the materials they access. Failure to do so will result in sanctions under the school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students.

LOCKERS

Senior students are given the highest priority for lockers. Junior students may make application for the issue of a locker at the beginning of the year.

OBSERVANCE OF STATE LAW

Safety is of paramount importance and students are expected to respect and observe state and federal laws as well as Education Queensland and school policies and regulations. Anti-social behaviour is dealt with as such. This includes breaches of cyber laws, wilful acts or possession or use of illicit substances. Breaches of these will result in suspension or suspension with recommendation for exclusion, especially where dangerous objects and/or illegal substances are involved.

ESSENTIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

“Building positive futures”

Staff and students value diversity, mutual respect and ownership of behaviour.

We are proactive, responsive and respectful.

Individual student needs are met through engaging multi-level, flexible and technologically based activities.

We prepare students to meet their current and future needs within the community.

As a team we specialise in working with students with a verified impairment: Autism, Intellectual Impairment and Speech Language Impairment.

Students verified are supported by the Essential Studies Department and receive an Individual Support Plan that focuses on meeting their needs and supporting them

in all areas of their wellbeing, whilst integrating them into the mainstream school as much as possible. Staff work in collaboration with teachers throughout the school to develop the students’ academic programs. Much of the educational support given to students occurs in the regular classrooms with additional aide support. Students have individualised programs which may include being withdrawn from mainstream for assessment and for instruction including literacy, numeracy and life skills. The senior program includes extensive weekly work experience and opportunities for short courses, apprenticeships and traineeships. We plan closely with parents and caregivers. Our programs endeavour to empower students, raise self-esteem and foster independence in every young adult – to `build positive futures’. For more information please call 3291 5222 or email:

Tony O’Keefe [email protected] or Linda See [email protected]

STUDENT SAFETY POLICY

Bullying of other students in any form is not tolerated at our school. The key value at Mount Gravatt High is respect for other people.

All administration are in the playground every break to support the physical and emotional well-being of all students. There are also members of the teaching staff on playground duty every day.

All year 7 students undertake a program at camp to build confidence and self-esteem. There are also regular Year 7 and 8 parades to reinforce our values and expectations in terms of electronic protocols and cyber schooling.

CODE OF CONDUCT

All members of the school community should behave in ways which enhance the good name of the school.

WHAT WE VALUE AT OUR SCHOOL WHAT THAT MEANS IN TERMS OF

YOUR BEHAVIOUR

1. IN CLASS, ON TASK, ON TIME This is your top priority when you come to school each day.

2. BRING WHAT YOU NEED There are lots of different things you need to remember at High School. Jotting them into your Planner will help you.

3. LET OTHERS LEARN Be sure that your actions don’t take

your teacher’s time away from their top priority which is helping everyone in the class to learn.

4. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK Ask yourself.....

Is it true?

Is it kind?

Is it necessary?

5. HANDS OFF This refers to other people and their property.

6. I’M DIFFERENT, YOU’RE

DIFFERENT, YET WE’RE

ALL THE SAME

Students here bring with them a range of backgrounds, religions and ability levels. We are proud of our Social Justice policies.

7. BE YOUR OWN PERSON It isn’t always easy to say NO to your friends. Try to show the courage to do what you know is right.

8. BE A GOOD SPORT Play by the rules in all areas of life.

9. BE PROUD OF YOUR SCHOOL Take care of the school environment. Be aware that, while you’re in our uniform, your actions reflect on everyone.

10. BE PROUD OF YOURSELF Remember, everyone is good at something.

No-one is good at everything.

You can make a difference.

Mount Gravatt High School maintains and annually reviews its Responsible Behaviour Plan. Where expectations are not met, possible strategies include:

Detention during breaks and after school

Communication with parents including telephone calls, letters and interviews

In the event that the matter is not able to be dealt with at the classroom level, it may be referred to the Heads of Departments or the Administration. At this point, suspension (1 to 20 days) or exclusion from the school may result.
