Thank you for your interest in Carleton St Hilda’s Churchof England Primary School.

At Carleton St Hilda’s Church of England Primary Schoolwe believe in providing a high quality of education for allour children within an atmosphere of Christian values,love and care.

We want our children to be happy and successful and weare committed to allowing each individual child todevelop his/her own interests, skills and talents within apositive and supportive environment. We believe thatlearning should be fun, engaging and challenging. This,alongside high quality teaching gives each and everychild the chance they deserve. Staff, Governors,children and parents are workingtogether to drive the school forward.We set ourselves challengingtargets and are workingtirelessly to achieve success.

As a Church school thestrong Christian ethospermeates through allaspects of the curriculum aswell as other areas ofschool life. Christianprinciples and valuesunderpin all of our work aswe prepare children for theirfuture lives. We have createda warm, family environmentwhich nurtures all our children.

This prospectus has been prepared toprovide you with information about ourschool, hopefully giving a clear indication of theethos and work of the school and answering most of yourquestions. ’s Church of England Primary School

General BackgroundInformationCarleton St Hilda’s Church of England PrimarySchool is a Voluntary Aided Primary Schoolwithin the Diocese of Blackburn and catersfor children between the ages of 4 – 11. Theschool accommodates approximately 210children. The number of children admitted ineach year group cannot exceed 30.

The earliest official records show that the schooloriginated in 1680 and was the first school in

Poulton-le-Fylde. The present building is situatedwithin the village of Carleton on the outskirts of

Poulton-le-Fylde and the school moved to this site in1967. The building is well cared for, is in an excellent

state of repair and supports work of high quality.Internally it is aesthetically attractive and intellectually

stimulating with displays of children’s work making aclear statement about our high standards. There is a largeschool hall which we use for Worship, PE/Games activities,Dance and Drama activities. We also use the hall as adining area at lunch times and to provide our BreakfastClub and After School Club.

Outdoor facilities include two hard play areas – one forFoundation Stage and Key Stage One children and onefor Key Stage Two children. There is also a large schoolplaying field which is used for a wide variety of sportsactivities and an enclosed outdoor area for childrenwithin our Foundation Stage. We love to see childrenlearning outside and make extensive use of our groundsincluding our outdoor classroom, conservation area,allotments and willow dome.

Admissions PolicyMaking an applicationApplications for admission to the school for September2016 should be made on line on the common applicationform and submitted to the Local Authority by 15thJanuary 2016. Parents who wish their application to thisChurch school to be considered against the faith criteriashould also complete the supplementary form. If theschool is over-subscribed, a failure to complete thesupplementary form may result in your application for aplace in this school being considered against lowercriteria as the Governing Body will have no informationupon which to assess the worship attendance.

The supplementary form must be downloaded from theadmissions website and then posted to school as a hardcopy.

Letters informing parents of whether or not their childhas been allocated a place will be sent out by the localauthority on 18th April 2016.

A copy of the Admissions Policy and criteria is available onthe school website or from the school upon request.

The Ethos and Valuesof the SchoolCarleton St Hilda’s is a Church of England Primary Schoolwith close links to St Hilda’s Church. The school has adistinctive Christian ethos and character which permeatesall aspects of the curriculum and school life.

We follow twelve core Christian Values of Love, Peace,Hope, Friendship, Respect, Determination, Trust,Compassion, Forgiveness, Faith, Loyalty and Courage.Each of these values are explored within the context ofthe Christian teachings and underpin our daily act ofCollective Worship as well as the curriculum and day today activities within school.

School WorshipEach day our children take part in a daily act of Christianworship which is seen as an important aspect of schoollife. Our daily worship is seen as a special time togetherduring which we are able to promote the Christian ethos

of the school, enhance the children’s spiritualdevelopment and further develop their knowledge

and understanding of the Christian faith. Allchildren and staff participate in worship and

the school often invites visitors to leadworship. Parents are welcome to join

the school when we are celebratingthe main Christian festivals and/or

are having special times ofworship. This includes our

Celebration Assembly heldeach Friday morning whenwe celebrate children’s achievementsboth in and out of school.

ReligiousEducationAs a Church of England School, theReligious Education we provide is in linewith the rites and doctrines of theChurch of England. The school hasadopted the Blackburn Diocesan syllabus,which promotes the Christian faith

through the life of Jesus whilst takingaccount of other World faiths.

Parents have the right to withdraw theirchild from both formal Religious Education

lessons and Collective Worship. However,parents should be reminded that, as a Church

school, the Christian ethos permeates the whole ofthe curriculum and school life.

The Governing BodyOur Governors represent parents, staff, the church andthe local community. They are responsible for the overallrunning of the school. The Governing Body meets at leastonce per term and there are a number of committees thatmeet regularly to discuss issues in more detail. These dealwith staffing, finance, curriculum, buildings and healthand safety.

Pre School ProgrammeDuring the summer term, the school provides a pre schoolprogramme for the children who start school in thefollowing September. The children are welcomed in toschool several afternoons to meet the staff and tofamiliarise themselves with the school buildings, routinesand equipment. A Parents Information Evening is alsoheld in the summer term outlining details of inductionarrangements into school for the children in September.In addition, parents are also offered a home visit, usuallyby the class teacher and teaching assistant. This hasproved beneficial in easing thechild’s transition fromhome to school.

SchoolCurriculum

In order that every child mayreach his or her full potential,

the school provides an excitingcurriculum which is broad,

balanced, creative and progressivein line with national curriculum

requirements. The school curriculum isfirmly based upon the Christian ethos of

the school.

The Early Years CurriculumIn their first year in school, the Reception children followthe Foundation Stage curriculum. A rich variety ofactivities and experiences are provided for the childrenthroughout the different areas of learning.

Key Stage One andKey Stage TwoChildren will access a rich, creative curriculum to inspireand challenge all learners and prepare them for thefuture.

Cross curricular topics enable children to develop skillswhile making real life, meaningful links and engagingwith the wider community.

Foundation SubjectsIn Science, we aim to encourage all children to exploreand investigate the world around them.

Equipping children for tomorrow’s world by teachingthem Computing skills is another essential part of ourcurriculum. Computing is taught both as a discretesubject and also through other curriculum areasacross the school.

Other subjects such as Geography and Historyare taught using a themed approach in eachclass.

MusicMusic is taught in all classes throughout theschool and we seek to develop thechildren’s composing, performing andlistening skills. Children have opportunitiesto learn a range of musical instrumentsfrom peripatetic teachers. In Year 2 thechildren learn to play the guitar as part oftheir music curriculum and in Year 3 thechildren learn to play the recorder as part of

their music curriculum.

EnglishOur aim is to extend children’s ability, confidence andenjoyment of English so that they can communicateeffectively. This is achieved through a balancedprogramme of speaking, listening, reading and writing.Each child takes part in a daily, structured and progressiveEnglish lesson in addition to developing their English skillsin other curriculum areas.

MathematicsWe place great importance on Mathematics and we hopethat your child will develop both an understanding and alove of the subject. Each child takes part in a daily,structured Maths lesson which incorporates directteaching and interactive oral work, both within the wholeclass and with groups. The children are guided through aprogramme of practical and written activities to ensurethat they not only know and understand the essentialelements of the subject but can also apply theirknowledge with confidence and enjoyment to the worldaround them.

Sport and Physical EducationIn Physical Education (PE) we aim to promote thedevelopment and progression of skills ingymnastics, dance, games, athletics and outdooractivities. Children are encouraged to value physicalexercise for health reasons and to develop teamspirit, cooperation and leadership skills.

All children have swimming lessons during their timeat our school. They are taught by a specialist swimmingteacher alongside the school staff.

The school also has specialist coaches from outside schoolto deliver particular aspects of PE to the children. We alsowork with the Wyre and Fylde Schools Sports Partnershipto offer other sporting activitiest ogether with FleetwoodTown Football Club.

Extra Curricular ActivitiesIn addition to the main subjects taught in the curriculumduring lesson time, the school offers a variety of activitiesand clubs on a voluntary basis for children of all ages

which change throughout the year activities for2015/2016 include tri golf, cricket, tennis, football,

netball, athletics, choir, dance, basketball, tag rugbyand hockey.

No charges will be made for any activity whichtakes place within a lesson time which arises asa requirement of the National Curriculum.However, it may be necessary for parents tooffer a voluntary contribution towards someor all of the cost of additional activitieswhich are designed to enhance thecurriculum.

Year 6 ActivityHoliday

Each year all of our Year 6 children areinvited to participate in an Activity Holiday.

Activities undertaken include problemsolving, canoeing, raft building and

orienteering.

School starts: 8.50am

Lunchtime: 12 noon – 1pm

School DinnersSchool dinners are cooked on the premises and a cafeteriasystem allows the children a choice of menu. The mealsprovide a balanced nutritional diet with choices of salads,fruit, yoghurt etc.

Packed LunchesChildren are able to bring a packed lunch from home butwe ask that drinks should be provided either in a plasticcontainer or carton.

UniformThe school has a uniform which we believe encouragesand promotes pride in the school and preventsdiscrimination. All children are expected to wear uniform.

Girls: Green sweatshirt with school logo on or greencardigan, white polo shirt or blouse, grey skirt ortailored trousers. Green and whitegingham/striped dresses may be worn in thesummer.

Boys: Green sweatshirt with school logo on or greenjumpers, white polo shirt, grey trousers.

All children to wear black, sensible school shoes – notrainers allowed.

Sweatshirts with the school logo on can be purchasedthrough the school.

Please mark all clothing with your child’s name.

PEFor PE and activity lessons children need to change intoan appropriate set of clothes. White T Shirt with no logoson, green shorts, plimsolls.

T shirts and shorts are available from the schooloffice. School fleeces are also available from theschool office.

The wearing of jewellery is discouraged inschool for safety and security reasons

and the school is unable toaccept responsibility for lost

items. Earrings and studsfor pierced ears are

consideredunsuitable for PE

and swimmingand must

therefore beremoved.

Parents’ EveningsWe have two formal Parent’s Evenings a year which areusually held in October and February/March time. Parentsare allocated a ten minute appointment time and this isan opportunity for you to talk individually to the teacherabout your child and their progress. In February the children receive a Mid Year Report outlining children’sattainment in line with national expectations as well aseffort in each of the key areas.

In the Summer Term all children receive a written reportin July with progress comments on all National Curriculumsubjects. This report will include results of NationalCurriculum Assessments if your child is in Year Two orYear Six. There is an opportunity for you to come intoschool to speak to the teacher about the report if youneed further information.

HomeworkThere is a homework policy available on request. Thequantity and frequency of homework increases as thechildren move through school. This work will coversuch areas as:

• Learning spellings and multiplicationtables

• Reading

• Extension/consolidation work

• Research work

We feel that it is of vitalimportance that children shouldread at home on a regular basis -DAILY IN MOST CASES - and werecommend parents spend timereading with their children in aquiet relaxed atmosphere. Ahome/school readingprogramme is in operationand further information andadvice on how you can helpyour child is always availablefrom class teachers.

Children in their final year atschool will be set more specifichomework tasks as they preparefor their end of year tests andalso to establish valuable learninghabits for their time at High School.

Staff appreciate parent’s support inensuring that homework is completedand returned to school on the correct day.If you have any queries about your child’shomework, please do nothesitate to contact theclass teacher todiscuss this.

Special EducationalNeedsAt Carleton St Hilda’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) is apriority and we work hard to ensure that all children aremaking progress according to their own abilities.

We have various schemes and procedures in place toensure children are supported appropriately in their

learning.

At times, outside agencies may need to be consultedin order to obtain specialised information andguidance. These may include the schoolnurse or doctor, educational welfareofficer, speech therapist or theeducational psychologist. We workclosely with both parents andother experts to meet the needsof individual children.

There is a school governorwho has responsibility foroverseeing special needs.Our school InclusionManager is Mrs M Barrowand she is always availableto discuss any concerns or

issues.

AccessWe have an accessibility plan to ensure school providesphysical, social and curriculum access to all pupils,including pupils with disabilities. This is in response to theDisability Planning Duties 2002.

We have parking facilities for the disabled on our schoolcar park and the school building itself has disabled toiletfacilities available. The school is all on ground levelallowing access for everyone and our grass and tarmacplay areas are accessible to all.

Future plans to enhance accessibility are in place and willbe implemented when building improvements are madeor if the need arises unexpectedly.

ChildProtectionAs schools have daily, closecontact with children, it ispossible to observe signs ofpossible abuse, failure tothrive, or particular changes ina child’s behaviour.

Parents should be aware that,where it appears to a member ofstaff that a child may have been avictim of abuse of any form, the schoolis required by law under the ChildProtection Procedures to report theirconcerns to Social Services immediatelywithout contacting the child’s parents.

Mrs Wareing is the designated member of staff for ChildProtection.

Although we welcome parents and visitors into school,security is important. All outer doors are fitted withsecure closures and the entrance to school , during theschool day, is through the main front door(again, througha security system.) All visitors must report to the secretaryor Headteacher before entering school, to be signed ontothe premises and issued with a security badge.

Any unknown person on the school premisesduring the school day will be challenged byany member of staff and asked forverification of identity. If identity isnot clearly verified, appropriateaction will be taken, involvingthe police if necessary.

We see our school as anopen, welcoming school,but trust that parents willfeel reassured and seethe reasoning behindapparent restrictedaccess to pupils.

Child SafetyYour child’s safety, whilst in our care at school is alwaysparamount.

No unauthorised person other than the known parent(s),guardian(s) of a child will be permitted access to yourchild during school hours.

Do please let school know if any person/relative is notallowed contact with your child, so that appropriateaction may be taken. You will always be informed ifanyone approaches school regarding your child.

We ask you to collect your child from school if they are tobe absent for a medical appointment.

If parents are late/detained at the end of the school day,please contact school as soon as possible. Children wait atthe school office, in safety, until contact can be made withthe parent and appropriate arrangements are agreed.

PTFAThe school has an active PTFA who organise severalevents each year to raise money for school funds. Wealways give a warm welcome to newcomers, so if youwould like to join or help in any way, please come alongto one of the meetings.

Car ParkingTraffic congestion on Bispham Road is a serious problem,especially at the beginning and end of the school day andwhen school events take place.

It is recommended that children and parents walk toschool, if this is possible, to ease the congestion.

If it is necessary to travel to school in a car, then the accessto school must always be kept clear for deliveries andemergency access. Parents are asked not to park on theschool zig zag lines outside of school or to stop on theyellow lines when dropping children off or collecting atthe end of the school day. It is also requested thatconsideration is given to the residents who live onBispham Road and surrounding roads by not blockingdriveways. Additional parking is available on the CastleGardens Pub car park.

As the safety of your children isparamount to us, it isrequested that parents DONOT use the school carpark before andafter school as thisbecomes heavilyovercrowdedandhazardous.

Road SafetyThe safety of all children is paramount at Carleton StHilda’s and our school actively supports the developmentof a sensible and positive attitude to road usage.

Our older children have the opportunity to take aBikeability Course to give them confidence to ride cyclessafely.

Medicinein SchoolIt should not be necessary to sendmedicines to school. If a course ofantibiotics has to be completed and the child is wellenough to come to school, then a responsible adult maycome to administer the medicine during the day.

If your child requires medicines that do need to be kept inschool, please complete the appropriate Medical Formavailable from the school office. These must be given tothe designated person, usually the class teacher. A copy ofthe school’s medical policy is available by request.

Pastoral Care &BehaviourOur school operates a positive approach to managingbehaviour and discipline.

Very occasionally children may be at risk of harmingthemselves or others around them. If this situation ariseswe will move other children away for safety reasons. If wefeel a child is at risk from harming themselvesstaff will take steps to intervene. We willalways have the child’s bestinterests at heart.

A copy of this policy isavailable on request inschool.

Attendance andPunctualityRegular attendance and punctuality areexpected at all times. Regular attendance andpunctuality helps your child to learn, makeprogress, maintain friendships and to take fulladvantage of the opportunities available tothem. It is the duty of all parents to ensurethat children attend school unless they are ill.

Taking holidays in term time will affect yourchild’s schooling as much as any other absenceand we expect parents to help us by not takingchildren away in school time.

All applications for leave of absence must be made inadvance using the “Request for Leave of Absence Form”available from the school office. Please note that holidaysin term time will not be authorised by the Headteacher.The Local Authority Policy of issuing penalty notices mayalso be used as the school has adopted the Local AuthorityAttendance Policy.

Before and AfterSchool Care

The school operates Breakfast Club andAfter-school Care provision on the site.

Parents are encouraged to takeadvantage of this facility. This isavailable during term-time eachweekday, from

7.30am – 8.50am and

3-30pm until 6.00pm

A session fee is charged forthis facility, although it is a

non-profit making ventureand costs are kept low. The

children are given manydifferent opportunities to play

and join in activities.

Carleton Childcare situated within theschool grounds also offer holiday care

arrangements. Close links are establishedwith Carleton Childcare as part of our pre schoolliaison and induction.

ComplaintsProcedureIf you have a concern about anything wedo you can tell us by telephone, in personor in writing. If any of these are difficultfor you, a friend or adviser can speak tous on your behalf. Most concerns orcomplaints will be sorted out quicklyeither by putting things right or by

explaining the School’s actions to you.

Try to go to the member of staff involved oryour child’s class teacher who will either deal

with your issue or pass you on to someone whois more able to help.

If you have already told us about a concern but arenot satisfied with how we have responded, you may

wish to make a complaint.
