Technology policy seminars for industry, government, and academic leadersventure funding for minority dotcom entrepreneurs sustainability of minority mediacampaigns in cyberspace

3. I am PurpleBschool / iSchool Which one?

Information School, University of Washington, Seattle

2nd PhD cohort in Information ScienceI could think about technology without having to code or focus only on technologyCommittees - learned about new programs, admissions, etc.

Knowledge management I thought many organizations didnt know how to handle information and I could find the one true technology to save them. Ha!

4. I am Doing the Happy DanceI love being a doctoral student!

Qualitative research getting nosy about people

Cognitive Work Analysis informing the design of systems and services in dynamic workplaces by asking questions that reveal the work, the worker, & the organization under constraint. Developed from Scandinavian participatory design.

Knowledge management its not a technology problem its a people problem

4.5. I have an EpiphanyWhere do I fit in?

Organizations not in business school

Society and behavior not in sociology

Technology at work not in a management information systems (MIS) program

How technology changes work and workers not in anthropology

HUMAN INFORMATION BEHAVIOR5. I am not Always the Smartest Person in the RoomTwo big learning experiences:General exam 2 weeks of fear, loathing, & self-doubtWe cant manage knowledgeI should have taken more library science courses Theres a lot to learn!

DissertationLearning to listenWaiting to learn

6. I am CuriousInformation culture of support staff in municipal government and implications for managerial decision-making

How managers use information obtained by support staff in decision-making

Support staff information culture retrieval, storage, search, manipulation, transfer, exchange

How should we think about KM when when the person who searches and retrieves is not the person who will use the information?

Intent suggest knowledge management tools

6.5. Somethings Wrong! These people dont need technology, they need time

To talk to each otherTo think about their workTo record what they do so others can do it laterTo talk to new people and widen their networksTo stop eating at their desks

7. Well, it Looks like I AM the Smartest Person in the RoomIf I had framed the study around the technology, I would have missed EVERYTHING that was really important. By asking questions that were people and process-focused, by listening, by waiting to hear the individuals story about their information behavior at work, I learned:

when to shut upyou dont know anything about the work if you dont know about the organizationI was right to study support staff (the understudied) and not managersCognitive Work Analysis aligns the planets

8. I am at SLISIdaho

Experiences in new programs at UM and UW made it appealing to help shape SLIS.
