Pros and Cons of Tankless vs Conventional Hot Water Heaters The first automatic, storage tank-type gas water was invented by Edwin Rudd around 1889 and became the standard, which has been refined into what we use today. The Pros of conventional water heaters are: 1. Conventional water heaters have a lower initial cost for the unit. It can cost half as much as a tankless unit, depending on which model you choose. 2. Because, in most cases, you will be replacing an existing water heater, all of the plumbing is already in place, which saves money on the installation costs. 3. Conventional water heaters are relatively inexpensive to replace and are less complicated. Less complications means less risk of encountering any snags. Cons: 1. Higher utility bill: Conventional units heat and reheat water at a pre-set temperature regardless of your water needs. This increases your utility bill, especially during the winter months. 2. Bigger and harder to place: They occupy more room and cannot be placed outside, unlike a tankless unit, which can mounted on the exterior of your building. 3. They can run out of hot water: Ever been the last person in the shower? It’s a tough way to start a day. 4. Shorter life: Conventional units last approximately 10-15 years. This means you will need to replace them more often than the tankless variety. The first “tankless” water heater was invented in London, in 1868, by Benjamin Waddy Maughan. The “Geyser,” as it was known, would gravity feed cold water down through pipes that were heated by a burner at the bottom with the water flowing into a tub or sink. The Pros of the tankless water heater are: 1. It saves money in the long run. According to studies, “homes that use 150 liters or less of hot water daily can see a 24%–34% energy efficiency over conventional water heaters.”
