The ScarfThe scarf is used as a link between the detective and the protagonist. It helps the audience to understand the story and to know that the detective is investigating what has happened to the girl. The scarf is a signifier to the audience. This could also relate back to Bowlby’s attachment theory as the audience becomes attached to the characters, and at this point of the opening sequence they will understand that something bad has happened to her.

The MugThe mug is used to signify the detective trying to stay awake. This is also representing the importance of the detectives work. The mug empties during the different shots again, and then refills again. This is showing how the detective is determined to figure out what he is working on and also shows the stress of the situation.

The grey coatThe coat itself is showing how the girl is covering herself up. The grey of her coat is solid and stable, creating a sense of calm and composure, relief from a chaotic world. It’s signifying how isolated herself from the world.
