Propp analysed the used of characters and their roles in various folk and fairytales. He found all narratives share the same structure with the same characters, believing that characters and their actions shape the narrative.
They are divided into 8 roles
VillainThe antagonist in the narrative, the one who struggles against the Hero.
HeroThe protagonist in the narrative, usually seeks something.
DonorPrepares/provides the Hero with an agent/object.
PrincessDamsel in distress/ the reward for the hero, usually the prize for the Hero’s quest.
Princess’ FatherRewards the hero, usually by attempting him to marry his daughter.
False HeroClaims and portrayed to be the hero but is not, usually reaps what he sows.
HelperAids the hero, usually in his or her quest.
DispatcherSends the hero in the right direction.
