a) Development of the site would have minimal detrimental local ecological impact.
The majority of the site is arable or improved grassland and is of low ecological value. The mature hedges should be retained where possible or replaced by planting native species-rich hedgerows elsewhere on site. The trees along Spring Lane should be retained and incorporated into any development plans.

b) Development of the site would result in some adverse local ecological impact but there is scope for mitigation.
c) Development of the site would result in detrimental ecological impacts.

4 FURTHER INFORMATION Brief Site Description The site consists of a series of arable fields and improved grasslands separated by hawthorn hedges. There are oak trees along Spring Lane on the north east edge and crack willows adjacent to a drain that crosses the site. Additional comments / information Figure 1 shows the Phase 1 habitat map for the site. Figure 2 shows the areas with significant ecological value. This site was surveyed at a sub-optimal time of year, however due to the habitats present this is not considered to have significantly affected the results of this survey. The data search revealed that water voles have been recorded at the nearby golf course, however this is separated from the site by the busy A61.

Site Description
The site is located on the northern edge of Staincross. There is housing to the south and Warren Lane follows the western boundary. There are fields to the north and Wakefield Road is to the east, with a golf course behind.
The site consists of a series of arable (Photo MPW2A.4) and improved grassland fields separated by hedges, fences or lines of scrub. Spring Lane is located along the north-east edge and is a footpath with no vehicle access. There is a fence along the boundary with the arable field and a relatively young hedge along the opposite edge. Along the path verges are silver birch (Betula pendula) trees and some large oaks (Quercus sp.), along with saplings, bramble (Rubus fruticosus), bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) and some rosebay (Chamerion angustifolium) and nettle (Urtica dioica) (Photo MPW2A.3).
The improved grasslands are located to the west of the site (Photos MPW2A.1 & 2) and are dominated by grasses, with small amounts of species such as dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), chickweed (Stellaria media) and cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris). A well-established hedge separates the two western grass fields from the arable fields. It is dominated by hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), with occasional elder (Sambucus nigra) and small amounts of holly (Ilex aquifolium). The hedge has thick base stems and has been layed in the past. It crosses a drain running west to east through the centre of the site and there are three large crack willow (Salix fragilis) trees nearby (Photo MPW2A.5). The drain is narrow and at the time of the survey was holding a few centimetres of water, but may be dry during the summer months. Towards the west it is surrounded by tall ruderals and bramble. As it flows east it is a much lower level than the surrounding land and has steep almost vertical banks. The drain is shown on the OS map as completely crossing the site from Warren Lane to Wakefield Road, but it is not clear if it holds water for its full extent.
The other internal hedges throughout the site are dominated by hawthorn. The hedge along Wakefield Road has thick stems and has been layed in the past. Rabbit burrows were visible at the base of this hedge.

Heritage Assessment
Site EC1 Land to the North of Staincross Common
Archaeology: Amber/Green, site policy required
SUGGEST ARCHAEOLOGY SITE POLICY: Archaeological remains may be present on this site therefore
proposals must be accompanied by an appropriate archaeological assessment (including a field
evaluation of necessary) that must include the following:
Information identifying the likely location and extent of the remains, and the nature of the
remains
An assessment of the significance of the remains
Consideration of how the remains would be affected by the proposed development
Setting: Green – No Adverse Impact
Assets Potentially Affected and Significance:
The nearest designated assets likely to be affected are the listed milestone 230m north of the site on
Wakefield Road, and Windhill Gate Farm 700m to the west.
Contribution of proposed allocation site and degree of harm:
Due to the physical separation distances and the fact modern development entirely bounds the
landscape setting to the south of both assets the contribution is low / negligible. As such,
corresponding potential for harm is also low / negligible.
