1PROPOSED “HELP FONTAL FIRST” IN Jacmel, Haiti

Fontal Jacmel, Haiti

IntroductionFontal village is located approximately 60 miles east of Jacmel Haiti, and is composed of three villages: namely Dlo Genin, Terre noire, and Nan Citron.

Fontal is estimated to have 3,000 people, less than 1,200 households with an average of about 9 persons per household and 1,650 adults in total. The entire Local council has about 250 households.

The purpose of Positive Impact Ministry International

The purpose of Positive Impact Ministry International is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who do not know him in Jacmel Haiti.I consider myself as a Joseph, God sent me to America to think about my people who are living in inhumane circumstances. In the rural area of Haiti, people cannot even comprehend what it feels like to taste ice cream. They are completely destitute and without the necessary means to provide a good healthy meal for themselves.I love Haiti, and especially “Jacmel” the third city in the country.  Jacmel is known for its art, artisans, and its Caribbean hospitality. On the way to Jacmel city from the airport, all along the national route you can admire the small houses with all kinds of colorful paints or advertisements; as well as the smiles on the faces of the children observing the buses as they wisp by wishing they were on them.

Back ground of Fontal Jacmel, In Haiti.Poverty in Fontal is a major problem that is manifested by low levels of household productivity, poor income, food insecurity and reproductive wastage. This has led to poor health, low levels of education, poor housing and a decreased life expectancy to 48 years.

Over 58% of Haiti’s population lives in rural areas where agriculture is a major contributor to their livelihoods. In addition, the agriculture sector contributes 36.4% of the national GDP as of the financial year 2005/2009 before the earthquake. The agriculture sector therefore presents a great opportunity for poverty reduction because it employs about 77% of the total active labour force in the rural areas. Hence the centrality of agriculture sector in improving livelihoods of the poor. Malnutrition and food insecurity remain significant issues, over 43% of deaths of children less than 5 years in Haiti are attributed in partly to poor health care, malaria and malnutrition. In the rural of Jacmel, less than 15% of people have access to safe water, dirty water is a major cause of ill health. As a result therefore, this community development programme seeks to bridge knowledge and capacity gaps in the areas of health, water and sanitation and sustainable agriculture.

JACMEL PROJECT

Positive Impact Ministry will most likely work in the areas of:

1. Giving care spiritually and physically in the rural cities. These people cannot afford to buy a French/creole Bible because they live beneath the cost of $0.75 a day; so, one of my goals is to collect 2000 French Bibles for the next trip. The little change they do manage to scramble together can only purchase either food or pill for pain because it is extremely hot during the day. At times the heat is unbearable, especially because the house they live in is covered with Zinc roofing. They have no fans not to mention air conditioning which makes matters worse. As you should imagine headaches, migraines, and fevers are common in their everyday life.

2. It is a desire for me to feed them every first Sunday of the month. Some of them come from miles away just to attend the church services and the primary means of transportation for them is walking.

Any morsel of food given to them is welcomed and appreciated; it does not have to be much e.g. Rice, spaghetti, coffee and bread.

3. Another goal is to provide them with medical assistance. While I was over there this past June 2009, it was a painful awakening and a reality for me to witness a young 6 year old boy who was constipated for five days because of the lack of eating foods with enough fruits, vegetables and fiber, and all that was needed to rectify the problem was a spoon of magnesia. If a child is sick, in order to get care the parents have to walk to the clinic. Most of the time there are no doctors or nurses available by the time they arrive at the clinic.

This is very disheartening, considering that the parent had to travel for about five hours walking with the sick child just to get to the clinic. As a last resort the parents would have to return back home and give the child a home remedy which is herbal medicine. Now imagine the same scenario for the elderly, pregnant women who are in a complicated condition needing to give birth.

Malnutrition is one of the main killers for the children and I suspect that many of the adults are suffering from acid reflux, hypertension, diabetes and muscle and joint pains. There are also cases where people are taking Pepto-Bismol for Asthma, and go to the voodoo priest for a hernia. You will also find people who do not have anything to take when they have a case of diarrhea.

Haiti has one Medical University; during the earthquake this building collapsed along with 85% of the students who died including the Dean of the school. According to the latest statistic on health care in Haiti, it is severely critical. We are talking about 2,000 doctors for almost ten million people, and only 80 students graduate per year from the Medical University.

The picture below is a happy 14 year old girl named Marie-Claire. After my last trip in June 2009, I had decided to send her to see a doctor for a checkup because I noticed that her hair was not growing. After her visit to the doctor he had prescribed for her to start taking some multi-vitamins; by the time I went back in November 2009 her hair had grown in. Just take a look at her on the left with a little hair in the front of her head, and the results after she started taking the vitamins on the right. All this was done for less than $60 US.

The rural area where I have been working has one medical center; the doctor only comes to the area every Tuesdays, and Thursdays. If you miss him/her during these two times of the week, you have to travel from Fontal to Jacmel city. That’s about 13 hours walking on a hilly up and down gravel road.

It is serious!!!

So far about 50 are the living witness. If you want to do something in the Kingdom of God, then I suggest you get involved with mission work and the ministry of caring for God’s people. When we begin to do this, then I believe we get into the mind and heart of God because we begin to care about the things that God cares about.

Sources of livelihood:

The main source of livelihood used to be agriculture, which is mainly the growing of food crops like potatoes, upland corn and fishing with cheap

equipments (sold off for cash). Fontal is the food basket that feeds the people in the village. The land sizes range between 5-10 acres and most of it

is largely low income family holdings

Statement of the problemThe majority of the village engages in subsistence agriculture leaving no means of earning money to purchase high quality protein to supplement the diet. Hunger results in high susceptibility to disease, lack of energy, and in extreme cases lack of full development of the mind and body.

Therefore, this project seeks to provide basic elements of food security clean water, health and hunger to Fontal Jacmel village, in Haiti. The main objective of this project is to improve the livelihoods of the community through increase awareness on the causes of the problems and to design mechanisms of reducing the burden of poverty but also provide them with some of the basic tools to lift themselves out of poverty.

VisionA poverty, disease and hunger free community that is able to sustainable manage its natural resource base for improved livelihoods

MissionTo improved livelihoods through practicing basic community health care, and also, provide a sustainable soil and water conservation technologies.

Overall objectivesI. To increase awareness in Sustainable agriculture: (Soil and water conservation, and livestock)

II. To increase the communities health and environment by preventing diseaseIII. To address the water and sanitation through rainwater harvest and protection of well springs

JACMEL PROJECT

1.0: Health – Rainwater harvest and protection of well springs

Statement of the Problem

This village has limited sources of safe water. There are two types of water sources namely spring and boreholes. Residents have to move an average distance of about a kilometer to reach the water source which is not clean. The easy to protect some kids, the parents have the option to test the water before they are giving it to their kids. Technique: "If it is clean, nothing will happen to them. When the water is not clean, I will get diarrhea."

After the earthquake, they were a Cholera outbreak in almost everywhere in Haiti. Different NGO and missionaries doctors and some governments bases have been a public campaign to teach people how to drop a small quantity of bleach into their buckets to purify the water by chlorinating it, no one has been able to instruct families on what to do if they have no money to buy the bleach. So some Haitians decide to use lemon."

Two Churches here in Georgia First Baptist of Villa Rica, and First Tabernacle of Carrollton are putting together a water pump to provide water for less than 1000 people. It has been a blessing until end of March this year the water pump was broken. And that is main concern right now; because the Hurricane season is right here in the corner. With no clean water that can be a major issue.

Project Objectives

1. To protect 3 spring wells 1 from each zone.2. To rehabilitate the primary school water harvest system.3. To Establish domestic water harvesting for 6 selected homes, 2 from each zone4. Establish rain water harvest at 1 secondary school 5. To sensitise communities in basic community health care

With no water life is miserable, you and I know it. When I first moving to my new address and, I remember that just by taking another week before I transfer my water bill under my name they had to cut the water around 5:00 in the afternoon. It was a miserable night for us. Have to run to Kroger to refill 16 gallons of water to bath, and drink. Picture about 2000 kids who living in a chronicle malnourish situation, and have to deal with diarrhea, malaria fever, cholera, tuberculosis, and all kind of related to water disease.

I am here to cry out for help on their behalf. God uses their poverty to train your faith, and your giving mind to help your brothers/sisters who are in needs. In Haiti, parents are using kids to fetch for water hours away from their homes.

2.0: Health- Malaria Prevention

Statement of the Problem

100% of the village suffer from two to three episodes of malaria a year. Attacks of malaria prevent children from attending school up to two weeks a year and prevent adults from working in the fields or at casual labour. Other serious diseases are Leprosy, Cataracts, Trachoma, and Tuberculosis.

Project Objectives

1. To sensitize the villagers to prevention of malaria transmission using mosquito nets and to teach the practices that result in mosquito abatement by removing standing water and cutting brush near the homes.

2. To provide long-lasting, insecticide treated mosquito nets to the villagers for the prevention of transmission of malaria.

Project Target group

Entire village, but specifically women, youth and children.

3.0: Health and Environment– High Efficiency Stoves

Statement of the Problem

98.5% of the Fontal Jacmel community use fuel Wood as primary fuel for cooking. In many homes three stones constitute a cooking stove, inefficiently burning wood generate a lot of smoke inside the home. Jacmel is an area that facing landslide, river overflow, and storms. The smoke creates health problems particularly for the women that are doing the cooking and children present, the gathering of wood can take up to several hours a day and results in the deforestation of the area nearest the village.

Project Objectives long terms and short terms

1. To Train 5 youths and 5 women from each of the 3 zones in construction of fuel wood energy saving stones.2. To provide energy efficient stoves to each family in the village that burn up to 70% less wood (Rocket Stoves)

Project Target group

Entire village, but specifically women, youth and children.

Project Strategy

3. Build the stoves locally and train the youth to learn to make them - this will spread the idea to other villages where the project may not cover - the beneficiaries will be encouraged to provide the clay needed where feasible

4. Stoves will be distributed to all families in the village and all women will receive training in how best to use the stoves.

Work plan and BudgetObjective Specific activities Responsible

1. To Train 30 villagers in construction of energy saving stoves.

1. Identify and conduct training for 10 from each zone in cook stove construction

4.0: Hunger: Soil and Water Conservation, and Livestock Integration

Statement of the Problem Majority of the Fontal Jacmel community is engaged in subsistence agriculture. Over the years of intensive cultivation, the soils in the village have been depleted, leading to poor yields and soil erosion. Poor roads and inaccessible markets provide less return to the farmers, thereby failing to provide their families with quality protein to supplement the diet. Hunger results in high instances of diseases, lack of energy and in some cases lack of full development of mind and body.Project Objectives

1. To provide improved livestock to 30 selected families for improved household nutrition and income2. To sensitize the village to water and soil conservation and livestock management.

Project Target GroupThis project will directly support 30 families. Through these families, the whole village will benefit from the products of the project.Project Strategy

1. Identify and use existing Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) for implementation and training.

2. Using the existing village political structure families in each of the 3 zones will be organized in groups and leaders elected.3. Each group in a zone on a selected day will be trained looking after the stock and simple business practices.4. Each group in a zone will select 10 families to be the first beneficiaries. The selected families will construct the shelters for the animals

with the guidance of a veterinarian.5. The animals shall be allocated to the three zones equally. The boar male goats shall be used to breed with existing female goats to improve

the stock. The 30 layer cocks shall also be used to fertilize the existing hens to improve the production of eggs.6. The leaders will meet every month to review and share ideas.

School Construction Project

Project Implementation

In order to help them to grow spiritually, we are in process to build a church in the community. That church will be also available as shelter during a natural disaster. That building will hold 300 people.

Accomplishment

May 2010, we made some provisions to help them with the construction process. We bought them:

1 Donkey, 4 hammers, 4 shovels, 4 Ames true tempers, Gloves. With God’s provision, through two great constructions team from Villa Rica under the umbrella of First Baptist Church, and First Tabernacle of Carrollton today the Church is getting to complete. Pictures are available on the website: www.jacmeltelevision.com

We are moving forward with a School 2013

Immediate Actions Mission 2010-2015

International relief agencies were gearing up for a huge rescue mission. People were getting a handle on the extent of the damage–buildings leveled, people buried in the rubble, bodies stacked in the streets.

1. We need to act concerning the hunger: before the earthquake, people in Jacmel were feeding themselves with corn, rice, and plantain. They normally got their food from their farm. Today, their farms are critically damage, and the soil no longer produce the same like before

In order to get food they have to go all the way to the city to buy food supply, and what makes matters worse is that there are no stores in the community and the food is very expensive to purchase.

2. We need to act concerning the sickness: before the earthquake, people were already facing challenges with all kinds of diseases. Tuberculosis, typhoid, malaria, hernia, prostates, and malnutrition.

3. We need to act concerning their faith: before the earthquake, people typically would run to the church for prayer or help. Today, due to the situation, I believe there are two types of people who are attending the churches; some who are faithful members and some who are attending out of their emotions. I think it is important to try to keep that spirit of revival going that they have been experiencing since after the earthquake. I am pretty sure that some would probably return back to voodoo worship, but I think we need to try to glean all that we can from the present harvest (strike while the iron is hot).

What does it takes to help them? The people in the country are not completely aware of the full extent of the situation due to a lack of electricity. I made two to three trips a year with the permission of my wife and my 6 years old daughter just to encourage them, to let them know that there is still hope and that God has not given up on them. Jesus is on the way, and it is time to share the gospel. We need to share the gospel to people who are cut off from the world because of a lack of electricity. Therefore they don’t have televisions and only a small few might have a radio. This makes it difficult for them to be able to tune in to the news and be in the know. To inform them of the perilous times we are living in (Matthew 24), but unfortunately it takes money to do ministry; most of the trip I have to sacrifice my paycheck to be able to go. Oh how I wish this was not the case.
