PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 328 - 1 Sep 2001 ■ In an effort to curtail soaring prescription drug expenditure in Canada, federal Health Minister Allan Rock has proposed making cost effectiveness a criterion determining whether a new drug is reimbursed by government drug plans, reports the Lancet. Many new drugs, he says, are far more costly than their predecessors and yet only marginally more effective. In the 15 years to date, spending on prescription drugs in Canada has risen nearly 350%, according to the Canadian Institute of Health Information. The proposal has not been well received by pharmaceutical manufacturers; they say that such a move will stifle innovation. Rock hopes that a new approach to drug approvals will be adopted in 2002.
