SCAREDY CAT

Scaredy cat is taking the characteristics of a stray kitten, abandoned by its mother. Therefore when approached by strangers will run away. Using motion and sound sensors, arduino will sense when a human approaches. Upon the arrival of a person scaredy will run away and hide. However not all hope is lost, there is also a camera installed and over time scaredy cat will learn to recognise faces and will begin to respond to kind voices and familiar faces.

The goal for this concept is to create an emotional bond between the user and the digital almost as if it existed in the physical world. Initially the cat will sit in one spot watching as people walk by but if anyone approaches too suddenly he will run away and hide behind a bush. Still peering out so he doesn’t lose the audience. With some coaxing he will slowly come out from behind the bush. Was also thinking of using toys/food to reinforce a positive or negative response. Eventually the cat will become familiar with the person and will come out to ‘play’ when he detects you. However when someone new approaches scaredy cat will hide again.To extremely negative actions/loud noises scaredy cat will snarl at the user.

The precedent for this concept is the wefeelfine.org website. A website compiling thoughts from various blog sites, categorising them into specific words.

sVariation 1The idea for this concept came to me as I was walking down the street and as people passed me I caught snippets of their

conversations. So with arduino and strategically placing sensors, they will capture words from conversations, compiling them into a piece of living art on Cuba St; transcribing the sounds into letters. The art a reflection of the people of wellington,

forever changing and over time archiving the day-to-day words. The more often a word is used, the larger it will appear on the wall.

Variation 2Still using the idea of capturing a piece of the people of Wellington, using other sensors to compile information such as

velocity and amount of traffic passing through Cuba.

Variation 3Using humidity, light, wind and temperature sensors, arduino will compile this information into a working art relaying weather

information through visual art.

concept threeSURPRISE

Variation 1

This third concept was born from I board game I used to play as a child, Don’t Wake Up Daddy. The game was based on an element of surprise. With a motion sensor, the eyes of a portrait will follow a user but if caught staring at the picture too long will scream. The moving picture idea was also inspired by the portraiture in the Harry Potter series. The purpose of this art is to surprise the viewer.

For a more subtle variation, the portrait of the character has its eyes closed. Using something to make a viewer want to look at the image at close proximity, such an object moving behind it’s head, and with the arduino and a thermo sensor, when it detects the viewer getting really close the character will suddenly open its eyes.

Variation 2

Also using the motion sensor and moving art, the second variation is an inspiration from the video ninja cat and also the toy story series. Using the motion sensor, the image will move when it detects that the user isn’t looking at the im-age, freezing when someone looks at it.
