When creating new positions you never know if you have the right title and job
description to meet the goals and objectives of the college and program until the position
starts. I do not feel that in the First Year Experience Model that we are creating that my
position is being utilized to the fullest. The greatest resource that an educational
institution has is human capital. We need to design this position where we are
maximizing the fullest potential of all key players in this model. By doing this you will
have very positive and effective results.
The Student Success Specialist is it is written is an administrative position that does not
allow one to teach. In order for the First Year Experience Program to thrive the
facilitator of the program needs to be able to teach SDV Courses. One of the pitfalls of
the program is that the college does not have a cohort of students designated to move
through the program. During research most colleges creates learning communities for
First Year Experience program and move the students through co-curricular and
extracurricular activities through the learning communities. The success of this position is
hinges on the person having access to students. The most convenient way for the Student
Success Specialist to gain access to students is by teaching SDV Courses.
This position should be upgraded to an administrative faculty position to maximize the
full benefit of this position. If this position is upgraded to administrative faculty then this
position can teach multiple sections of SDV. This position can be assigned an academic
advising caseload of First Year Experience students. Probably should consider the name
of Student Success Advising Specialist and the classification should follow the Academic
Advising Specialist and Counselor job descriptions.
Below you will find a chart outlining duties of the Student Success Advising Specialist,
copy of a job description, and copy of the Student Success Specialist job description.
