Property values and wireless sites

Smart communities plan for mobileMobile technology is essential for our lives but the nation’s wireless infrastructure is under pressure to keep pace with consumer demands for faster data speeds, more coverage and new services. At the same time, communities are looking to smart technology to feed their economic development while realizing cost savings and efficiencies. Wireless infrastructure, like roads, sidewalks, sewers and cable, enable businesses and communities to flourish.

Meeting wireless demand requires infrastructureAmericans are rapidly abandoning landlines in favor of mobile phones — 51% now live in wireless-only homes while only 6.5% of homes are landline-only, making wireless coverage at home paramount for safety and convenience. 1

911 wireless services need infrastructureMobile phones play an important role in personal and public safety. Mobile connectivity can be a lifeline for people in need and first responders. Enhanced or E911 seeks to improve the accuracy and reliability of wireless 911 calls and this will require network upgrades and coordination among public safety agencies, wireline and wireless carriers, and equipment manufacturers.

Wireless networks need coverage and capacityDemand for mobile services shows no signs of slowing. Consumers are using more wireless data than ever before for texts, videos, web searches, and photos. To address demands, wireless networks need to be constantly updated and modernized.

Wireless technology: building block for economically vibrant communitiesAs demand explodes, mobile networks must expand to handle current coverage and capacity needs and prepare for 5G wireless networks. 5G is expected to provide speeds that are 10 times faster than our current 4G connections and will help to create 3 million new jobs and contribute approximately $500 billion to the economy.

“Every industry will be positively impacted by the power of 5G and it will enable our cities to deploy technology to be smarter and more efficient.”2

Does your home have a strong signal?“Today, (home) buyers want to know about the home’s technology. They want to hear about cell service and Internet, not cable and telephone.”

Multiple factors determine property values“The argument that property values are affected by wireless sites (positively or negatively) has very little documentation other than anecdotal sources. City staff is aware of arguments on both sides of this issue.”

Coverage vs. CapacityCoverage and capacity is like a city bus route. The bus may have a route that allows you to go all over town - that’s the coverage - but if the bus only holds fifty people and a hundred people want to ride then there’s not enough capacity. Same thing goes for mobile service.
