Read carefully before attempting to assemble, install, operate or maintain the product described.Protect yourself and others by observing all safety information. Form 5S0000 ®

DescriptionDayton bench grinders are equipped with a totally enclosed ball bearing motor.Armature assembly is dynamically balanced for smooth operation. Motor housing iscompact so long pieces of work can press against both wheels without touchingthe motor frame. Removable wheel guards allow for easy changing of wheels. Toolrests are adjustable for wheel wear and angle grinding. Grinders come completewith spark guards, safety eyeshields and dust collection hose.

2. Do not use power tools in dangerousenvironments. Do not use powertools in damp or wet locations. Donot expose power tools to rain.

3. Work area should be properly light-ed.

4. Proper electrical plug should beplugged directly into properlygrounded, three-prong receptacle.

5. Extension cords should have agrounding prong and the wires ofthe extension cord should be of thecorrect gauge.

6. Keep visitors at a safe distance fromwork area.

7. Keep children out of the work place.Make workshop childproof. Use pad-locks, master switches, or removeswitch keys to prevent any uninten-tional use of power tools.

TOOL SHOULD BE MAINTAINED

1. Always unplug tool prior to inspection.

2. Consult manual for specific maintain-ing and adjusting procedures.

3. Keep tool clean for safest operation.

4. Remove adjusting tools. Form habitof checking to see that adjustingtools are removed before turningmachine on.

5. Keep all parts in working order.Check to determine that the guardor other parts will operate properlyand perform their intended function.

6. Check for damaged parts. Check foralignment of moving parts, bindingof moving parts, breakage of parts,mounting and any other conditionthat may affect a tool’s operation.

UnpackingCheck for shipping damage. If damagehas occurred, a claim must be filed withthe carrier immediately. Check for com-pleteness. Immediately report missingparts to dealer.

BE PREPARED FOR JOB

1. Wear proper apparel. Do not wearloose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings,bracelets or other jewelry which mayget caught in moving parts ofmachine.

2. Wear protective hair covering to con-tain long hair.

3. Wear safety shoes with non-slip soles.

4. Wear safety glasses complying withUnited States ANSI Z87.1. Everydayglasses have only impact resistantlenses. They are NOT safety glasses.

5. Wear face mask or dust mask if oper-ation is dusty.

6. Be alert and think clearly. Never oper-ate power tools when tired, intoxicat-ed or when taking medications thatcause drowsiness.

1. Keep work area clean. Cluttered workareas and work benches invite accidents.

KNOW HOW TO USE TOOL

1. Use right tool for job. Do not forcetool or attachment to do a job forwhich it was not designed.

2. Disconnect tool from power whenchanging accessories such as grind-ing wheels, buffing wheels and thelike.

3. Avoid accidental start-up. Make surethat the switch is in the off positionbefore plugging in.

4. Do not force tool. It will work mostefficiently at the rate for which itwas designed.

5. Keep hands away from moving partsand grinding surfaces.

6. Never leave a tool running unat-tended. Turn the power off and donot leave tool until it comes to acomplete stop.

7. Do not overreach. Keep proper foot-ing and balance.

8. Never stand on tool. Serious injurycould occur if tool is tipped over.

9. Know your tool. Learn the tool’soperation, application and specificlimitations.

10. Use recommended accessories.Understand and obey all safetyinstructions supplied with accessories.The use of improper accessories maycause risk of injury to persons.

11. Do not over tighten wheel nut.Replace cracked wheel immediately.Use only flanges supplied with thegrinder.

12. Adjust distance between wheel andtool rest to maintain 1/16” or less gap.

13. Handle the workpiece correctly.Whenever possible, use tool rest tosupport workpiece during grindingoperation. Turn tool off if it jams.

14. Always use guards and eyeshields.

15. Clean grinding dust from beneathtool frequently.

AssemblyParts to be fastened to the unit shouldbe located and accounted for (See Listand Figure 1).

IMPORTANT: Do not attempt assemblyif parts are missing. Use this manual toorder repair parts.

TOOL REST ASSEMBLY

1. Place tool rest (D) over tool restbracket and secure in position with5/16” flat washer (E) and 5/16-18 x 1”knob (F).

2. Attach tool rest bracket to the bot-tom of the left wheel guard usingone 3/8-16 x 3/4” hex head bolt (A)and one 3/8” flat washer (B). Makesure that the slot of the bracket islocated over the raised boss on theguard. Tighten bolts finger tight.

3. Position tool rest so that distancebetween tool rest and grinding wheelis less than 1/16”. Reposition angle oftool rest if necessary. Secure all knobsand bolts.

4. Mount right tool rest in a similarmanner.

EYESHIELD ASSEMBLY

1. Attach spark guard (M) to left wheelguard using 3/8-16 x 1/2” knob (N),3/8” flat washer (B) and 3/8” lockwasher (K).

4. Locate eyeshield in desired positionfor protecting operator and secure allknobs and bolts.

5. Mount right eyeshield assembly in asimilar manner.

DUST COLLECTOR HOSE

A dust collector hose has been providedwith the grinder. Slide hoses onto sidesof T-connector and flanges. Mount thehose by sliding the flanges at each endover the exhaust ports on the left andright wheel guards. Attach 2½” shopvacuum hose to the collector hose. Besure hose is mounted securely.

Be sure to emptyshop vacuum of all

flammable material (flammable liquidsand vapors, paper, wood, plastic, etc.)before connecting vacuum to grinder.Hot sparks from grinder may ignite flammable materials in shop vacuum.

OPTIONAL LIGHTED EYESHIELD(MODEL 6X854)

Position eyeshield bracket assemblyover bosses provided on wheel guard.Bosses are tapped to receive two 1/4”-20 screws. Fasten bracket assembly towheel guard with two screws providedwith eyeshields.

InstallationWIRING GRINDER

Refer to Figure 2.

1. Grinder is prewired at the factory for220 volt, 3-phase operation. SeeFigure 2 for wiring diagram.

2. Grinder can be wired for 440 volt, 3-phase operation. See Figure 2 forwiring diagram for 440 volt.

3. Test grinder to be sure grindingwheels rotate downward toward toolrests. Switch any two leads to reverserotation if needed.

Wiring should beperformed by a qual-

ified electrician.

MOUNT GRINDER

1. Mount grinder to a solid horizontalsurface (hardware not provided). Ifmounted to a metal pedestal, alignmounting holes with correspondingholes in pedestal. Insert a 1/4-20 x1¼” hex head bolt with flat washer

through base of grinder. From thebottom of pedestal, place a 1/4” flatwasher and a 1/4”-20 hex nut ontothe bolt. Tighten only until spacebetween grinder base and pedestal is1/8” (for Model 2LKT1 only). Baseshould be flush for 2LKT3. Using second nut on each bolt, jam tightenagainst the first to prevent looseningby vibration.

2. To mount grinder to wooden benchtop, use 1/4 x 1¼” wood screws withflat washers beneath heads. Tightenscrews until space between grinderbase and bench top is 1/8” (for Model2LKT1 only). Base should be flush for2LKT3.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS

Improper connectionof equipment

grounding conductor can result in riskof electrical shock. Equipment should begrounded while in use to protect opera-tor from electrical shock.

Installation (Continued)Inspect tool cords periodically, and, ifdamaged, have them repaired by anauthorized service facility.

Green (or green and yellow) conductorin the cord is the grounding wire. Neverconnect the green (or green and yellow)wire to a live terminal.

Many cover plate screws, water pipesand outlet boxes are not properlygrounded. To ensure a proper ground,the grounding means must be tested bya qualified electrician.

OperationAlways wear safetyglasses complying

with United States ANSI Z87.1 (shownon package) before commencing powertool operation. Safety glasses are avail-able through your Grainger catalog.

1. Keep a steady, moderate pressure onthe work and keep it moving at aneven pace for smooth grinding.

2. Pressing too hard overheats themotor and prematurely wears downthe grinding wheels.

3. Note the original bevel angle on theitem to be sharpened and try tomaintain that angle. Sharpening acutting edge requires removing burrsfrom edge.

4. Deburring edge is done best by usingthe grinder to pull burr from edgeacross the bevel angle.

5. The grinding wheel should rotateinto object being sharpened.

6. Dip work into a coolant regularly toprevent overheating. Overheatingcan weaken metals.

Maintenance1. As wheels wear, tool rests should be

positioned closer to the face of thewheels.

2. The gap between the wheel and thetool rest should not be greater than1/16”. When the wheels are worn to

the extent that the 1/16” maximumgap cannot be maintained, thewheels should be replaced.

3. Replacement wheels should have aminimum rated speed of at least 3600RPM for 2LKT1 and 1800 for 2LKT3.

4. Maximum wheel diameter for 2LKT1is 8”, and 10” for 2LKT3.

5. To loosen nuts holding the wheels,disconnect power and push a woodwedge between the tool rest and thewheel to keep the shaft from turning.The threads on the right side of thegrinder (facing unit) are right hand;threads on the left side are left hand.Tighten nuts securely before operat-ing the grinder.

6. For grinding efficiency, wheels shouldbe dressed periodically, especially ifthey become clogged from grindingsoft metals. Dayton Grinding WheelDressers, Model 2X951 or 6Z851, arerecommended (See page 7).

EL OPERADOR DEBE SABER COMOUSAR LA HERRAMIENTA

1. Use la herramienta correcta para eltrabajo. No fuerce la herramienta, o el accesorio, ni los use para un tra-bajo para el cual no han sido diseña-dos.

2. Desconecte la energía de la herra mienta cuando cambie los accesorios, tales como las ruedas rectificadoras, las ruedas puli-mentadoras y otras por el estilo.

3. Evite el arranque por acccidente.Asegúrese que el interruptor esté enla posiciíon de OFF (apagado) antesde enchufarla.

4. No fuerce la herramienta. Trabajaráen la forma más eficiente a la veloci-dad para la cual se diseñó.

5. Mantenga las manos alejadas de laspartes móviles y las superficies deesmerilado.

6. Nunca deje que una herramienta fun-cione sola. Desconéctela y no se vaya hasta que se detenga comple-ta mente.

7. No trate de alcanzar demasiado lejos.Manténgase firme y equilibrado.

1. Coloque el soporte de la herramienta(D) sobre el puntal del soporte de laherramienta y asegúrelo en su posi-ción con una arandela plana de 5/16pulg. (E) y una perilla de 5/16-18 x 1pulg. (F).

2. Fije el punta del soporte de la herramienta a la parte inferior de la protección de la rueda izquierdautilizando perno de cabeza hexago-nal de 3/8-16 x 3/4 pulg. (A) y unarandela plana de 3/8 pulg. (B).Asegúrese que la ranura del soporteesté ubicada sobre el refuerzo elevado de la protección. Apriete los pernos con la mano.

3. Ponga el soporte de la herramientade modo que la distancia entre éste yla rueda esmeriladora sea de menosde 1,6 mm. Cambie la posición delángulo del soporte de la herramientasi es necesario. Asegure todas lasmanillas y todos los pernos.

4. Monte el soporte de la herramientaderecho en una manera similar.

CONJUNTO DE LA PROTECCION DE OJOS

1. Fije la protección contra chispas (M) ala protección de la rueda izquierdautilizando un perilla de 3/8-16 x 1/2pulg. (N), una arandela plana de 3/8pulg. (B) y una arandela de seguridadde 3/8 pulg. (K).

2. Instale el soporte de la protección paralos ojos superior izquierdo (H) en laprotección para los ojos (I) utilizandodos tornillos de cabeza hueca #10-24 x½ pulg. (G) y el soporte de la protec-ción para los ojos inferior (J).

AVISO: El puntal de la protección deojos superior izquierdo viene estampadocon la letra “L” para identifi cación.

3. Deslícela a través del orificio en laparte superior de la protección contrachispas izquierda (M) en el soporte dela protección para los ojos superior(H) y asegure en su posición.

4. Ubique la protección de ojos en laposición deseada para la proteccióndel operador y asegure todas lasmanillas y pernos.

5. Monte el conjunto de la protecciónde ojos derecho de una manera pare-cida.

MANGUERA COLECTORA DE POLVO

Viene una manguera colectora de polvoincluida con la esmeriladora. Deslice lasmangueras en los lados del conector T yen las pestañas. Monte la mangueradeslizando las pestañas en cadaextremo sobre los orificios de escape, enla protección de la rueda del ladoizquierdo y la del lado dere cho. Adjuntela manguera de vacío del taller de 6,35cm a la manguera colec tora. Asegúreseque está montada en forma segura.

Asegúrese de vaciartodos los materi-

ales inflamables (líquidos y vaporesinflamables, papel, madera, plástico,etc.) de la aspiradora del taller antes deconectarla a la esme riladora. Las chis-pas calientes de la esmeriladora puedeninflamar los materiales que se encuen-tran en ésta.

PROTECCION DE OJOS ILUMINADAOPCIONAL (MODELO 6X854)

Coloque el conjunto del puntal de laprotección de ojos en las protube ranciasque vienen en la protección de la rueda.Las protuberancias son rosca das paraaceptar dos tornillos de 1/4”-20. Sujeteel conjunto del puntal en la protecciónde la rueda con los dos tor nillos quevienen con las protecciones de ojos.

InstalaciónCABLEADO DE LA ESMERILADORA

Refiérase a la Figura 2.

1. La esmeriladora ha sido precableadaen la fábrica para una operacióntrifásica de 220 voltios. Vea la Figura2 para el diagrama del cableado.

2. La esmeriladora se puede cablearpara una operación trifásica de 440voltios. Vea la Figura 2 para el dia -grama del cableado para 440 voltios.

3. Pruebe la esmeriladora para asegu -rarse que las ruedas esmeriladorasestén rotando hacia abajo, hacia lossoportes de la herramienta. Cambiecualquiera de los dos cables conduc -tores para invertir la rotación, si esnecesario.

electricista calificado.

MONTAJE DE LA ESMERILADORA

1. Monte la esmeriladora en una super -ficie horizontal sólida (no vienen losartículos de ferretería). Si viene mon -tada en un pedestal de metal, alineelos agujeros de montaje con los agu-jeros correspondientes en el pedestal.Inserte un perno de cabeza hexago-nal de 1/4-20 x 1¼” con la arandelaplana a través de la base de la esmeri-ladora. A partir de la parte inferiordel pedestal, ponga una arandelaplana de 1/4” y una tuerca hexagonalde 1/4”-20 en el perno. Apriételossolamente hasta que el espacio entrela base de la esmeriladora y elpedestal sea de 3 mm (para el moelo2LKT1 sola mente). La base tiene queestar al ras para el 2LKT3. Use lasegunda tuerca en cada perno,apriétela atas cándola en contra de laprimera para evitar que se pierdandebido a la vibración.

2. Monte la esmeriladora en la partesuperior del banco de madera, usan-do los tornillos de madera de 1/4 x1¼” con las arandelas planas debajode las cabezas. Apriete los tornilloshasta que el espacio entre la base dela esmeriladora y la parte superior delbanco sea de 3 mm (para el modelo2LKT1 solamente). La base tiene queestar al ras para el modelo 2LKT3.

INSTRUCCIONES PARA LA CONEXION A TIERRA

Si se conecta in-correctamente el

conductor de conexión a tierra delequipo, se puede producir un riesgo dechoque eléctrico. El equipo debe estarconectado a tierra mientras se estáusando, para proteger al operador con-tra un choque eléctrico.

Inspeccione los cordones de la herra -mienta periódicamente y, si están daña-dos, hágalos reparar en un lugar de ser-vicio autorizado.

El conductor verde (o verde y amarillo)del cordón es el cable de conexión atierra. Nunca conecte el cable verde (overde y amarillo) a un terminal cargado.

Muchos tornillos de la plancha decubierta, de las tuberías de agua y delas cajas de salida no están conectados atierra correctamente. Para asegurarseque haya una conexión a tierra correc-ta, un electricista calificado debe probarlos medios de conexión a tierra.

OperaciónSiempre use gafas de seguridad que

cumplan con ANSI Z87.1 de EstadosUnidos (se muestra en el paquete),antes de empezar a operar la herra -mienta eléctrica. Puede obtener gafasde seguri dad a través de su catálogo de Grainger.

1. Mantenga una presión uniforme ymoderada en el trabajo y manténgalamoviéndose a una velocidad parejapara obtener un esmerilado parejo.

2. Si se presiona demasiado, el motor se calienta demasiado y las ruedasrecti fi cadoras se desgastanprematura mente.

3. Fíjese en el ángulo de biselado origi -nal en el artículo que se va a afilar ytrate de mantener ese ángulo. El afi -lamiento de un borde de corte exigela remoción de las rebabas del borde.

4. La mejor manera de remover las reba -bas se logra si se usa la esmeriladorapara retirarlas del borde a través delángulo biselado.

5. La rueda rectificadora debe rotar enel objeto que se está afilando.

6. Sumerja el trabajo dentro de un en -fria dor regularmente para evitar que

se caliente demasiado. El calenta -miento excesivo puede debilitar losmetales.

Mantenimiento1. A medida que las ruedas se des -

gastan, los soportes de la herra -mienta deben quedar colocados máscerca de la cara de las ruedas.

2. El espacio libre entre la rueda y elsoporte de la herramienta no debeser más grande de 1,6 mm. Cuandolas ruedas se han desgastado hasta talpunto que no se puede mantener elespacio libre máximo de 1,6 mm, espreciso cambiar las ruedas.

3. Las ruedas de repuesto deben teneruna velocidad nominal mínima de porlo menos 3600 RPM para el 2LKT1 yde 1800 para el 2LKT3.

4. El diámetro máximo de la rueda parael 2LKT1 es de 20 cm y de 25 cm parael 2LKT3.

5. Para soltar las tuercas que sujetan lasruedas, desconecte la energía eléc -trica y empuje una cuña de maderaentre el soporte de la herramienta yla rueda para impedir que el eje gire.Las roscas del lado derecho de laesme riladora (de frente a la unidad)son de derecha; las roscas en el ladoizquierdo son de izquierda. Aprietelas tuercas en forma segura antes deoperar la esmeriladora.

6. Para mantener la eficiencia delesmerilado, las ruedas tienen que serafiladas periódicamente, especial -mente si se tapan cuando se esme -rilan materiales blandos. Se recomien -dan las Afiladoras de Ruedas Rectifi -cadoras Dayton, Modelos 2X951 o6Z851 (Vea la página 7).

GARANTIA LIMITADA DE DAYTON POR TRES AÑOS. DAYTON ELECTRIC MFG. CO. (DAYTON) LE GARANTIZA AL USUARIOORIGINAL QUE LOS MODELOS TRATADOS EN ESTE MANUAL DE LAS ESMERILADORAS DE BANCO DAYTON® ESTAN LIBRES DEDEFECTOS EN LA MANO DE OBRA O EL MATERIAL, CUANDO SE LES SOMETE A USO NORMAL, POR UN AÑO A PARTIR DE LAFECHA DE COMPRA. CUALQUIER PARTE QUE SE HALLE DEFECTUOSA, YA SEA EN EL MATERIAL O EN LA MANO DE OBRA, YSEA DEVUELTA (CON LOS COSTOS DE ENVIO PAGADOS POR ADELANTADO) A UN CENTRO DE SERVICIO AUTORIZADO DESIG-NADO POR DAYTON, SERA REPARADA O REEMPLAZADA (NO EXISTE OTRA POSIBILIDAD) SEGUN LO DETERMINE DAYTON.PARA OBTENER INFORMACION SOBRE LOS PROCEDIMIENTOS DE RECLAMO CUBIERTOS EN LA GARANTIA LIMITADA, VEA LASECCION “ATENCION OPORTUNA” QUE APARECE MAS ADELANTE. ESTA GARANTIA LIMITADA CONFIERE AL COMPRADORDERECHOS LEGALES ESPECIFICOS QUE VARIAN DE JURISDICCION A JURISDICCION.

LIMITES DE RESPONSABILIDAD. EN LA MEDIDA EN QUE LAS LEYES APLICABLES LO PERMITAN, LA RESPONSABILIDAD DEDAYTON POR LOS DAÑOS EMERGENTES O INCIDENTALES ESTA EXPRESAMENTE EXCLUIDA. LA RESPONSABILIDAD DE DAY-TON EXPRESAMENTE ESTA LIMITADA Y NO PUEDE EXCEDER EL PRECIO DE COMPRA PAGADO POR EL ARTICULO.

EXCLUSION DE RESPONSABILIDAD DE LA GARANTIA. SE HAN HECHO ESFUERZOS DILIGENTES PARA PROPORCIONAR DILI-GENTEMENTE PARA PROPORCIONAR INFORMACION E ILUSTRACIONES APROPIADAS SOBRE EL PRODUCTO EN ESTE MANUAL;SIN EMBARGO, ESTA INFORMACION Y LAS ILUSTRACIONES TIENEN COMO UNICO PROPOSITO LA IDENTIFICACION DEL PRO-DUCTO Y NO EXPRESAN NI IMPLICAN GARANTIA DE QUE LOS PRODUCTOS SEAN VENDIBLES O ADECUADOS PARA UNPROPOSITO EN PARTICULAR NI QUE SE AJUSTAN NECESARIAMENTE A LAS ILUSTRACIONES O DESCRIPCIONES. Consejo Técnico y Recomendaciones, Exclusiones de Responsabilidad. A pesar de las prácticas, negociaciones o usoscomerciales realizados previamente, las ventas no deberán incluir el suministro de consejo técnico o asistencia o diseño del sis-tema. Dayton no asume ninguna obligación o responsabilidad por recomendaciones, opiniones o consejos no autorizadossobre la elección, instalación o uso de los productos.

Adaptación del Producto. Muchas jurisdicciones tienen códigos o regulaciones que rigen la venta, la construcción, la insta-lación y/o el uso de productos para ciertos propósitos que pueden variar con respecto a los aplicables a las zonas vecinas. Sibien se trata de que los productos Dayton cumplan con dichos códigos, no se puede garantizar su conformidad y no se puedehacer responsable por la forma en que se instale o use su producto. Antes de comprar y usar el producto, revise su aplicación ytodos los códigos y regulaciones nacionales y locales aplicables y asegúrese de que el producto, la instalación y el uso los cum-plan.

Ciertos aspectos de limitación de responsabilidad no se aplican a productos al consumidor; es decir (a) algunas jurisdiccionesno permiten la exclusión ni limitación de daños incidentales o consecuentes, de modo que las limitaciones o exclusiones anteri-ores quizás no apliquen en su caso; (b) asimismo, algunas jurisdicciones no permiten limitar el plazo de una garantía implícita,por lo tanto, la limitación anterior quizás no aplique en su caso; y (c) por ley, mientras la Garantía Limitada esté vigente nopodrán excluirse ni limitarse en modo alguno ninguna garantía implícita de comercialización o de idoneidad para un propósi-to en particular aplicables a los productos al consumidor adquiridos por éste.

Atención Oportuna. Se hará un esfuerzo de buena fe para corregir puntualmente, o hacer otros ajustes, con respecto acualquier producto que resulte defectuoso dentro de los términos de esta garantía limitada. En el caso de que encuentre unproducto defectuoso y que esté cubierto dentro de los límites de esta garantía haga el favor de escribir primero, o llame, aldistribuidor a quien le compró el producto. El distribuidor le dará las instrucciones adicionales. Si no puede resolver el proble-ma en forma satisfactoria, escriba a Dayton a la dirección a continuación, dando el nombre del distribuidor, su dirección, lafecha y el número de la factura del distribuidor y describa la naturaleza del defecto. La propiedad del artículo y el riesgo depérdida pasan al comprador en el momento de la entrega del artículo a la compañía de transporte. Si el producto se dañadurante el transporte, debe presentar su reclamo a la compañía transportista.
