Dayton Models 3E358B and 3E359B are 350,000 Btu/Hr heaters and 600,000 Btu/Hr heaters, respectively. These heaters use only Kerosene or No. 1 fuel oil forcombustion and electricity to run the motor. They are primarily intended for wellventilated indoor or outdoor temporary heating of buildings under construction,alteration, or repair (Read General Safety Information section carefully). Theymay be used in agricultural, industrial, and commercial environments. Productsof combustion are vented into the area being heated.

Safety information appears throughoutthese instructions. Pay close attention tothem. Below are definitions for the safetyinformation listed throughout this manual.

Carbon monoxidepoisoning may lead

to death!

Carbon monoxide poisoning: Earlysigns of carbon monoxide poisoningresemble the flu, with headaches,dizziness, and/or nausea. If you havethese signs, the heater may not beworking properly. Get fresh air atonce! Have heater serviced. Somepeople are more affected by carbonmonoxide than others. These includepregnant women, people with heart orlung disease or anemia, those underthe influence of alcohol, and those athigh altitudes.

IMPORTANT: Not every possible circum-stance that might involve a hazard can beanticipated. The warnings in this manualand on tags or decals affixed to the unitare therefore not all-inclusive. If aprocedure, work method, or operatingtechnique not specifically recommendedby Dayton is used, you must make sure itis safe for you and others. You shouldalso ensure that equipment will not bedamaged or made unsafe by the operat-ing or maintenance method you choose.

Improper use ofthis heater can

cause serious injury or death fromburns, fire, explosion, electrical shock,and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Make certain you read and understandall warnings. Keep these instructionsfor reference. They are your guide tosafe and proper operation of thisheater.

d) During fueling, all fuel lines andfuel-line connections shall beinspected for leaks. Any leaks shallbe repaired prior to returning theheater to service.

e) At no time shall more than oneday's supply of heater fuel be storedinside a building in the vicinity ofthe heater. Bulk fuel storage shall beoutside the structure.

f) All fuel storage shall be located aminimum of 25 feet from heaters,torches, welding equipment, andsimilar sources of ignition (excep-tion: the fuel reservoir integral withthe heater unit).

g) Whenever possible, fuel storageshall be confined to areas wherefloor penetrations do not permit fuelto drip onto or be ignited by a fire atlower elevation.

h) Fuel storage shall be in accor-dance with the federal, state, orlocal authority having jurisdiction.

• Never use heater where gasoline,paint thinner, or other highlyflammable vapors are present.

• Follow all local ordinances and codeswhen using heater.

• Use only in well-vented areas.Provide at least three square feet offresh, outside air for each 100,000Btu/Hr of rating. This heater pro-duces carbon monoxide, which islisted by the State of California as areproductive toxin under Proposi-tion 65.

• Use only in places free of flammablevapors or high dust content.

• Use only with the electrical voltageand frequency specified on modelplate.

• Use only Kero-sene or No. 1 fuel

oils to avoid risk of fire or explosion.Never use gasoline, naphtha, paintthinners, alcohol, or other highlyflammable fuels.

• Fueling

a) Personnel involved with fuelingshall be qualified and thoroughlyfamiliar with the manufacturer'sinstructions and applicable federal,state, and local regulations regard-ing the safe fueling of heating units.

b) Only the type of fuel specified onthe heater's data plate shall be used.

c) All flame, including the pilotlight, if any, shall be extinguishedand the heater allowed to cool, priorto fueling.

THEORY OF OPERATION

THE FUEL SYSTEM

The motor turns the fuel pump. Thefuel pump pulls fuel from the fueltank. The fuel pump pushes fuelthrough a filter and a solenoid valveand out the burner head nozzle. A finemist of fuel is sprayed into the combus-tion chamber.

• Heater must be grounded. Use only aproperly grounded three-wire exten-sion cord. Plug into grounded outletonly.

• Never start heater when combustionchamber is hot or if fuel has accumu-lated in combustion chamber.

• Never use gasoline, crankcasedrainings, naphtha, paint thinners,alcohol, or other highly flammablefuels.

• Never leave a heater plugged inwithout adult supervision if childrenor animals are likely to be present.

• Heaters used in the vicinity of tarpau-lins, canvas, or similar enclosurematerials shall be located a safedistance from such materials. Therecommended minimum safe distanceis 10 feet. It is further recommendedthat these enclosure materials be of afire retardant nature. These enclosurematerials shall be securely fastened toprevent them from igniting or fromupsetting the heater due to windaction.

• Minimum heater clearances fromcombustibles:

Outlet: 8 Ft. Sides: 4 Ft.

Top: 4 Ft. Rear: 4 Ft.

• Locate heater on a stable and levelsurface while hot or running or a firemay occur.

• When moving or storing heater, keepheater in a level position or fuelspillage may occur.

• Keep children and animals away fromheater.

• Unplug heater when not in use.

• This heater has a built-in thermostat.Plugged-in heater may start atanytime.

• Never use heater in living or sleepingareas.

• Never block air inlet (rear) or airoutlet (front) of heater.

• Never move, handle, refuel, orservice a hot, operating, or plugged-in heater.

• Never attach duct work to front orrear of heater.

• Warning to New York City Residents ForUse Only At Construction Sites in accor-dance with applicable NYC codes underNYC Board of Standards and appealscalendar number 62-59-SA.

THE AIR SYSTEM

The motor turns the fan. The fanpushes air into and around the combus-tion chamber. This air is heated andprovides a stream of clean, hot air.

THE IGNITION SYSTEM

The electronic ignitor sends voltage tothe spark plug. The spark plug ignitesthe fuel and air mixture.

THE FLAMEOUT CONTROL SYSTEM

This system causes the heater to shutdown if the flame goes out. It alsoallows the fan to continue runningafter normal shutdown of heater. Thiscools the combustion chamber.

Follow the mini-mum fresh, outside

air ventilation requirements. If properfresh, outside air ventilation is notprovided, carbon monoxide poisoningcan occur. Provide proper fresh, outsideair ventilation before running heater.

VENTILATION

Review andunderstand the

warnings in the General Safety Infor-mation section. They are needed tosafely operate this heater. Follow alllocal codes when using this heater.

TO START HEATER

1. Follow all ventilation and safetyinformation.

2. Locate heater to provide maximumcirculation of the heated air. Followall location requirements noted inSafety Information, pages 3 and 4.

3. Fill fuel tank with Kerosene or No. 1fuel oil.

4. Attach fuel cap.

Operation

5. Set thermostat dial to desiredtemperature.

NOTE: Thermostat setting must be higherthan surrounding air temperature.

6. Plug power cord of heater intothree-prong, grounded extensioncord. Extension cord must be at leastsix feet long.

Use only a three-prong, grounded

extension cord. Use cord with properwire size to assure 120 volt operation.See Extension Cord Wire Size Require-ments below.

7. Plug extension cord into standard120 volt/60 hertz, three-hole,grounded outlet.

FUELS

Use only kerosene,or No. 1 fuel oil to

avoid risk of fire or explosion. Neveruse gasoline, naphtha, paint thinners,alcohol, or other highly flammablefuels.

Do not use heavy fuels such as No. 2fuel oil or No. 2 Diesel. Using heavyfuels will result in:

• clogged fuel filter and nozzle

• carbon buildup on spark plug

• the need of nontoxic anti-icer infuel during very cold weather

IMPORTANT: Use a KEROSENE ONLYcontainer. Be sure storage container isclean. Foreign matter such as rust, dirt,or water will cause the flameoutcontrol to shut down heater. Foreignmatter may also require you to cleanfuel system often.

Operation (Continued) TO STOP HEATER

Never unplugheater while

heater is running. Heater must gothrough purge cycle. The purge cyclecools the combustion chamber. Damageto heater can occur if combustionchamber is not cooled. Do not restartheater until purge cycle is complete.

1. Turn thermostat dial to lowesttemperature setting. This will causeheater flame to go out. The motorwill continue to run during thepurge cycle. This allows the fan tocool the combustion chamber. Whenthe purge cycle is finished, the motorwill stop. Do not unplug heater untilpurge cycle is finished.

2. Unplug extension cord from outlet.

3. To temporarily stop heater, setthermostat at a temperature lowerthan air around heater. Heater willcycle back on if air temperaturearound heater matches thermostatsetting.

TO RESTART HEATER

Do not restartheater until purge

cycle is finished. The purge cycle coolsthe combustion chamber.

1. Wait until purge cycle is finishedafter stopping heater.

2. Repeat steps under To Start Heater,page 5.

8. The motor will start when extensioncord is plugged into outlet. Theheater should ignite at once. Ifheater does not ignite, restartheater. To restart heater, wait 60seconds, then push in flameoutcontrol reset button. Flameoutcontrol reset button is at rear ofheater near power cord (See Figure 6).

NOTE: If starting heater for first time,you may need to prime the pump. Ifequipped, slightly open the bleedervalve of the pump to allow air toescape. Quickly close the valve oncefuel is seen. Wipe up excess fuel. Ifequipped with canister fuel filter,remove the canister bottom and fillwith fuel. Reassemble filter. Wipe upany excess fuel. You may also have todo this after taking heater out ofstorage.

Before operatingheater or any

appliance from a portable generator,verify that generator has been properlyconnected to earth ground. Impropergrounding or failure to ground genera-tor can result in electrocution if aground fault occurs. Refer to owner’smanual supplied by generator manu-facturer for proper grounding proce-dures.

The operating voltage range of theheater is 108 to 132 Volts (120 Volts +/-10%). Prior to plugging heater intogenerator the output voltage shouldbe verified (if generator is equippedwith the automatic idle feature, theoutput voltage should be measuredwith the generator running at fullspeed). If the voltage does notmeasure in this range the heatershould not be plugged into thegenerator.

Refer to Operation on page 5 forstarting, stopping, and resetting heaterprocedures.

Never serviceheater while it is

plugged in, operating, or hot. Severeburns and electrical shock can occur.

UPPER SHELL REMOVAL

1. Remove screws along each side andtop of heater using 5/16" nut-driver.These screws attach upper and lowershells together (See Figure 8).

2. Lift upper shell off.

FAN BLADES AND AIR DEFLECTORS

1. Remove upper shell (See Figure 8).

2. Clean fan blades and air deflectorswith clean, soft cloth moistened withKerosene or solvent (See Figure 9).

3. Dry fan blades and air deflectorsthoroughly.

4. Replace upper shell.

SPARK PLUG

1. Remove upper shell (See Figure 8).

2. Remove spark plug wire from sparkplug (See Figure 10).

3. Remove spark plug from burnerhead using 13/16" open-end wrench(See Figure 10).

4. Replace spark plug if damaged orheavily coated with carbon.

5. Clean and regap spark plug elec-trodes to .075 inch (See Figure 11).

6. Install spark plug in burner head.

7. Attach spark plug wire to sparkplug.

1. Disconnect fuel lines from pump andfuel filter canister, if equipped, with7/16" wrench (See Figure 12).

2. Carefully pry fuel filter loose fromfuel tank with flat end of screw-driver.

3. Inspect fuel filter for water or dirt.

4. Rinse fuel filter and fuel lines withclean Kerosene.

5. Replace fuel filter into fuel tank.

6. Connect fuel lines to pump and fuelfilter canister, if equipped.

2. Loosen hex screw on flange clamp atrear of motor with 5/16" nut-driver(See Figure 15).

4. If fan turns freely, tighten screw onflange clamp.

5. If fan does not turn freely, replacepump.

1. Remove pump cover to access filter.

2. Rinse and wipe inside of pump coverand dry with clean cloth.

3. Rinse fuel filter in clean kerosene orblow compressed air from inside out.

4. Reassemble and tighten securely.Check for leaks.

1. Unscrew canister bottom fromcanister top with Channellock pliers.

2. Remove fuel filter and gasket fromcanister bottom (See Figure 14).

3. Inspect canister bottom and fuelfilter for water or dirt.

4. Rinse canister bottom in cleanKerosene.

5. Wipe inside of canister bottom drywith clean cloth.

6. Rinse fuel filter in clean Kerosene.

7. Put clean fuel filter and gasket backin canister bottom.

8. Screw canister bottom into canistertop.

9. Tighten securely. Check for leaks.

2. Remove fuel line from solenoidvalve using 7/16" wrench.

3. Remove spark plug wire from sparkplug.

4. Remove spark plug from burnerhead using 13/16" open-endwrench.

5. Remove five screws using 5/16" nut-driver and remove burner headfrom combustion chamber.

6. Place burner head into vise andlightly tighten.

7. Carefully remove nozzle fromburner head using 5/8" socketwrench (See Figure 19).

2. Use 7/16" wrench and tighten fuellines at solenoid valve, pump, andfuel filter canister (if equipped) (SeeFigure 17).

PUMP PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT FORHEATERS WITH FUEL FILTER INTER-NAL TO PUMP

1. Remove pressure gauge plug fromfuel pump port marked “GAUGE.”

2. Install accessory pressure gauge (partnumber 110380-01) to fuel pumpport marked “GAUGE” (See Figure20). Do not use bleeder valve port tocheck pressure. Bleeder valve portcontains pressure higher thanoperating pressure. Setting pumppressure with gauge in bleeder valveport will result in wrong operatingpressure.

3. Start heater (See Operation, page 5).Allow motor to reach full speed.

4. Adjust pressure. Use small flat bladescrewdriver to turn slotted screw atfuel pump port at top right side ofpump. Turn screw clockwise toincrease pressure. Turn screwcounterclockwise to decreasepressure. See specifications belowfor correct pressure for each model.

5. Stop heater (See To Stop Heater,page 6).

6. Remove pressure gauge. Replacepressure gauge plug in fuel pumpport marked “GAUGE.”

1. Drain all fuel from fuel lines andpump/filter (See Fuel Filters [TankFuel Filter], page 7).

2. Clean and flush fuel filter in fuelpump (See Fuel Filters, page 7).

3. Remove drain plug and drain fueltank.

4. Replace drain plug.

5. If any debris is noted in old fuel,add 1 or 2 quarts of clean Keroseneto tank, stir, and drain again. Thiswill prevent excess debris fromclogging filters during future use.

6. Replace drain plug. Properlydispose of old and dirty fuel. Checkwith local automotive servicestations that recycle oil.

7. Add two gallons (350,000 Btu/Hr)or three gallons (600,000 Btu/Hr) ofclean Kerosene or No. 1 fuel oil tofuel tank.

8. Replace fuel cap.

9. Operate heater for 5 minutes (SeeOperation, page 5).

10. Stop heater and let cool completely.

11. Remove drain plug and drain fueltank.

12. Replace drain plug.

13. Properly dispose of old and dirtyfuel.

14. If storing, store heater in a drylocation. Make sure storage place isfree of dust and corrosive fumes.

IMPORTANT: Do not store Keroseneover summer months for use duringnext heating season. Using old fuelcould damage heater.

(Dayton) to the original user against defects in workmanship or materials undernormal use for one year after date of purchase. Any part which is determined to be defective in material or workmanshipand returned to an authorized service location, as Dayton designates, shipping costs prepaid, will be, as the exclusiveremedy, repaired or replaced at Dayton’s option. For limited warranty claim procedures, see PROMPT DISPOSITION below.This limited warranty gives purchasers specific legal rights which vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
