propeller club position paper - midstream anchorage transfer

1
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE # # # The Port of Georgetown Propeller Club supports the concept of a midstream anchorage transfer facility in Winyah Bay for the following reasons: 1. Positive economic benefit of additional jobs created due to an increase in shipping traffic. 2. Increased shipping will add to the total tons of shipping which allows the Port of Georgetown to qualify for federal funds to maintain the shipping channel depth. 3. Additional berthing area allows more variety of ships and barges to move materials and goods through the Port of Georgetown. 4. A recent economic impact study for the Port of Georgetown by Coastal Carolina University estimated that every increase in 500,000 tons of shipping has an economic impact of $4.4 million and provides an estimated 42 jobs in our community. The Port of Georgetown Propeller Club supports a midstream anchorage transfer facility in general, and does not have a preference to any entity that wishes to develop such a project. We would request that any permit issued have conditions that will allow the first viable project to begin construction at the earliest date. There will be a meeting of the Port of Georgetown Propeller Club on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 6 PM at the Maritime Museum on 729 Front Street in Georgetown. This meeting is open to the public and will feature a SC State Ports Authority speaker discussing the status of the SC State Port of Georgetown and current/future business efforts. # # # General Info on Propeller Club of Georgetown The Propeller Club of Georgetown is a professional organization dedicated to the enhancement and promotions of all interests in the maritime community for the Port of Georgetown.
