Green And Silver Are The Ways Forward

Just Let The Packaging Talk

T his year, Asia Food Beverage Thailand has partnered up with ProPak Asia for the second

year running, and they held two sessions of conferences yesterday.

The morning session was themed “Going Green In the Food Industry”, and it focused on the environmentally-friendly products in the food and beverage industry as sustainability is an increasing concern for all around the world. More people have become aware and have started to care about the sustainability of our resources, especially in industrial sectors as they are main culprits of environmental problems.

The session was divided into three topics. First was “How to earn more green” and “Enhancing Brand Image through Bio-Friendly Products”, and addressing these was Jirada Prasartpornsirichoke, researcher at Kasikorn Research Centre, and specialising in the food and beverage industry and macroeconomics.

Kittiphong Limsuwannarotwill, president of Thai Bioplastics Industry, then addressed the topic of bioplastics as a green packaging choice to show how this material could help manufacturers lessen their impact on the environment. Suwant Nualkhao, former president of Thai Logistics and Production Society wrapped up the morning session with “A better environment through green logistics.”

The afternoon session provided valuable content for the theme of “Senior Insight”, which mainly emphasised trends and possibilities in the senior products market. Thailand ranks third in Asia for senior citizen population size, after Japan and South Korea. Senior citizens require special nutrition and products which are designed to fit their lifestyles and health; consequently, understanding senior’s minds is also important to market senior products efficiently.

The session began with a presentation by Nithima Siriphokakij, head of market channel development, office

of lifestyle trade and business development, ministry of commerce, who addressed the opportunities that exist for food products for senior consumers. Follwoing this, Niwat Chatawittayakul, founder and marketing director of Brandbaker, addressed “Marketing To Seniors In The Digital Age”, that clarified and showed the opportunity of digital marketing in senior products.

Lastly, Pattira Ruangphirakul, key account manager of DuPont (Thailand) enlightened attendees on ingredients and nutrients that would enhance food products catered to senior citizens.

“J ust let the packaging talk.” This was the theme of the first F&B Packaging Innovation Seminar jointly

organised by Be Media Focus (Thailand) Company Limited and the Department of Packaging Materials Technology, Faculty of Agro Industry, Kasetsart University. The objective of the seminar had been to reinforce knowledge and understanding among food and beverage professionals with regard to perspectives and demands of Thailand’s packaging industry which propel packaging innovation.

The event created a valuable learning platform with networking opportunities for industry stakeholders, trade buyers, suppliers and academics.

Experts with knowledge and experience in Thailand’s packaging industry in terms of science, trends, design and marketing spoke at the seminar. This included Assistant Professor Dr Tunyarut Jinkarn, Head of Department of Packaging and Materials Technology, Faculty of Agro-Industry, Kasetsart University, who shared insight and experience for the mega trends of food and beverage packaging.

Paradorn Chulajata, Managing Director of Prepack Thailand Company Limited also spoke about the

sciences behind packaging, in terms of innovative packaging solutions, and Nopneera Rugsasook, Managing Director of Yindee Design Company Limited guided on how design of products could lead to effective branding.

Dr Kritinee Pongtanalert, Associate Director of BBA Program at Chulalongkorn University, and

personal blogger of Japan Gossip, Kate-Wa-Dee Marumura, shared a case study on food and beverage packaging in Japan.

Over 280 delegates who are professionals in the food and beverage industry attended the seminar, which received positive feedback.

At the Heart Of The Kitcheninfamous melamine milk powder scandal from China in 2008 is driving consumer awareness and consequently demand for safe products.

“The growing middle class of Asia Pacific or Asia is not accepting low food safety standards or hygiene standards,” reasoned Mr Burdin. Big companies can no longer afford to deliver a product that is not being produced at the highest possible standards, as the legal, financial and brand implications would be too huge to deal with. “Hygienic food production is a must today,” he affirmed, adding that companies in the region do not compromise on food safety any more.

Other than being driven by consumer demand or by avoidance for a food scandal that could smear brand reputation, food safety is also an aspect today that is driven by competitors. Southeast Asia includes a lot of international players who produce food locally, and because they produce them at a standard for food safety, local companies are following. In fact, according to Patinya Sirikulchayanont, Industry Segment Manager, Food & Beverage South East Asia, Festo, they have no choice but to follow, else they would not be able to survive. This therefore helps to raise the standard for all players in the region for food safety.

In turn, food safety drives the need for traceability in the region. More companies are undertaking measures to monitor food processing and production more closely with vision sensors, data loggers, or temperature sensors, so as to be accountable for food safety. “Traceability is essentially becoming important and that needs such sensors,” said Mr Burdin. That said, traceability in Asia

S outheast Asia is called the ‘kitchen of the world’ as it is a region abundant with food and beverage

manufacturers. With a population of 600 million, a rapidly growing middle class, and about 700 sq km of land, the region is one to watch and be in to reap massive growth in the near future.

The food and beverage industry is driven by its inhabitants, says Christian Burdin, Managing Director, South East Asia, Festo. “[The industry] is big in Southeast Asia and it is growing, not only in size but also in sophistication in terms of the way things are being produced, hygienic standards, and also the general outlook of food and how it’s being presented,” he said.

On the rising Southeast Asian markets, he mentioned Thailand as the place to be for those in the food industry. Thailand has a world renowned food culture that it represents, and one that people across the world know and like. It is therefore the innovation and development hub for food, which drives the food industry, and not only in terms of volume. Thailand and the rest of Southeast Asia, with a population that is approximately a tenth of the global population, are therefore particularly interesting and the markets to watch out for.

The region may still be lacking in a number of things when compared with the West such as Europe or US, but they are getting there. For example, significant progress has been made in recent years regarding the standards of food safety for the region. In light of recent food scandals such as the horsemeat scandal in 2013, the Maggi noodles lead scare in India last year, or even the

will still take a while, but it will gradually move toward a standard close to that of Europe in time, said Mr Sirikulchayanont.

Besides incorporating measures for food safety and traceability, manufacturers need also be aware that food production today is driven by three things. According to Mr Burdin, these are: good quality, hygienic and safe products; low environmental footprint (low energy input and low input of raw materials); and lower costs and faster production. For manufacturers of components, sensors, or processing and packaging solutions such as Festo, these three are essentially what customers look at and what manufacturers need to respond to, he said.

Heading To New Frontiers

E nthusiasm doesn’t begin describing Ner ida Kelton, the business

development manager of the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), which represents a l l the packaging and processing machinery companies in Australia. She shares excitedly about the new innovations and technologies of the companies that are exhibiting at the Australian pavilion.

The reason for her vivacious energy can be partly attributed to the fact that this is the first time Australia is hosting a pavilion at ProPak Asia, and the first time that the Association is holding a national pavilion anywhere in the world.

“We wanted to introduce the Asian markets to our member companies through ProPak Asia and to create new export opportunities for them. This platform is an opportunity for us to promote our technologies and Australian manufacturing to the region,” said Ms Kelton. “Having the Australian companies come together is a good thing as it showcases at one go the broad range of different companies that we have. It gives people an idea of what Australia has to offer.”

There are seven companies exhibiting with the pavilion. While most of them are showcasing their products for the first time in ProPak Asia, there are second-timers like HMPS and Adaptapack. The former deals with automation solutions while the latter supplies robotic and automated solutions for packing and processing.

First Time For EverythingI t is the first time that Denmark has a national

pavilion at ProPak Asia. The Danish pavilion was organised by the Confederation of Danish Industry, one of the largest business organisations in Denmark with over 10,000 member companies covering everything from healthcare and energy to food and processing equipment. Their aim is provide the best platforms for their members to grow their trade.

The organisation had noticed a growing interest from Danish companies in the Asian markets, which was one of main reasons why they decided to launch a national pavilion in ProPak Asia. “ProPak Asia is a hub exhibition and is centred in Southeast Asia, which is one of the biggest regions in Asia. It makes sense to hold a national exhibition here where we see a rising interest,” said Soren Falck, the international adviser to the organisation. The Confederation’s recent focus on exhibitions as a platform to cultivate greater awareness for the Danish companies was also another factor.

There are nine companies in the Danish pavilion, a rise from the six that was estimated by the Confederation. “We initially made reservations for a much smaller area—54 square metres. That grew to 100 square metres

when we found out more companies wanted to join us,” said Mr Falck.

The bulk of the Danish companies are small-medium enterprises. Mr Falck explained: “It’s the smaller and newer companies to the Asian markets that find this platform useful. With an exhibition like ProPak Asia, it offers them a bigger chance to get contacts from the countries here.”

The products and technologies on display include metal detectors for food production, disinfection machines, cooling machines, conveyor belts, analytical companies as well as industrial cleaning and washing machines. Most of these are higher-end and tend to be unique solutions. “Generally in Asia, there has been an increased interest for high technology equipment,” explained Mr Falck.

When asked how the companies are doing so far in their first show at ProPak Asia, Mr Falck is optimistic. “When you have a pavilion with so many companies, it is inevitable that some will have more contacts than others. But the great thing is that everybody seems very positive. I foresee that we will be back next year!”

On A Grand Scale

T he Singapore pavilion is one of the largest country pavilions at this year’s ProPak Asia,

covering a floor space of 744 square metres with 25 companies exhibiting, three percent of which are first-time exhibitors. This year is the sixth consecutive year that Singapore is holding a pavilion, attributed to the consistent demand and interest among the Singapore companies.

There is no lack of vibrancy and panache at the Singapore pavilion, where wide-scale banners swathed the booths, and made the country’s pavilion zone very visible to visitors. “That’s what we intended,” said Shen Huizhen, the manager of international relations at the Association of Small & Medium Enterprises (ASME). “We want to increase our Singapore brand and visibility to potential buyers, to tell them what our country can offer.”

In order to do so, the ASME, together with International Enterprise (IE) Singapore, also put in extra marketing efforts including doing up pillar wraps, coming up with a detailed brochure about each company’s portfolio, placing adverts along the BTS walkways and having a conference run by various Singapore companies over the three days of the trade show.

Conference topics include smart manufacturing with Industry 4.0, serialisation and anti-counterfeit challenges, food protecting packaging solutions as well as frozen food equipment technologies. The Singapore companies were each given an opportunity to run a topic of their choice, while the organisers arranged for a meeting room and conference set-up. The firms could then invite their potential clients to the conferences, not only to gain better insights to the products and technologies of each company, but also to the create greater awareness to the trends, challenges and the potential solutions in the industry.

Companies exhibiting in the Singapore pavilion this year range from drink technology and labelling firms to manufacturers of anti-counterfeiting labels and various processing and packaging systems. While some firms are hoping to target the higher-end Thailand market with their high-tech products and services, others are looking to make inroads into lesser tapped areas like Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

“ProPak Asia is a one-stop trade show for the region itself. It is not just the Bangkok, Thailand market that we can reach out here; we are also able to reach out to all the neighbouring countries in the region,” said

Ms Shen. Singapore has plans to expand with a bigger and better pavilion next year. “We are looking for more companies to join us to offer more products and technologies from Singapore.”

A Thumb Is All You Need

Getting The Perfect Squeeze

John Bean Technologies’ Fresh’n Squeeze Citrus Juicer aims to provide consumers with a compact solution for fresher quality and more juice at a time. The juicer runs on a basic principle of instantaneous separation for improved juice quality—a separation of juice from peel, seed and albedo components which, if allowed to stay in contact with the juice, would have an adverse effect on flavour.

The juicer also yields up to 50 percent more juice per unit of fruit than other conventional point-of sale counterparts. Its design also allows the juicer to process the widest range of fruit sizes and most citrus varieties including oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes, and tangerines.

This point-of-sale juicer can handle a throughput of 10 fruit per minute, producing approximately 43 litres per hour and ensuring that consumers in hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores or juice bars all have access to freshly squeezed quality juice at any time.

The Place To Be“P roPak Asia is the place to be,” declared Claire

Louveau, project manager of Business France, when we asked her thoughts on the significance of the trade exhibition for the French companies at the country’s pavilion this year. “We are seeing an increasing number of visitors to our booth every year since 2009 when we were first here, so it’s necessary that we keep coming back. ProPak Asia represents an opportunity to reach out to direct clients and potential partners from the region.”

This year, there are 12 companies at the French pavilion, some of whom have been exhibiting with the pavilion for more than five years. The products and technologies on display cover a range of industries including processing, packaging, pharmaceutical, and food.

According to Mr Louveau, the pavilion ensures that logistics and communications run better. “It’s so that they won’t have to worry about design or liaising and they can focus on getting contacts,” she explained.

One of the companies who is returning again this year at the French pavilion is Karlville, which designs, manufactures and sells a range of shrink-sleeve converting and shrink sleeve application equipment. Service and marketing manager of Karlville, Claude Morel, hopes to push into the low-speed market with Karlville’s presence this year. He also wants to acquire more contacts from this region. “We see a lot of potential in this region. Most of which are centred in Indonesia. The investment is huge there,” he said.

Tapping Into The Region’s PotentialT he Bavarian pavilion is no stranger to the scene in

ProPak Asia. This year, they have returned with 11 companies, nine of whom are repeat participants. One of the frequent faces is KBA-Metronic, a medium-sized enterprise that deals with marking and coding systems.

There are two new players in the group: Baumuller, a manufacturer of automation and electric drive systems from operation and visualisation tools to software and controllers as well as Octagon Process Technology, which manufactures technologies and products for major film parameters on a blown film line.

“Thailand is one of the fastest growing countries in terms of human development,” said Catrin Grebner, manager of delegation trips for Bayern International, when asked on the decision to set up a Bavarian pavilion again this year. “There is a growing population and a rising consumer demand for convenience food and

beverage packaging that we need to tap into.”Thailand’s food and beverage producers have also

played a role in the choice to come back. “There are many producers from this country who are starting to export their products to Europe. This means that they will need machinery for packaging and labelling. And we can fill in this gap,” Ms Grebner elaborated.

But Thailand is not the only market the Bavarian companies are targeting. “Thailand is like the action centre for Southeast Asia. The fact that surrounding countries like Vietnam and Indonesia are also participating in ProPak Asia is important. We see plenty of opportunities in these areas as well.”

Will they be returning again next year? “Definitely. Many Bavarian companies have been asking us if we are returning again next year. For them, ProPak Asia is an important platform and a success and they will want to come back.”

Showing SolidarityT he first day has seen a relatively good response for

the companies at the Italian pavilion, according to Gian Paolo Crasta, the marketing and communications in-charge at UCIMA, the Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association. Mr Crasta is hopeful that there will be even more people coming to visit the Italian pavilion on day two, having already witnessed a large number of international visitors from Southeast Asia, India and Bangladesh. “Day two is where we can get a better gauge of how we are doing this year.”

Since 2013, the UCIMA has been supporting Italian companies who are hoping to gain a foothold into the Asian market. While there are plenty of firms in Italy who have made inroads into the region, many more are hoping to find their way into the burgeoning Asian market. And exhibiting at a large-scale show like ProPak Asia would make it easier.

Mr Crasta estimates that there are some 100 other Italian firms exhibiting.

“Almost every company in Italy has a production niche that they are good at and focus on. And so visitors to the Italian pavilion can find a diverse number of companies covering an entire range of processing and packaging machinery, with a strong focus on food and beverage machines for their businesses,” said Mr Crasta.

As a pavilion, Mr Crasta believes that it would offer the Italian companies a better standing and image. “Solidarity can give a better image than a single company can obtain, particularly if you are new to the region. It also helps visitors identify which are the Italian firms.”

The current trend in the Asian packaging and processing market focuses on quality, according to Mr Crasta. “Correspondingly, we have also seen an increase in automation and a request for machines complying with international food standards.”

High Pressure Processing On The Rise

H igh pressure processing (HPP) is said to be the future of food and beverage technology, according

to a report by Campden BRI when they conducted a survey on European food experts in 2015. The open-ended survey meant respondents were not prompted for an answer at all, and the top five technologies as answered by the respondents were: HPP, cold plasma, pulsed electric fields (PEF), microwave pasteurisation/sterilisation and ultra-violet processing.

But what is HPP and why is it seemingly overtaking all other technologies?

High pressure processing is a sterilisation method which subjects food and beverage products to intense pressure of 600 mpa (equivalent to that present in an ocean 60 km deep) for a few seconds to minutes, killing all bacteria present.

Conventionally, manufacturers of both food and beverages have used the traditional technique of pasteurisation, a heat treatment technique, to kill bacteria. Although this method does indeed serve the purpose of making food and beverages safer by killing any bacteria present, it also has a major disadvantage—subjecting food and beverage products to heat also reduces food quality in terms of freshness, as well as lowers its nutritional value as many essential and valuable minerals are heat-sensitive.

HPP on the other hand, overcomes these disadvantages as it does not involve heat. It therefore avoids and reduces the need for food preservatives, enabling manufacturers to label products with a clean label, retain food quality, and produce safe products with an extended shelf life. Manufacturers of products such as fruit beverages that contain heat-sensitive vitamins and minerals would therefore prefer this method over pasteurisation as it would retain these and provide a healthier drink, which manufacturers and retailers can then present as a premium option for consumers who would be more willing to pay extra for them.

HPP also opens up opportunities for innovation; other ingredients never before used in food and beverages due to their limitation of being heat-sensitive may now be incorporated into these products. This includes molluscs, crustacean meat, or general seafood, which traditionally have to be subjected through heat (usually boiling) in order to assure their non-bacterial presence and safety.

Also, pasteurisation, involving heat, would require a lot of energy which drives up costs. HPP in contrast, requires only water—which can be recycled—and electricity. HPP therefore provides a green alternative to pasteurisation, in addition to its other benefits.

A drawback of the technology is that it is far pricier than the average pasteuriser system, which

might discourage manufacturers from switching over despite the benefits it can offer. However, when taking into account the cost of the additional equipment and processes required with a pasteuriser (e.g. decontamination and maintenance of equipment), this cost may be evened out, said Colette Jermann, lead author of the study and food scientist for emerging

technologies at Campden BRI. Still, in a world where consumers are becoming

more conscious about what they consume and demand for healthier and more natural food and beverage products, HPP could be one way to ensure that food and beverages remain safe, yet retain the original characteristics of flavour and nutrients.

T he Asia Drink Conference (ADC) 2016 will take place on 17 June, 2016, at Meeting Room 222-223 at BITEC. As it has been for the past three years, this

fourth edition of the event is held in conjunction with processing and packaging trade show, ProPak Asia.

With the theme “Food Research and Innovation for Sustainable Global Prosperity”, the 17th Food Innovation Asia Conference organised by FoSTAT will be held across three days, from 16-18 June, 2016.

The conference will be divided into four tracks for day one, and four tracks per session for day two. Each of these tracks will focus on different areas of food-related topics such as food chemistry, food processing and engineering, food biotechnology, food packaging, and food safety. Around 200 scientific research papers will be shown at the conference through oral and poster presentations.

As a highlight of the conference, there will be two student-centred competitions, the Food Innovation Contest on day two, and the FoSTAT Nestle Bowl Quiz on day three.

Thai Packaging Centre & TISTR Conference

Organised by Thai Packaging Centre and the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), the conference will address two main topics. In the morning session, the topic discussed will be “Flexible Packaging for Better Living” by Suebsak Koochaiyanon, assistant managing director, and Rungtip Rakmae, packaging innovation manager of TPN Flexpak Company Limited.

The afternoon session will address “Market Trend for Barrier Packaging in Food and Agriculture Industry.” Participants can look forward to learning about the benefits of barrier packaging and how to use it for retort foods or how it is a sustainable solution, as well as how modify atmosphere packaging (MAP) can be used for fresh food and meat.
