The theme is all about the power of the imagination. It will take young readers into a mysterious and wondrous land where they can discover the joy of reading and nurture a life-long love affair with books. It also promotes the library as a place of wonder and excitement, where librarians can offer children invaluable advice and guidance to help them through their quest.

The narrativeChildren can help our three Quest Seekers, Raj, Belle and Louis to complete a three-staged challenge to find the golden book.The Quest stages are: 1. Firebird Rising, 2. Mountain Mission, 3. Dragon’s Lair. The adventure starts in their local library when theQuest Seekers meet Cadmus the gatekeeper, who gives them their Quest: to bring back a golden book. By collecting stickers tocomplete the pictures on the poster, children taking part will find the golden book and complete the challenge.

The materialsThe shift in format last year to the fold out poster with spaces for stickers was well received, so we’re following that again, alongwith the lenticular (moving image card) to keep a record of books read. This year, some stickers will be scratch and sniff.

New this year is a press out and make dragon model (item 11), and a unique colour change pen in keeping with the fantastical theme (item 15). There’s also a traditional puzzle toy featuring the Quest Seekers dragon (item 12)

which will delight adults and children alike, and back by popular demand this year is the fridge magnet (item 14), and a die-cut bookmark (item 13).

Building on the Enjoying Reading SRC resources last year, we are offering the useful school staffroom/library “How it works”poster (item 28) and the post challenge classroom wall display poster for celebrating summer reading, which is also suitable forpublic libraries (item 29). To stretch transition year children a little further, there’s a fabulous “Beyond Quest Seekers” notebook,full of creative reader development activities, complete with a separate Booked Up version for English authorities (item 27).

For first time, sample/demonstration packs of materials will be available. These are ideal for school visits/staff training, and willbe delivered in advance of your bulk delivery (item 31).

Finally, we’re delighted to be offering a separate book bin header, which can be purchased independently of the book collections (item 26).

The websiteThe Quest Seekers website supports children who take up the challenge with specially devisedactivities and games. It will also give children the chance to read author blogs, and link through toreviews and activities on the Stories from the Web site. The Quest Seekers site will go live in June 2009.

Quest Seekers Fold-Out PosterThis large-format full-colour fold-out poster shows the three parts to theQuest: Firebird Rising, Mountain Mission and Dragon’s Lair. There are nine stickers to collect to complete the picture including threescratch and sniff stickers, plus space for recording progress. The posteris double sided with information about the Challenge and the QuestSeekers characters on the back.

Quest Seekers StickersThere will be three stickers per sheet this year including a scratch and sniff sticker on each. Each scratch and sniff sticker will smell different: fire, flowers and dragon breath! The stickers help childrencomplete the picture, breaking the challenge down into realistic goals to give them a sense of achievement.

Materials for Children with Visual Impairment

Super-sized fold-out posters with 18+ font size and large stickers (some scratch and sniff) so VI children can still experience all the fun of the challenge. New this year, the VI certificate will be over-brailled, plus braille handout sheetswith instructions will be included with each pack. Subsidised by and produced in consultation with The RNIB National Library Service. We recommend that every authority purchase at least one pack so that VI children in their authority can take part.

Beyond Quest Seekers - NotebookBeyond Quest Seekers is a notebook especially devised for Transition Year children (school years 6-7, ages 10-12).It’s a space they can call their own, designed to stimulate the imagination, and provide them with a funky formatwith activities to develop ideas, explore favourite books, doodle characters and have fun with words. Sample/Demonstration PackWe know many authorities would value samples of materials in advance of their main deliveries, to showchildren on school visits, and to help with staff training.

Currently we respond ad-hoc to authorities requesting advance samples. Whilst this is seemingly a simpleoperation, the print and collation schedules are very tight and this is becoming increasingly difficult to manage.So this year we are introducing a new system of sample/demonstration packs being available earlier.

A sample pack will contain a set of core materials and all the available incentives, so every pack will be thesame, no matter what materials are on your main order. Each sample pack will contain four sets of the children’sfold-out poster, collectible stickers, moving image membership card, certificate, medal, bookmark, magic pen,dragon model, magnet, and puzzle toy.

The cost per pack, which will contain four of every item, will be £15.00

These might seem expensive, but this is due to the cost of hand collation and separate distribution.

Delivery will have to be to the same delivery address as on the order form.

NB: We can’t provide Welsh bilingual sample packs (bilingual materials printed later and distributed straightaway).Sample packs will be distributed at the same time as Scottish/NI orders, towards the end of May.

A CD-ROM containing all additional resources will be sent out to all participatingauthorities.

The CD-ROM will contain graphics, photos, training notes for staff with PowerPointpresentations, template press release and schools’ letters, pdfs of readerdevelopment activities, wordsearch/activities/colouring-in sheets, comments slipsfor evaluation and photocopiable registration forms.
