AT ISSUE:
How can states & local education agencies benefit from building capacity of parents as stakeholders?
How can parents benefit from being included by states and local education agencies as stakeholders?
How can both of these be achieved in the arena of large-scale assessment, and accountability? We must build assessment literacyWe must create situations conducive to parent
impact

REACHING PARENTS
Our charge: How can a research center take steps to empower parents as stakeholders?
Most reports directed at other audiences State education department personnelResearchers and others in higher education
One idea: Our organization’s website has distinct & accessible page for parent reports Approximately 40 hits per month on website
4
THE PARENT AS “INTENDED” AUDIENCE
These parent reports developed with care Special effort made to include graphicsDocuments are available in alternate languageReading level differs from our standard report
There is no such thing as a “Guide for parents and educators (or researchers, or….)”
One key for us: Finding help – we know others have more experience writing to this audience
5
ONE EXAMPLE
Assessment is confusing: We created an alternate assessment report series Two reports clarify issues and distinctions between AA-
AAS and AA-MAS: The hook here is the effect on learning opportunities
Another document causes the reader to rethink assumptions about alternate achievement standards
Organization: Chapters called Big Ideas Misperception, Response, Recommendation tables
6
AND ONE MORE (FOR GOOD MEASURE )
Legislation is confusing: We created a report titled: NCLB and IDEA: What parents of students with disabilities need to know and do
Appealing layout, unique color printing Highlight boxes show key information “To know” heading draws attention Frequently asked questions/Glossary included Needed help from a friend: Candace Cortiella
