UNDER THE BANYAN TREEUNDER THE BANYAN TREEExcerpts of Message from Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh - by Hon’ble President of India, Shri A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

In the last one year I’ve met nearly 200,000 students from all over India and I have two messages from these visits. The first is that 300 million children who are below 20 years of age in India want peace, prosperity, happiness and safety. They want to live in a developed India. That has to be the national vision for India. How can we turn our national dream into a beautiful reality? Fortunately, thee is a blueprint and a road map to go to the India 2020 of our national dreams. That entails working intensively on five important areas that have been identified. These are agriculture and food processing, education and health-care, information and communication technology, infrastructure development including networking of rivers and self-sufficiency in critical technologies.

The second message I have received from my extensive travel is that most Indians, experienced and old, energetic and middle-aged, young and innocent, all look to religion for solace and safety. I have also visited a great many religious places and houses of worship throughout the length and breadth of this great country and I have met many of our religious leaders. The religions are like exquisite gardens, places full of surpassing beauty and tranquility, like sacred groves filled with beautiful birds and their melodious songs. They are enchanting islets, veritable cases for the soul. But they are islands nevertheless. If we can connect all these islands with love and compassion, in a garland project for the new millennium, we will have a prosperous people in front of us.

The ‘Enlightened Citizen’ emerges out of education with a value system, transforming religion into spiritual force and economic development. Integrated development of all these similar aspects would enrich society with peace and prosperity in abundant measure.

Tete-e-tete with Shri Pramod Uniyal, Dy.DG

What does Railway mean to you? A profession. A proud and historical organization to belong to and serve at a time of its transformation into a IT driven services sector entity.

The one job/posting that has given you professional satisfaction the most.Working as Director in the Railway Fares and Freight Committee. It was an opportunity to critically examine the working of the Indian Railways and its possible transformation into a competitive and socially responsive financially viable government undertaking, with experts ; and more so in the backdrop of the new Industrial Policy resolution of 1991 and attempt to liberalize and globalize the Indian Economy.

One thing, which is the landmark of Railways ?Superficially steam engines but in essence, and more so in reference to the Indian Railways, a continuing growing legacy of the concept of the elimination of distance in the early nineteenth century.

One thing, which is lacking in Railways?Self Confidence

One recipe to improve Indian RailwaysBecome a learning organization

One book that you would like to recommend to the readersGurcharan Das’s India Unbound

How do you spend your free time?Reading

How has your family contributed to your professional growth? It has mirrored one’s philosophy of working by its unstinted disinterested critical appreciation

In your opinion (or from your experience) what should be the tenets of life?Confidence, mental strength to face adversity and humility
