Planning Your Home TheatreThe first choice most people make when planning a home theatre is whether it will be located in a dedicated room or a multipurpose space. Both have their advantages. Read on...
Is a Dedicated Home Theatre Right for You?A dedicated home theatre is focused solely on the viewing experience. The room may be equipped with theatre seats, a popcorn machine,evenamarquee.Usuallytherearenowindows,solightcontrolisnotaproblem.Thescreenisgenerallyfixedinposition.
For a dedicated home theatre, the Draper Onyx is an excellent choice (See page 4). You may also want to consider a curved screen, TheatreMask - Screen Masking System or Home Theatre Stage Curtains.
Theatre in Your Media Room? (or a living room, bedroom, dining room, great room, or family room)When you incorporate the home theatre into a multipurpose space, you have many options. The screen in a multi-purpose home theatre needs to disappear. This is easiest with a motorized projection screen. Draper screens can be integrated with the master control or home automation system.
Draperoffersawidevarietyofmotorizedscreens.Formaximumflexibility,choosetheexclusive,patentedAccesssystem.Withmostelectrically operated screens—particularly those recessed in the ceiling—service or replacement is a big problem. With the Ac-cess, the screen surface and roller are separate from the case, and the brackets are adjustable. Service and upgrades are easy.
For multiple screen formats, inquire about the Access/MultiView (See page 21). Access/MultiView contains a standard viewing surface in HDTV, WideScreen or Cinemascope format, and masking on an independently motorized roller to reduce the screen to a narrower video format.
You will probably have windows in the room, so you need effective light control. Consider Draper FlexShades (See pages 31-35). Fully opaque shades in a variety of fabrics install next to the glass, behind your decorator window coverings, or even on the outside ofthewindow.Motorizedunitsarecompatiblewithwhole-houseautomationsystems,andarethemostenergy-efficienttypeofwindow coverings, depending on the level of control you desire.
Is a Rear Screen Best for Your Home?Rear projection screens are an excellent option for a dedi-cated home theatre (See pages 23-25). Rear screens remove theprojector from theviewing roomandallow significantlybrighter light in the theatre. However, rear projection requires a space behind the screen for the projector. That space can be large, depending on the projector and the size of the screen. WithDraper’sRPXRearProjectionSystem,ahigh-qualityfirstsurface mirror reduces the depth of the projection room by up to 40%. Draper manufactures the widest range of rear projec-tion screens available, including high contrast surfaces with remarkable uniformity over an extremely wide viewing cone.
Concealing Your Projector or FlatScreenAnother issue in a multipurpose home theatre is concealing the projector. Draper offers a wide variety of lifts to conceal a projector above the ceiling, in walls, or in other spaces unique to your home (See pages 26-30). All are motorized, have numer-ous control options, and are compatible with home automa-tion systems. Draper’s innovative FlatScreen Lifts, in two sizes, allowyoutoconcealaflatscreendisplayupto50˝ diagonal in a cabinet or other furniture. See page 30 for details. Draper also offers Custom Lifts able to conceal virtually any type of AV equipment and reveal it in ways limited only by your imagina-tion (See page 30).Dealer: Millenium Waves, Orlando, FL, Photography: Joe Santos, Orlando, FL

Draper offers the industry’s most comprehensive collection of viewing surfaces but makes selecting the perfect surface easier by dividing our viewing surfaces into families. These families subdivide our viewing surfaces, based on important characteristics which clarify how the screen will be used, to ensure you get the very best screen surface for your needs. Draper viewing surfaces are divided into four distinct families: OptiView, OptiFlex, ClearSound, and CineFlex.
Matt White XT1000EExtra Wide Viewing Cone / Typical Contrast / On-Axis Gain of 1.0 The standard to which all other screen surfaces are compared. Rigid Rear ScreensIf you want a large screen and plenty of light in your media room, you may want to consider a rear projection system. With the projector hidden away behind the screen, you can have a brilliant image even with the lights on.
Cinescreen® — Diffusion Rear ScreensA transparent substrate, either glass or acrylic, with a perma-nently bonded diffusion medium. The diffusion medium dis-tributes projected light and creates a uniform high-resolution reproduction of the projected image. Cinescreen optical coatings are inherently abrasion resistant. With a Draper Cinescreen®, you can select the optimum combination of optical coating and tint based upon your projection equipment, audience seating pattern, desired contrast level, screen aspect ratio, ambient light level and aesthetic considerations. DraperusesthefinestplateglassandclearacrylicasCine-screen substrates. Virtually identical optical qualities.•Cineglass®—Recommended for maximum sound iso-
lation, scratch resistance and service life. Weighs ap-proximately twice as much as acrylic, install by a glazier is recommended.
•Cineplex®—Lightweight, durable and break resistant acrylic. Easier to install.
www.draperinc.com26
DiamondScreen™ — Optical Rear ScreensWith a DiamondScreen, you can expect the brightest rear screen image in the world—3.5 gain on axis. DiamondScreens have a panoramic 180° horizontal viewing cone. The High Contrast grey optical tint provides superior color contrast, and itsanti-reflectancepropertiesgivesuperiorperformanceevenunder conditions of high ambient light. DiamondScreens feature superiorcorner-to-centerbrightness,withno“hotspots.”
IRUS — Infinite Resolution Uniformity ScreenSpecificallydesignedtoprovidemaximumlegibilitywithanyprojector. Today’s projectors offer higher resolution than ever before—and that means sharper, crisper images. The IRUS is up to the challenge. To maintain digital image quality, the IRUS uses proprietary technology to display the sharpest, most uniform image you’ve ever seen. Full details available at:www.draperinc.com/go/RearScreens.htm

Choosing the Right Window ShadeDraper offers window shades for interior and exterior installation. Exterior shades are extremely efficient, as they keep the solar heat outside the glass. With exterior shades, high openness factors can be used to preserve excellent view-through while minimizing solar heat gain.
Interior shades, on the other hand, are almost always convenient to operate (even with budget-friendly manual controls) and may also be easier to install. They may be layered with other window coverings for light control as well as energy savings. Opaque shades are almost always installed inside the windows.
Openness and OpacityA wide range of fabric colors and types are available. If room darkening is required for projection, privacy, or for daytime rest, consider an opaque fabric. To preserve daylight and views, Draper offers a wide variety of mesh fabrics. You will find tools to help select the color and openness on our website: www.draperinc.com/go/shadefabric.htm

Since 1902In the summer of 1902 Luther O. Draper decided to go into the window shade business. Mr. Draper’s business philosophy was simple—to make a quality product and sell it at a reasonable price. Mr. Draper saw the problem of the sun’s heat and glare in schools—the largest buildings in most communities at that time. He addressed that problem by making and selling spring-roller window shades in Spiceland, Indiana, 40 miles east of Indianapolis.
In 1918 Mr. Draper was joined by his son-in-law Elmer Pidgeon. Mr. Draper laterbecame a prominent state politician and Elmer Pidgeon assumed management of the company in 1938.
The window shade business grew through two world wars and a depression, and the Luther O. Draper Shade Co. became known as a good employer and a strong supporter of local youth and charitable organizations. In 1957, Luther Pidgeon, grandson of the founder, invented a new and uniquely durable classroom projection screen. With time, projection screens grew to be a complete product line, and were augmented by related audio-visual products suchasprojectorandflatscreenlifts.

Draper TodayThe FlexShade Systems line of
commercial window shades debuted in 1989, and in 1994 Draper entered
the gym equipment market. These expansions were overseen by the
fourth generation of family ownership. Today the company is a true global
citizen, with customers throughout the United States and over 100
foreign countries.
Draper’s 500 employees, still led by Luther Draper’s descendants, operate
with the same business philosophy: build a quality product, and sell it at a reasonable price. Over the years,
Draper has become known as a consistently responsible corporate citizen.
Employees and management today continue to build on that tradition.
