Context  &  Justification

Context

Located  in  the  heart  of  West  Africa,  Burkina  Faso  is  a  Sahelian  country  that  extends  over  an  area  of  approximately

274,000  square  kilometers.  The  population  of  Burkina  Faso  is  16.4  million  people  according  to  the  World  Bank.  90%  of

the  population  is  estimated  to  live  in  rural  areas.    According  to  a  2011  report  released  by  the  United  Nations

Development  Program  (UNDP),  Burkina  Faso  is  ranked  181  out  of  187  countries.  50%  of  the  population  lives  in

extreme  poverty  on  less  then  a  dollar  a  day.    The  population  consists  of  63  ethnicities  distributed  in  the  45  provinces

that  make  up  the  country.  The  Moore,  Jula  and  French  are  the  most  spoken  languages.  There  are  three  main  religions:

Islam  (55%),  Animism  (20%)  and  Christianity  (25%  of  which  5%  of  are  evangelical  Christians).

Agriculture  is  the  main  activity  and  is  practiced  by  more  than  70%  of  the  population.    In  the  rural  areas  the  percentages

are  70-‐80  %  because  most  live  off  the  land  in  spite  of  the  climatic  hazards.    The  land  is  dry  and  loosing  fertility  every

day.  Most  farmers  practice  traditional  farming  methods.  Two  seasons  alternate,  a  dry  season  from  October  to  mid-‐May

and  a  rainy  season  from  mid-‐May  to  September.

Food  security  and  its  relationship  to  sustainable  agricultural  and  rural  development  have  increasingly  become  matters

of  concern  due  to  low  rainfall  leading  to  soil  detrition,  population  explosion  and  the  migration  of  refugees  from  their

war  torn  neighbor  of  Mali.

Justification

In 2012 Burkina Faso was confronted with its second food crisis in 3 years. Over 6 million people (400,000

households) went hungry. Furthermore, the mounting conflict in the neighboring country of Mali created a

migration of thousands of refugees across their borders exerting growing pressure on the limited resources

available for the local population.

These current events, a history of food insecurity and a population boom have Burkina Faso starring down the

barrel of a food shortage disaster unless real long-term sustainable action is done.

The  Bobo  School  of  Agriculture  and  Aquaponics  will  seek  to  address  the  issue  of  food  security  and  low  agricultural

production  through  a  non-‐formal  educational  medium.    As  briefly  noted,  although  80%  of  Burkina’s  population  is

involved  in  agricultural  activities,  food-‐producing  farmers  are  unable  to  meet  food  demand  for  their  villages  let  alone

the  entire  country.    The  school  will  educate  rural  farmers  to  create  a  sustainable  source  of  nutrition  through  training  in

closed  circuit  aquaponic  and  innovative  agricultural  practices.    This  formation  will  reduce  dependencies  on  variables

such  as  land,  water  and  fertilizers.

Objectives:

General  Objective:

A  self-‐sustaining  boarding  school,  educating  rural  farmers  to  create  a  sustainable  source  of  food  and  nutrition  through

closed  circuit  aquaponics  and  innovative  agricultural  practices.

Specific  Objectives:

• Three  healthy  meals  a  day  for  every  for  every  family  in  each  community  where  students  are  placed.
