First performed in 1973, Gayane has been performedon stages across the world including Argentina, Egypt,Turkey, Georgia, Uruguay, Poland, Russia, Bulgaria andmore. Originally directed by Aram Khachaturian, Gayaneis a ballet of love, jealousy and unrequited love. Thestory which is set in Armenia in the 1940’s during WorldWar 2, will be performed in Bahrain by the renownedArmenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre under thedirection of Vilen Galstyan. Since its inception in 1973,the theatre has worked with more than 200 differentoperas and ballets by Armenian, Russian and WestEuropean composers. Gayane, the ballet and theheroine, is a feast for the eyes, with beautifulpersonification of Armenia on stage using vivid colourswith unique shades and movements.

The Joe Louis puppet play is unlike any puppet showever seen. Each puppet is controlled by 3 puppeteers whoare visible on stage and who work together in perfectunison to produce the incredibly life-like humanmovements of each puppet. The puppeteers areclassically trained dancers who imitate the movements ofthe puppets to literally bring them to life. Joe LouisPuppet Theatre was awarded the “Best TraditionalPerformance Award” at the 10th World Festival of PuppetArt held in Prague in 2006. Joe Louis who wasconsecrated National Artist in 1996, sadly died a fewyears ago but his family continues this dying art to thedelight of visitors from all over the world.

Majeed Marhoun - MusicRecital & Book Launch Venue: Shaikh Ebrahim CenterDate: Sunday 16 March Time: 8:00 pm

Majeed Marhoun was the first Bahraini to play thesaxophone in 1962 which was not a familiar instrument tothe local people at the time. He formed a band with somelocal friends in 1963 to play different kinds of music,including jazz, which further inspired him to learn musicand the art of composing music. He composed a PianoSonata and many piano as well as solo flute pieces, someof which have been performed in Bahrain, UAE andKuwait. Majeed also composed two symphonies (No.1 inD minor and No.2 in E flat major) and has written severalarticles and books on music, his most important work areference book in nine volumes titled “A Dictionary ofModern Music”. Majeed’s crowning success was beingawarded a medal 2nd Rate of Ability in 2002 from HisMajesty, King Hamad of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Talal Salman is editor emeritus and publisher of the left-leaning pro-Arab daily, As-Safir (The Ambassador) inBeirut. He established the newspaper in 1974 with theaim to be “the newspaper of the Arab World in Lebanonand the newspaper of Lebanon in the Arab World” withthe slogan printed on the newspaper’s masthead “thevoice of the voiceless”. He started his career as ajournalist for Al Hawadeth Magazine in Lebanon in 1957.Talal is a member of the Lebanese Press Association inLebanon and is married with 4 children.

This emotional dance drama is a tragic love storywhich takes place in the years between the end of theQing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of Chinaand tells the story of Wild Jujube, the heroine who falls inlove with a young apprentice. The production’schoreographer and artistic director is Zhang Jigang,known as the “Star of the Century” in Chinese dancecircles, has won many prizes such as the Republic ofFrance President’s Award. The Dance Drama WildJujubes has wowed theatre goers and moved audienceswith its classical dance work in more than 300performances around the world including the CzechRepublic, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and Russia. The programme will be curated by“Mosaic”, a group of individuals that are dedicated topromote performing arts and film in the region. The Inspector General - Taiha

Although it was written nearly 173 years ago, theInspector General by the Russian playwright NikolaiGogol, is considered as one of theatre’s great plays. The play is a comedy of errors, portraying human greed,stupidity and the deep corruption of powers in TsaristRussia. The story centres around a group of corrupt localdignitaries who mistake a snobbish St. Petersburg youthfor a high ranking Inspector General. Gogol’s satire isdirected by the accomplished Algerian director, LoutfiBensebaa and performed by Afaq Group for DramaticArts. The group was established in 1991 and won anumber of awards for their performance of Taiha atnational and international festivals in Jordan and the UAE.

CCCThe Japanese Garden is used to enact the story of ajourney. First an actor tells the story, then a dancerperforms it and finally the audience is invited to exploreand animate the gardens themselves. The company hasperformed at numerous international children’s festivalsaround the world and is always enthusiastically received.

The rituals of the Whirling Dervishes are among themost enduring and exquisite ceremonies of spirituality. Theritual whirling, still practiced today by the dervishes of theMelevi order, is an act of love and a drama of faith. Sufimusic is closely connected with religious music and thelyrics are mainly taken from poems of Mevlana Celaleddin-iRumi. The Konya Turkish Sufi Music Ensemble was formedin 1990 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of theRepublic of Turkey and mainly performs during annualcommemor-ations of Mevlana but also perform Sufi musicand Sema rituals in Konya throughout the year. The fortymember Ensemble is headed by Omer Faruk Belviranli(vocal) and its art director is Yusuf Kayya (nay). TheEnsemble plays an important role for the promotion ofTurkish culture around the world.

Bernard Noël

While Bernard Noël went to Journalism School in the1950’s, his real interest lay in literature. The French poet,novelist and essayist is renowned for his boundary-breakingnovel, ‘Le Château de Cène’ (1969), intended as an accountof brutal experiences during the Algerian War. The explicitsexual excesses and violence depicted in the book resultedin its censorship as well as a lawsuit. He produced anoeuvre in the 1970’s which today includes over 60 titles,among them poems, novels, travelogues, literary criticism,political essays and a series of texts on art. In 1983 hefounded the literary centre, the Abbey of Royaumount and in1992 he was awarded the Prix National de Poésie. His mostrecent works are the collections of poems ‘Le Sillon desSens’ (2005) and ‘La Vie en Désordre’ (2005).
