WHAT IS PROJECT WORK?

WHY PROJECT WORK?

WHY PROJECT WORK?It integrates language knowledge, content and skills.

It encourages emotional and personal development.

It promotes responsibility and cooperation.

It encourages learner’s independence.

It caters for mixed-ability classes.

It educates the whole child ( intellectually and socially)

It allows for flexibility within the curriculum.

WHY PROJECT WORK?•It takes into account the learners’ needs and characteristics

•It provides close-to-real life and problem solving activities.

•It enables learners to communicate meaningfully through collaborative work.

•It allows them to take part in their learning process

•It gives a self-elaborated final product

PROS AND CONS ON PROJECT WORK

PLANNING THE PROJECT Analyze the needs of the learners

Choose a topic based on learner’s interests

Plan the objectives and the content

Choose the communicative tasks ( 5 skills)

Choose the final product (a PPT, a video, a wall

display, a booklet, podcast, blog etc.)

Plan the instruments and process for assessment and

evaluation

INTRODUCING THE PROJECT TO THE CHILDREN

Involve the children in the project by listening to

their suggestions

Tell them the choices they will have

Reach an agreement about the end-product

Tell them how their progress will be monitored

and assessed

MANAGING THE PROJECTThink of ways to monitor group work and

individual work

Give the children clear instructions and check

understanding

Have your materials ready

Expect some noise and movement

Plan time at the end of lessons to sum up

ORGANISING GROUP WORK

Should everyone do all the aspects of the project?

What choices should we give to the children?

Can the children take responsibility for finding information or materials?

How do we deal with grouping?

PROJECT PLANHaving a plan of work helps both teacher and

students to follow the steps of a project

It can be in the form of a wall poster, in a project

web, in the form of a calendar or in other forms

Individual or group responsibilities can be

reminded in the plan

As the project progresses objectives can be

evaluated and ticked off

PLANNING THE END-PRODUCTGive clear instructions about the final outcome.

Be clear on how the project is going to be displayed:

poster, exhibition, magazine, DVD, PPT, show, etc.

Do not be over-ambitious

Decide how to store on-going work

Be creative!

methodsOngoing evaluation help the children to become

more independentSometimes you may need to switch to first language

for evaluation tasks
