Page 1 of 8 Project title / Job position title: Ph.D. Fellowship in Wildfire Propagation Modelling Research Project / Research Group Description. The PhD project is focused on modeling wildfire propagation within a co-tutelle program co-advised by Gianni Pagnini, leader of the Statistical Physics line at BCAM, and María Isabel Asensio Sevilla, leader of the group of Numerical Simulation and Scientific Calculus SINUMCC of the University of Salamanca. Wildfire is a hazardous phenomenon that poses a high risk for life, properties and environment, and climate change yearly increases their number as well as the fire season duration and burned area. Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece are the most affected in Europe. Modeling has an important impact on policy makers and forest management to improve the efficiency of the efforts for fire suppression and control. Propagation of wildfires is affected by random phenomena as turbulent heat transfer and firebrand jumping that are responsible for dangerous events such as fire propagation across no fuel zones or the generation of independent and separated secondary fires. The group of Statistical Physics at BCAM developed a method to include as a post-processing procedure these random effects [1]. The SINUMCC group has a long experience in environmental numerical modeling and developed a simplified physical wildfire spread model (PhFFS) [2] that is coupled with a sub-model for atmospheric velocity field (HDWM). The coupled model runs into a GIS for simulations all over Spain. First the method developed at BCAM for random fluctuations will be implemented into PhFFS. Later, a sensitivity analysis will be performed in view of a coupling with a data assimilation procedure. The final goal is the creation of a software to simulate real situations for practical purposes. [1] Kaur et al., Turbulence and fire-spotting effects into wild-land fire simulators. Commun.
